  1. i tend to use what ever i feel is required for the job , it may be a porter wrap and light weight swing cheek pully , may be a lowering bollard fixed to the tree with various pulleys etc or it could be a crane ranging from 50 ton - 180 ton it really all depends on the the tree and what you have to contend with . but i do like enjoy climbing and knowing a have a whole host of options open to me with the kit i have got .
  2. if the scooby was not in vospers i would take her out for some sliding and four wheeled doughnuts lol
  3. sounds good to me tommer , will probably be nearer to towards the end of the week or sat .
  4. im looking to get a 395xp
  5. me and my big mouth - its now snowing in helston FFS
  6. what husky did you get then
  7. its been cold and never saw anything snow wise untill it was home time , the news was saying we have got it to come tomorrow but cant see it my self - ha ha cormac have run out of salt grit ha ha ha
  8. what percentage did husky go up by then ??
  9. ha ha but only a light sprinkle in some areas of cornwall ha ha
  10. personally i think that stihl are putting prices up because they can - simple as that , there is no reason behind it what so ever it simply because they have the majority share of the market and feel they can charge what they like , if you take into account the rate of inflation and poste anual proffits stihl have made then you will see my point . Secondly the reason that cut off saws have not gone up is simply because of several large hire companys that will only buy cut off saws from stihl - take brandon hire for instance our local hire center , they have over 30 cut off saws out on hire and before christmas they had a stack of cut off saws in the shop - probably 25 of them and they all sold within a month .
  11. But at 40+ you will soon realise that your climbing days are over , Jack Kenyon is coming up to retirement age and can still run rings round any of the guys on the course and in fact most of the lecturers - Zack does not like to climb in case he gets dirty or messes up the hair do
  12. we recently have had something similar on a turkey oak - tree had been inspected and no FFB were found but there had been a cavity that was not filled up witth concreat so back in the storms i recieved a phone call saying that siad oak tree had failed at the base of the crown (exactly where the concreat was , so we went along and cleared the tree from the road and 3 gardens . When we had a look at the remaining stem of the tree it became clear that it was either Rigidoporus or similarbut was hard to identify because the FFb had not been exposed to enough light therefore the FFB was colourless and did not really show any common charictaristics .
  13. I think that the price of a man is dependant on how he preforms - i am tired of getting guys down on trilas that can talk a decent job but in reality cant carry it out but still feel that they are worth top money , i think from now on i will set a base reat and re assess the figure at the end of a weeks work - newbies would start on 65 per day as i would suply everything and a decent bloke with his own ppe and certs would start on 75-80 per day , the problem would come when th newby needs showing how to do things - the decent skilled guy aint being paid to teach .
  14. enjoy the course at merrist wood , i really did . i think the structure of the course is verry different to when i was there and the need for experience is no longer required , the handouts and info that jack kenyon will give you is over and above whats needed , i ended up with a big folder full of handouts that we did not need for the course but that were intersting to some of us .
  15. at last someone who is on the same lines as me , when a was interviewed for the place on the course it was made clear to me that i had to have experience within the industry of which i had to prove that i did ! once on the course it became clear that there was only 3 of us that did have any experience and to be honest i felt cheated that somewhere along the lines the goal post had been moved allowing newbies onto the course thus reducing what was being tought .
  16. HA ha ha ha - no funny i know but that happened to a hire truck i had in on a job lol i really hope you did not dammage the cat and the rest of the exaust system - i was quoted (parts only ) £987.35 but that was on a 55 plate . i think the only down fall of the iveco is ground clearence , i had a transit after that and did not have a problem with ground clerence , just every thing elts lol
  17. very true , i personally wear stretch air trousers , haix boots , climb on 13 mm rope and only use one shiny bit of kit called a lock jack lol
  18. i have also been tempted to get my own advertising trailer and move that round from place to place , but i still think a clean well maintained truck and equipment goes much much further along with a company uniform
  19. personally i think thats the way forward , i was advertising in the thompson local but to be honest i found it a total waste of time and got sick of the "are you ready for so much more work" type phrase's that you get from the salesman etc , local papres work quite well for both log sales and advertising your services but a well sign written vehicle goes a long long way . when we had the housing boom i was really tempted to have signs made like the for sale signs you see outside houses and put them up where ever i had been workin (with the customers permision) but never did it !!
  20. to be honest you will be learning from a man called Jack Kenyon - he is probably one of the most highly respected Arborists in the country and probably Europe , he tought me back in 2003 and to be honest what he did not know was not really worth knowing about , as for the practical side of things i have heard that lots has changed so cant really help . Probably the best advice i could give you is to get some chainsaw trousers that are comfortable for you , a decent hat and some chainsaw gloves and maybe some pairs of normall work gloves for chainsaw maintainance , a first aid kit and whistle . oh and a decent pruning saw , I would highly reccomend F.R jones and Son as the place to get all of your kit . any way good luck and hope all goes well . Keep us posted !!!
  21. thanks steve i will give them a shout
  22. great stuff , sounds like you had a good start back at wortk then:thumbup:
  23. a blow lamp should help starting during cold weather
  24. hiya guys im currently looking at insurance that will cover tree surgery equipment that is stored on a vehicle over night - clearly the kit is all locked away , im only asking as im thinking of setting up a dedicated vehicle thats always fully loaded for call out works but obviously before i do this i need to look into insurance . can any of you guys shed any light ???
  25. verry good , one of the guys that used to work for me thought it would be a good idea to put 6 poles togeter with the hook head on and try to retrieve an ms 200 from a climber in the tree to fill up - this resulted in him being launched over a garden fence narrowly missin a sudden drop into a primary school playground . looking back at it i think it would have been the best thing that could have happened to him , well other than breaking his scrawney little neck lol
