  1. Yeah i agree Dave but the problem would then be if they do feel the trees onto one another and leave the trees as they are for us to deal with would possibly result in us losing money . i did explain that it would not expect there to be any saving as we had planned to strip the trees out and chip as we go and then fell the sticks and remove with a forwarder , there reply was - if we fell them then you wont have to climb them and that will save money ! hence the hourly rate , if it gets to expensive then they have the option of stopping us if they wish
  2. surely an all but brand new chain is fine to join ? i have seen plenty of factory joined chains that have been poorly joined . i would be interested to see just how much vibration this could cause .
  3. if you speak to any of the older garden machinery firms they should be able to do this for you - £5 for a repair (if there is plenty of life left in the chain) or 15-25 for a new chain ?
  4. your exactly right Dave , having offered the client a fixed price to carry out the works the decided that they could "save money " by felling the trees there self , i explained that i could not give a fixed price as i don't know how they will work or if they can fell them and leave them in a workable state , i had tried to save the money and pointed out that my fixed price was the most cost effective way of doing the job but they felt that they could save money by felling the trees . i may be wrong and they may trim everything out so that we can get through it in less time but when the method they came up with was to pull them all over with the tractor and try to keep them all in on pile i can see we will be there a minute or two.
  5. yeah i could not agree more hence the hourly rate i would prefer to watch them chip the lot with a 6 inch chipper rather than do if for them but hey ho as the saying goes "penny wise pound foolish":sneaky2:
  6. in all honesty it depends on the job and on the client , i will happily charge by the job/day/hour/volume/or if needed long term fixed price structure . all depends on what the job is and what the most cost effective outcome can be for the customer . for instance i quoted to take down a stand of roadside trees today which included chipping the brushwood and delivering to their compound and then felling the timber and delivering to the compound i gave a price for the job as a whole and the client decided that they would fell the trees into the car park and all i had to do was chip the brushwood and deliver to their compound , i then gave them an hourly cost for chipping as the duration of the job and the amount of trimming out etc would depend on how they felled the trees etc .
  7. or end up not selling and being left with it after turning potential buyers away , my point was that in this day in age no one really want to pay loads out on haulage - sell it local for a decant price and limmit the haulage costs at the same time = the possibilities of selling more timber and making a better profit !! That being said , if he dont wanna sell it then thats his choice
  8. if your willing to sell in cornwall can you pm me some prices please !!
  9. timber aint really a niche is it ? you dont want it and someone in cornwall might do thats not a niche that in my eyes is turning down money for something you dont want
  10. and neither will the customer if they have to pay more for the job taking a little longer
  11. well that does work two ways ! why advertise hardwood for sale and then limit who can buy it ? thats taking the proverbial if im honest . would it seem unfair if i/we were to aim the sales of timber solely to the tavistockplymouth/buckfastleigh area just to even up the odds a bit ?
  12. We have been contacted several times this week by firms in and arround north cornwall/south devon looking to buy timber , so for now we wont be doing any logs our selves !!!!!
  13. f you get on well with your local garden machinery shop then i would pop in and see if they can pop a new rivet/tie strap on for you .
  14. haha they are that cheap they cant afford to call you back !!!!!!!
  15. so is this timber not for sale to anyone south of Buckfastleigh beacaue ?????
  16. i would say it depends on the manufacturers recommendations , what make helmet is it ? . You need to take into account its age + its amount of use and how much sunlight it has been subjected too and how its stored etc , we use the hi viz kask helmets and they are replaced every year due to the fact that we use them 6 days a week throughout the year .
  17. why not speak to Redwood and put your question to them ? you know what you can do with the 530T so why not demo a 540t and see how u go ?? if your looking to buy a new chipper then they will be looking at a sale either way
  18. No you shouldnt , but if then again if the HSE said that it was safe to use tesco carrier bags as a parachute and leap out of a plane at 10,000 feet would you do it ? . Im glad to hear that work is picking up BUT is it short lived because people now feel that seeing as the recession is over we can go back to how spending was before ? I truly hope the improvement you have seen is set to carry on
  19. The sad truth it the the independents are no way near as regulated as the high street banks , as for the ppi scandal this was something that was created buy the banks lending side the FA's mainly dealt with investment , for what its worth Lloyds have kept on the financial consultants (the people that deal with protection) as they were the side that actually turns a profit ! . Having a partner that works within this area it really does open my eyes to the way banks react to the economy especially when you look at the figures
  20. well we will see what we see wont we - this "news" is only a day old and i would be supprised if we dont hear anything over the coming day , lets be honest though Lloyds gorup laying off all of its Financial advisers ?? does that not speak for its self ?
  21. purely to convince the general public to spend like mad on christmas !! once christmas is over there will be mention that the economy has taken a nosedive due to a lack of high street spending over the lead up to and during the christmas period , it was pretty much the same leading up to the Olympics , if the economy had improved and we were out of the recession i would have expected to have heard reports of banks starting to lend again but so far the banks only seem to be reducing their lending !
  22. Personally i feel that the news we are out of the recession is merely propaganda , there is more to this recession than the government or media are letting on - for instance lloyds baning group have just made all of their Financial advisers that work for Halifax redundant , well either take a lesser job or take voluntary redundancy - this was only 2 weeks ago !! no news of it and nothing in the papers !! i may be being a little skeptical but i think we will hear of some sort of financial problem or governmental spending scam before christmas and come january the recession will be back on . i really hope that i am wrong but i cant see it !!
  23. if it helps i can bring my lock jack with me when i come up ?
  24. I run a u1600 and it i perfect for what it does - chipping and hauling timber on a trailer , its also really good off road and has a far lower ground disturbance than a 4x4 towing a chipper But thats where it stops , if i wanted a loader or to carry a bigger chipper etc i would have to go for a tractor . A unimog is an expesive piece of kit to maintain and if your not doing lots of work that needs a mog then i would opt for a tractor , and you will not get much mog for 12k .
