  1. I'll give this hitch a go.... does it have to have long tails or could it be used shorter? I've been pondering other types of hitches alot recently - I've only ever used a traditional prussik set-up...
  2. Yeah, the boys can winch me into position..... liking the idea of that! lol
  3. I use a TreeMotion, and I love it.... but the side D's on the hips are bloody uncomfortable... the lower D's in line with the rope bridge are spot on though. Will only be using the hipster attachments for positioning from now on..
  4. The lassie in the pic with her hands in her pockets is the owner of the property the tree fell into... she was offering us a cuppa and a biccy, but I declined due to the fact I was up the tree and only coming down with it!!
  5. OK... Questions... The tree was inside the boundary of a wood which is managed by a large management company, and the call out was from them. The ''branch'' fell onto private land, and so the land owner will be footing the bill. Good job I had all my climbing kit with me and all the saws, could easily have gone out with just one saw to tidy a branch... the contract manager actually said last night on the phone it would probably be just a 5 min job and would be done just to keep the owner happy.... lol. Peter - It's nice to get some good stuff now and again.... you should see the s**t I have to do normally! Phenom - I like having jobs that take a bit of thought and planning.. makes things more interesting. Shreks Wee Brother - Cheers... I thought so too. Tried something a bit different today, used my lower D rings on the harness, must say... much more comfortable than the side D's on the hips.
  6. Had a call last night to go out today to a 'branch' hung up on a fence and was told it would most likley take 5 mins to snip off, sned up and chuck over the fence into the woods... easy peasy. Little did I expect to find half the tree snapped out and the remainder in a dangerous state with another tree blown over and resting on to it! Anyway here's the pics, they're not very good but I didn't get much time to take photos.
  7. Always use a soft link!! It may save you're life one day.... why wouldn't you use one?!? I use a very short prussik on my wirecore flip line, works really well but hate not being able to adjust it one handed.
  8. Mesterh - glad to see you're wearing your high vis!
  9. What needs to be time consuming about it?? for rescue purposes, if you are on a pole, you can just move the false crotch down at the same time as moving your strop down... all the while having a safe emergency exit!
  10. You can also have a false crotch set up with just a tail and karab at the live end, and the dead end tethered to a long prussik set up on the ground, enabling somebody on the ground (trained or otherwise) to carry out your rescue for you by operating the prussik on the ground to lower you down the pole. All the climber needs to do is click in the karab on his harness and disconnect/cut his main line or strop. We were shown this method on my course, as well as carrying out a pole rescue and I must say it looks like a very safe and quick way of getting someone down from a tree safely. The method described above can also be used for lowering limbs/logs etc, but you obviousley would not be using any climbing prussiks or climbing rope for any lowering work.
  11. talking of cones, I somehow ended up with about 10 cones last year... no idea where they came from?!? The worm hole must extend up to Carrbridge too!
  12. ahhh conifer hell!! I get a really bad rash from conifers like thuya and leylandii, so absolutley hate them, but good work if you can get it! Looks good dean!
  13. I contract to a very large company, and I have found that some managers havent a clue about reality, people get treated badly, and there is no system in place for personable business. Everything is beaurotic and wrapped up in red tape and H & S. My opinion is ever changing, but from my point of view, at this very moment I am often treated like a puppet on a string. The way things are at the moment, contracts coming in from other sources and other companies would be a blessing.
  14. £2.60 a pint in our local...
  15. Yep, you are right... I've not seen it in Arb, but come across it and have done it myself in Forestry.. Generally take a caravan on site for work we do over on the wes coast felling road lines.. There's a couple of squads over there, and the other boys travel up from Yorkshire somewhere to do a 3 week shift, then they have 4 days off and back up for three weeks again... seems to work well and everyone is on-time for work every day as the caravans are parked right next to the job
  16. As a professional Pikey, you could probably get quite allot of work all over.. Nicking quad bikes, breaking into sheds, stealing saws, flogging car batteries, dodgy tree work, tarmac the odd driveway, bit of poaching on the side.... yeah.... great job.. ...
  17. Good looking job Andy! Must have been fun.. At least you had the crane there to get back up the tree after lunch! What did you do with the logs?? Firewood?
  18. Personally, I take my flip line and cross it over to reduce the loop, gives you more feedom of movement too. Normally also have my main line tied in under the flip line.
  19. Carrbridge not Cambridge As in the carve Carrbridge chainsaw carving competition..
  20. It's a BSA .270 - my weapon of choice! I do have a .243 but never us it... always the .270 It's good on the foxes too... good thump off it. It's ok on rabbits, but only as long as you enjoy it vaporised!
  21. Stalking is my sport of choice, but always used to love getting out with the ferrets and just the shotgun.. havent done that for years.
  22. Word of Mouth and relationship building with larger companies for me.. Reputation comes into it's own as far as I see it... I get phone calls from larger companies when they have a problem that they know I will make sure is sorted out for them immediatley and to standard.. I dont generally advertise anywhere... Haven't had much luck with the yellow pages, or internet advertising, and a good friend of mine is in the local phone book, has been for a year and not one phone call... My website gets a few enquiries though. The local guys advertise in the local paper, but from what I hear they all end up going to quote the same jobs, so mr cheap wins.
  23. I use this technique alot.. I find as mentioned above, if it takes more than a couple of goes to get the next branch you want then it ruins your climb and puts a damper on things.. I end up getting stressed, thinking i'm taking too long, and feeling stupid when people are watching.. I generally use a throwbag on my long strop now, and just go for the next branch you know you can get easily...which might only be the one above your head, but it gets you up there with no hassle. Failing that, i'll spend time on the ground getting y throwline as high as possible to start with.. it's a case of reading the tree and planning your ascent before you start.
