  7. Salisbury make a front axle for a defender?????????? Are you quite sure about that??
  8. the electrics are especially crap when they get caught in the tipper gear hinges:blushing:
  9. Nene are about as expensive as you can get, and yes, they are the only things that will last and last and last and come back for more.......hence the amount of series landrovers still in work out there. Been burnt too many times on cheap landies/ "bargains" mozza, finally learnt:001_rolleyes:

  15. Best advice yet. I cant wait to get shot of mine....when i retire.
  16. Such as.......? They use defenders in the china clay pits in StAustell, possibly one of the harshest environments possible for a vehicle. Daimler-benz own all the vehicles, as a leasing company, and the garage I use have the servicing contract. About 3 years back daimler benz got fed up with the servicing costs and the fact that vehicles were just getting killed, eg a £20k 110 was fetching about £300 in auction aged 3 years in the worst case. So they bought a fleet of rangers and some hiluxes. After 6 months they got rid of that lot, as 80% were either completely knackered or beyond ecenomical repair. The only ones that survived were the managers ones which never went in the pits. They wewnt back to defender. To me that says it all.
  17. Hey treebloke, you know my brother Jim- giant of a bloke, has a toyota lardcruiser. He has just joined Arbtalk as Pugwash.
  18. Not the aus military who still use landrover, as toyota dont stand up to the abuse. The reason toyota are so successful is the trade arrangemebnts they have in the southern hemisphere.
  19. ms171 size saw, 50 stone bloke....no wonder he was one handing it and the stick was wobbling........
  20. At 70ft could you not crown raise and thin, and do as minimal a reduction as possible?
  21. Good advice Tom. Its exactly what i did and mine is toasty as hell now. I have the viscous coupled fan on my 300tdi, so when idling the engine won't really heat up like on jap stuff/ cars etc, and in the winter i put a board in front of the rad too, making sure the intercooler isnt covered. Removing the viscous fan and replacing with electric will get over this problem and also give a few more horsepower.
  22. The unreliability of landrovers compared to other stuff is one of the biggest myths around, purported by thise whio have bought knackered ones cheap, or havent looked after them properly. The thing is that landrovers are so much more capable than any other 4x4, so they get far more abuse, so appear to be unreliable. Now a load of people will now come on here and say I am talking crap, but I have had several landrovers, and also jap stuff, and I would NEVER go back to the flimsy japanese/ ford stuff again, because it is less reliable than my current landrover, and HIDEOUSLY expensive to repair. In my experience, people who denegrate landrovers are often thiose who couldnt afford a decent one too, or have had one bad experience. Most of the jap crap is okay because it has never really done anything tough enough to break, or even dirty it. Get the most expensive defender you can buy, there is no such thing as a cheap one, unless you buy an already knackered one.
  23. Ah- thanks rob!
