  1. Chippers in Tomintoul??? hmmm I'll have a look next time i'm through.... Tomintoul is like a twilight zone... cant imagine much happening over there, unless the crown estate were installking a new flower power birdy lover walking route or something. Cheers Buzz - will have a look! I got some prices in for chipper hire today, had several ranging from £600 a week through to £350 a week... seems there's a big difference in pricing.
  2. Have a similar job coming up... The dead/dying trees that were classed as high priority were the ones that would hit the path, drop limbs or deadwood on the path or were in striking distance of the path. Outside of this the trees are going to be considered lower priority. I recommended felling anything dead and deadwooding the larger trees that are already dropping deadwood on the path below. I'm not sure how the whole duty of care thing goes, but IMO if there is a possibility a tree is going to either fail or drop a limb and the public is around, the public is most likley to be walking on the path, so it would be a higher priority.
  3. Try contacting A & B Services in Killin - http://www.abs-scotland.co.uk/, They do a lot with skylines set up on excavators and will know of any in your area - they are a great company.
  4. Good looking job!! Must have been enjoyable.
  5. Two peanuts walking down the road... One was a salted!
  6. I would have thought most hospitals would have some kind of low slung trolley you could load the grinder onto and then transport it through the hospital on the trolley? I know one of thebig hospitals down near my mothers have quite large machinery going about the corridors, like small electric train type things..
  7. Cairngorm Stoves, Grantown-on-Spey 01479 873493 Morso and Perge Main Agents - the guy in there will tell you anything you like about wood, seems quite a knowledgeable chap.
  8. They love the Aspen up here... infact they're spending thousands all over the shop to re-introduce it wherever they can!
  9. Then I come in and de-veg the whole bloody lot of you, cut all the rest of you down for firewood and commercial gain!
  10. Monkeyed - Yep, understand totally what you're on about... I imagine taking two largeish limbs off like that on this oak will cause some kind of health problems for her in the years to come, it wouldnt supprise me if the pruning cuts let some sort of disease into the tree and result in a failure later in life - I hope not but i'm sure it's likely. On the tree in the picture, I was originally going to prune the limbs back to thier apex in line with the boundary fence - but I thought it would look silly and although we are not required to leave any trees in a sensible state as long as they are cleared to the boundary, I like to take a bit of pride in my work wherever I can and so decided to take the limbs right back and leave a neat job - especially as it was a third party tree and not owned by network rail. Not sure if that's the right thing to do or not, but if you've got enough time to do a decent job you might as well.
  11. SWB - clear your private messages mate, cant send you anything at the mo
  12. HI All, Does anybody know anyone in Scotland doing chipper hire?? I possibly have the requirement to hire two x tracked chippers, would require something like 7 to 9 inch, for approximatley a month. Does anybody have any idea how much a new tracked chipper would cost? What would be a good price? Any ideas/contacts greatfully appreciated, Cheers, Matt
  13. The Chemical Brothers - The State We're In from the album 'Come With Us' great chilled out tune! [ame] [/ame] Also featured in a couple of Graeme McMahon's videos.
  14. Mr Ed - the site won't let me reply to your PM as it says you have exceeded the 100 limit. You'll have to delete some old ones for me to reply.

It;s not who you think it is BTW

  15. Just thought i'd put these up to show that we don't always use spikes on live trees !!! I was asked to remove the two lover limbs as they were overhanging the line Me working my way up, about to tie in another anchor point... And again.. The end result, limbs removed. Not a spike in sight, the tree looks a little unbalanced, but unfortunatley we're only alowed to carry out the work we're told to do.
  16. Have heard that there have been two quite nasty chainsaw accidents on the past week, and part of the cause of them has been attributed to the snow.. One guy fell over in the snow and on top of his running saw.. Just a reminder how careful we have to be guys!
  17. I occasionally hire in a man + chipper for the day, costs me £120.00 for the day, and the boy will chip whatever is required, all chippings left on site. This is with a trailed chipper and not a tracked chipper though, so for having a tracked machine I would expect to be paying at least £25 more per day so I would say £150 per day.
  18. Personally I'd rather do it the now - less hassle with foliage. If it's to let light into a garden, it's probably a light crown reduction of some sort or you may be asked to top them out... best to suss the job first and get some pictures, pop them up on here and there'll be plenty of people to offer you advice.
  19. Now i'm no arboponse, but out of 100 trees like that I would expect to see very little failure, possibly up to 5% as the oaks are good and strong...however it would have to be put under a 12 month monitoring schedule. But the tree in that picture, surely you would have to recommend remedial work and reduction? It almost looks dangerous IMO.
  20. Buzz - had exactly the same thing on my old discovery... With mine it was the prop shaft, it went on vibrating for ages just as you describe and then bang she went! Good new is, if it's the rear prop you will still be able to drive the vehicle if it goes, even if it's only to the garage. Another one I had on the disco that caused vibration was the steering damper, caught a rock one day on the hill and that upset it.
  21. Billy, you should as a rule be looking at a minimum of £70 a day as a CS30/31 operator. Even a labourer with no tickets that is self employed should be on more than £50. However, I would say age, experience and skill also have to be taken into account. If you are self employed you will be paying your own national insurance and income tax, £50 a day simply isn't enough. Especially considering the cost of saws, kit, PPE, training and so on. How are you set for insurance? I hope you're not having to pay that as well.
  22. The boys that do that are on $350 a day! Using such a big saw up the tree like that must be a nightmare.. just the weight of the thing hanging off your harness for starters.
  23. Thought it sounded strange - but the chap was trying to sell me a new 357xp (think thats the right one) Problem for him is I dont use huskys as a rule, prefer the Stihl.
