  1. I'll give you that one.... two o the trees were 'bendy' like that, and right over an old stone dyke to boot but we did not lower anything from them Thelarger tree had limbs over a house, and we lowered a total of three limbs on that side just incase we hit the guys tv aerial, but the rest was freefall.
  2. Rigging and lowering is cool, especially when there is a real need for it and it works well, but how can that be quicker than a cut and chuck?? Dont get me wrong, I love rigging, and I love having to think about how to move a cut limb around, out and down from the tree but when it;s not necessary, it's nice just to cut and let it drop.
  3. Thanks for all the good wishes guys..... we can't decide on a name just yet, we're thinking Lexie for a girl.... and still not sure for a boy... any suggestions welcome. Apparently, according to her, Stihl is not a good name for a boy!!
  4. Please give a warm welcome to your newest and maybe youngest Arbtalk member... infact he/she is so young we're not sure how young he/she is but please take this as a formal announcement
  5. I dont know if my budget will stretch as far as the FC.... have you got the software?? You can give me a run through next time i'm over!!!! I take it you;re my nearest rep??
  6. You never know.... one of the main stems is absolutley shot to bits.... completley hollow inside. Had to transfer into it at the top from the good stem and thin my way down it. I wasnt feeling exactly comfortable with it but it did help me push my comfort zone a wee bit.. like I said before, I dont get many jobs involving crown maintenance so I really enjoy it when they do come along..
  7. I don't beliebe in all honesty that theres even a need for class two, let alone class three. Whats the brand name on the first pair Justin?? The look a pretty good boot. I am currently using meindl chainsaw boots as I adore their hill boots, and I must say they would take some beating.... but will be due a new pair shortly. Also need a new set of trousers... the stihl saw trousers are literally pants! Mine are buggered and only two years old!!
  8. I'm burning some of the alder deadwood right now in the log burner..... burns an absolute treat!
  9. Thanks for the suggestions guys.... the anquet package looks good! Ideally I would like to put all of our jobs onto OS maps and print them off for records..
  10. Thanks for all the comments guys.... keep em coming. Just a few thoughts.... I never said I was helping the tree.... I was asked to do the job and I agred and so really I was helping te bank balance more than anything. Regarding un-necessary growth... I would say any large ammount of growth on a large main stem that is completley hollow at the base would be un-necessary, as well as all the crap in the crown which is never going to come to anything worthwhile. I dont get to do many crown thinnings or crown cleaning for that matter, normally we are slashing them down by any means possible on the railway or carrying out remedial works or sectional feling or dismantling so I'm not really up to speed on crown maintenance work, which is why I appreciate anyones comments as it's an area I'd like to do more with.
  11. Nah, I dont mind you saying what you think.... thats why I posted the pics up! Personally, I dont think it;s over thinned owing to the fact that the tree is goosed, and the idea behind the job was to take out all the crap, all the deadwood and any un-necessary growth.
  12. lol - they are standard bits of kit around here...
  13. I've had no end of problems with this trailer towing issue... If you actually go into it all and research it you will find that most chippers can be towed completley legally with something like a double cab pick up depending on the GVM etc. I lost a job a few months back because of this issue, which I was annoyed about because it would have been worth a fair bit of money, so I looked into it and then took the evidence to the contract manager and made him eat his words. I believe I found all the info I needed on the direct gov site.. if I can find the link i'll post it up later, but ou can deffinatley tow a Jensen 540T with a plant trailer on a Mitsubishi L200, all the weight worked out just slightly under the GVM limmit.
  14. Nah, we left the extraction to them.... they think it will be an easy job with a quad???!??!! lol I rekon there about 30/35 ton in total..... good luck with that lot and a quad.
  15. The tree is fecked... has a big split through the middle of it from the base up to about 8ft and the growth above the first fork is looking quite weak.. Didnt dare put a line in higher for a big branch walk so that left shimmeyng up the snapped limb, which was much more fun anyway...!
  16. Aye, the clients were a local estate, and they wouldnt pay for a chipper or extra member of staff so they decided to do the clear up in-house... rather them than me!! We just left all the brash in neat piles and all the logs in manageable sizes stacked ready for collection. Out of the three trees that came down I estimate there was about 8 cube in it all together.
  17. Does anybody have any advice on mapping software? I often have to print out maps to send guys to jobs and also for marking out areas on OS maps, and aerial images etc.. Cant seem to find any decent software to get 3d OS maps.. A friend of mine has some software from OS which allows 3d imaging and printing etc but it won't do aerial shots.. below is an example of a recent project aimed at grouse moor clearance for a local estate, but the image when printed was quite small and not really good enough to give to a client.. It looks fine on the computer but just not big enough or high quality.
  18. A job we did a couple of weeks ago, not had a chance untill now to get pics up.. Respacing and Thinning to create an amenity belt along a long driveway up to a house.. great place to work, stunning views right in the heart of the highlands. There's quite a few pics - sorry if it bores anyone.
  19. Bit of a cut and chuck job.... one of last weeks jobs, removing three scots pines on a local estate.
  20. I have a nice CZ 550 .243 with a bull barrel on it as well, which has a set trigger and is a real pleasure to shoot, but still prefer the .270, you really know it when you pull the trigger. For bunnies the best tool I have is my BRNO .22 rim fire - cracking little rifle, and with the silencer its basically quieter than an air rifle, and accurate easily to 100yds, depending on who's shooting it!
  21. One of last weeks jobs.... finally getting photos up of recent work. This ash has two failed limbs and some deadwood, simple job to remove limbs which were hanging down over a very busy public footpath allong a local river.. When I shimeyed up the larger of the two limbs I was amazed at how little material was left supporting all that weight, we are talking a slither of wood approximatley half an inch wide by about 3mm and 4 inches long.
  22. Sod all of that...... much prefer my .270, it's magic on anything, including bunnies, as long as you like riette!
  23. Here's a before and after shot af a crown thinning and deadwooding job I did on Sunday. More pics coming thisevening.
  24. As far as I know Sawmonkey, you dont need any specific tickets as such, but a chapter 8 ticket for signage would be kind of essential... unless you have a member of the team specifically to deal with signage and traffic control who has a chapter 8 qualification. You also need somebody to liase with the local council to obtain permits, and you need permission if you need to close a carriageway for more than 10 minutes I think it is.. may be wrong but I think thats right.
