  1. asked againn about why we put the sling there, i knew that was the only place we could get it under, he said that theres no real point moving it back up the log, just makes more work for yourslef, it would winch out fine there. But also... he said that over the years hes found when your working in tight areas winching out long lengths and you have the cable a bit futher down, you can make the butt of the tree come past the back of the tractor, giving you more room, if you get what i mean? its hard to explain
  2. A mate of mine got me this job last week, for the company he works for. Job was to quarter these two oak butts so they would fit on their bandsaw, was good fun Saw was pulling to the one side, so the on the first log cuts didnt quite match up, only an inch or two off, nothing the loader couldnt break in half aha, after a quick sharpen, i got the bigger log much more accuate. These are the biggest logs i've cut like this, and doing it myself with no help from granddad was sweet, had such a good day. To put into persepctive how big that log is, i am about 6ft tall, maybe just under.
  3. if it was closer i would come, break out all my big saws
  4. whats with the filter cover on the 260? never seen that bit on one before
  5. ah right i seee! Yeah man they are brill bits of kit, but so are alaskan mills (i have a 36" one, thinking of getting some bigger rails though) Yeah they do both have advantages and disadvantages, so its best to have both I would highly recommend a Lumbermate, they are well worth the money, and ours was second hand in great nick which is even better I saw the newest version of the lumbermate at the apf and that looked much better, i think i've got a pic somewhere, i'll have a looook
  6. big j, you've got the same mill as me and my granddad, we really pleased with ours and the last payment will be going out of my bank next month when new ours was a bog standard unit with no trailer adaption, so the previous owner, got an axel and tow bar custom built, its great because the wheels can be removed so that you can set it up flat on the ground, he also go two extentions made for either end, so we can cut a 20ft log if needs be (sorry for the slight de rail) som really nice bits of wood you have there love that bridge support beam!
  7. man that really does suck!!! i got all my tickets for free as i did an ND Forestry & Arb, straight after i left school

  11. ahaa, i find stihl bars last longer, hand a fairrr few chains on my 361 since new 2 years ago with the same bar i've never greased oregon bars anyway aha hes not asking that answer yes, if chain is the same pitch, guage, ect. as fit for the bar and saw
  12. yeah man as long as its the same pitch, gauge ect. it'll fit
  13. yeah i saw them, took the leaflets by them, havent had time to have a read yet, i came home with a massive back of stuff to read aha, to be honest though you cant beat a big old wire winch cable imo

  23. Anyone know the best place to buy or get hold of some steel mesh, see as i have now started my agricultural engineering course, i will be learning to weld Very very very soon, i want to start to forestry guard my Leyland 270, i want to get hold of some mesh and knock up some removeable window guards for a start. So where could i get some of the mesh from? Also what would be the best sort and size? inch by inch squares in the mesh, bigger? smaller? Thanks in advance
  24. Yep thats right im back to college for another year, or maybe two havent decided if i want to stay on for both yet. Having already done a National Diploma in Forestry & Arboriculture (which as a bonus gave me First Aid at Work, CS30, CS31, CS38, CS39, PA1 and PA6, all for free which was sweet ) I am now doing an Agricultural Engineering course, its the same level as the ND but its called somthing else as its now run by a differnt examing group or somthing. What is even better is that, as i explained to my tutor on the interview, i do not intend to do anything with agriculture i life (but i could if needs be haha) so he is going to try to get me working on some of the forestry kit (the very small amount of forestry kit that is) that the college has when possible, which is sooo good of him! But it seems pretty sweet, had my week there this week, only doing 2 and half days a week, so i still get chance to work which is good. So all is going well, now i can learn to keep all our old kitting running for years to come
