  1. Fair play, you got me... gotta have a smoke!!
  2. Ahhhhh..... so it's not just me that does a quick tree ident before looking/quoting a job then. Nice one.
  3. Aye, another day at the office.. Cant speak for anyone else but i've had my piece break up a tree plenty of times..
  4. Rod, Regarding cleaning of karabiners, pulleys etc... had to do all mine recently as they were caked in sap and all kinds of gunk after several weeks of dirty crappy work and rubbish weather. Vinegar seems to clean the karabiners off nicely!
  5. Does anybody know where I can buy some spot guns?? I think they are a 5l capacity sprayer that deliver a measured dose.. Looking to upgrade the pesticides kit and am trying to replace the knapsacks for weevil spraying. Also looking for a decent source of pesticides suits, they dont last 5 minutes and cost a bomb!
  6. I've often thought it would be good if someone came up with a set of spikes that clamp on to the front of your boots... Can get uncomfortable on the feet when you spend a long time with weight on your irons. Had thought of and tried using crapons once, but they werent quite right for the job.
  7. I was pretty sure it was 15Kn??!! Now i'm not sure at all!
  8. My initial thoughts were that the teees in the open grassland will be more bushy and stunted owing to the fact that they have not had to compete for light whilst growing and if they are in grassland then you can bet that they will have suffered for some sort of grazing as they grow which may account for such stunted growth and a lack of decent limbs.. The trees in the woodland setting will have grown faster as they will have been competing for light from an early age and will have become more leggy, once over grazing height they will have developed well and big... Might be wrong but that's what it reminds me of anyway, have sene similar in scots pine..
  9. That's an interesting one.. I was on a call out on the railway on Saturday and found some deadwood that had falled from a really old birch.... it had lichen growing on it that would literattly make cabbage look small.... wish I had got a picture..
  10. It's Graeme McMahon, Sherbrooke Tree Service - put it into youtube and it will bring up all his videos
  11. I thought I could get there and condemn it like the guys on rogue traders...
  12. Like this? I still dont get the flat top thing?
  13. I see what you mean...hmm, will try that, should be climbing on saturday I hope. Never thought of the belt causing slippage but it stands to reason right enough, generally climb wearing a big jacket too, always seems to lash with rain and high winds when I put the harness on!
  14. Whats with the whole flat top thing?? What's the benefit of it? Is this what you mean???
  15. Normally always wear a belt???
  16. I'm with you on that one, the tree is pretty overbearing in the garden by the sounds.... The picture below is something close to my initial thoughts.. but I may well advise her to cut it right back so that she can keep it manageable.
  17. You think I should cut it off that low??
  18. I had my big saw up the tree with me the other day.. dont have a hitch climber or anything like that but I had the problem of the saw pulling my harness down over my hips which was pretty uncomfortable. I found a great way of keeping the saw with me and taking no weight... I attached another prussik to my live end, just above the prussik I was already using and then attached the tool strop to the prussik with a karab... worked really well, just slid the prussik down with me and the saw was ready and in place. Don't suppose this method would work too well when ringing down as you're normally choked right up to the tree, but worked well for taking a big limb off!
  19. I've been asked to go and look at a cherry which requires reduction.. and quote for the required work. it's in a relativley small garden and has decking close by!! All green waste is to be removed from site. How much of a reduction would you recommend? The lady wants it cut back quite a bit... thats all the info I have at the moment. I was thinking of a 40% reduction as it will grow back quite vigourosley and she would get good value for money, what do you guys think? What sort of price would you put on the job? I'll let you know what i'm going to quote after you've all quoted for me!!
  20. Probably has if he dosent own a 660!!
  21. Any ideas on the pros and cons of Leasing a vehicle?? I've had so many problems with my L200 I think it;s time to replace it, but cant decide what to replace it with and cant decide wether to buy a vehicle or wether to lease a new one or even hire purchase a vehicle?? There are allot of tax benefits to lease hire and hire purchace but can anybody share their experiences? I was talking to a friend of mine today that mentioned there are alot of clauses with contract hire and leasing whcih can be costly at the end of the agreement...
