  2. Me too as I'm about to order one from Rob!!!!!!!!
  3. That's one hell of a machine for £1500.00
  4. They encoraged me to go on my own. We now refer each other work and use each other on a subby basis. I can now dictate how much a day i am prepared to pay them

  5. Adam, first and foremost, you will not beat the local hire companies with hiring out your machine, plus... who pays for the wear and tear, sharpening , misuse of your hired machine? I use a guy near me for all my stump grinding work. I pay him nothing, he turns up, quotes for the job and 99% of the time gets the work. That's because I know what he charges. When he has done ten jobs in his little book I get a freeby stump grind. This is what you need to do. Speak to all the tree surgeons in your area and talk to them what you can realistically offer. You may have to pay some a commission for referring you. Also let them know what you expect then they can fit these costs into their quote. When you are starting out in an area, it's a good idea to get people working with you not against you.
  6. Nasher, I did exactly the same thing 5 years ago what you are contemplating. Still work full time and carry out treework in my spare time and at weekends. Am now getting to the stage of dropping the full-time work to a part time job and increasing time for treework. Have spent 5 years training, getting qualified/experienced with some great surgeons who have supported me and invested wisely in the right gear. Good luck, it's hard work and it's great!!
  7. You always need a back up saw imo. well, that's what I tell my wife.!
  8. My advice is, If it doesn't feel right, walk away to cut another day:biggrin:
  9. Am looking forward to getting mine soon.
  10. Was away with the family. Got back early Monday and went down. Missed all the carving, though met Tim Burgess. Great chap. Saw some excellent carvings. Has given me some great ideas for future carving projects. Will be speaking to Rob soon about an alaskan mill.
  11. 5 years, still learning. Enjoy every day. Wish I'd started when I was 18. Hit the big 50 next year and have no intention of giving up.
  12. If you had a loan you would only get tax deductable on the interest payment, lease is 100% deductable therefore sounds more but more tax allowance. Do you understand? come back to me if you don't and I'll try to help. It's all about trying to make the most of what you spend against what you earn.
  13. Secateurs and silky get the best results, just completed a nice reduction on a cherry which had been butchered by a rogue 3 months earlier. Loo:001_smile:ks nice
  14. Ha ha. I do have a token stihl. MS200T and 018 carver
  15. Didn't know cider went down well with lobster LOL
  16. A Vehicle, trailer, chipper, saw, somewhere to dump, insurance, first aid kit, a bit of common sense, and most importantly of all, be able to deal with your customers and smile:thumbup1:. TBH you will be better off working with another surgeon, get experience in all aspects, especially in dealing with customers, then do your own jobs.
  17. Have to say, this thread is very informative. Great when members share their hard work and we are able to make comment/point of view with no fear of arguement ensuing. Well done guys:001_smile:
  18. A photo may assist!
  19. Husky all the way am afraid.
  20. No, it works just like a loan. You pay monthly amount and at the end of the term it's yours. Advantage is it's tax deductable, and the vat if you are registered.
