  1. I was thinking if you could fill the gap in the cambium with something porus that would hold moisture then it may help it come back and I wouldnt mind betting that it would heal over in time..... got me interested this... is it possible to do a graft?
  2. Did an emergency call out on the railway in Plockton, right allong where they filmed 'Hamish Macbeth' - There are stunning views across the loch to Applecross from Plockton and that whole area is a true beauty. If you make it to Plockton, look out for the lichen growing on the birches..... while I was there I saw the biggest lichen growths i've ever seen, like something out of a cartoon.
  3. Sounds about right... Have heard of people putting copper nails etc into trees in an effort to kill them off looking for future work.... but never ring barking.... thats a whole new low! Is there any way to seal up a cambium wound like that?? Not meaning to sound too drunk, but would cotton wool and then some kind of outer sealing layer help it back a bit?? Maybe I do sound drunk....
  4. £8/hr - £64/day ???? won't be applying for that one any time soon...
  5. Mind to make sure you get a felling license mate..especially if it's easily accessible from the road.
  6. Lancs - depends what you want to do, everywhere is nice up here... If I were you, from Oban I would travel up through glencoe and then out past fort william to for augustus on the A82 and then on to inverness and head north west again for Ullapool. If you make it to Ullapool, I had a fantastic meal at the Seafourth, which is right opposite the harbour and where you get the ferry to Stornoway. Failing all that, go up through glencoe, and through fort william, and out to Spean Bridge, take the back road up to Newtonmore and then on to Aviemore and have a stroll around at the top of the Cairngorms.. you could do that and then take some distillery tours at any number of local distilleries. Theres a few good restaurants around here too... Andersons in Boat of Garten do fantastic food, as does the Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore and Dalrachney Lodge in Carrbridge as well as Craggan Mill near Grantown-on-Spey.
  7. Looks a good technique...... how does the set up work?? If I was your customer I would be very grateful for you not ploughing up my lawn!!
  8. The method statements we have used in the past are more about the different phases of a job and the different processes and services required to completle a job rather than the actual method of work.. For example, a method statement for railway de-veg shows where we start, what the spec of the job is and what cearance is required, through different sections of the line and which sections will be done on night shift and which require climbers etc
  9. NGR - national grid reference/OS grid reference etc, we have to have it on all job specific paperwork. I should say it's a fine statement for a construction company or a management firm, but a management firm shouldnt really require a method statement from you as it's part of their job to 'manage' that side of things.. Have you used the statement for the FC or any LA work??
  10. Sorry....... positive points... I like the way it lists out all the BS numbers and specific legislation relating to PPE, EN numbers etc.. I also like the fact that it is simple and easy to read. I think there should be a section in there with the tree ops relating to windblow and storm damage as well as the pruning, felling, section felling etc.
  11. Just seen this post, didnt realise you had replied to it. Put it this way - if you presented me with that method statement prior to carrying out works on a commercial contract for me, I would decline it. For starters - is it a risk assessment or a method statement? Or both? Secondly, it misses out key info like access NGR, site NGR etc. Also, it does not directly relate to any accompanying documents such as a health and safety policy, site specific risk assessment, generic risk assessment, local environment risk assessment and/or other specific company policies.. Like I said, it would be fine for domestic work, and probably overkill at that but I dont think it's a winner for commercial contracts... just my opinion, sorry if that dosent suit.
  12. I'm based from Carrbridge/Boat of Garten area.... welcome to the forum!!

  13. Just had a look at the figures involved here.... It works out on 6k a year at £7 p/h that you are only working 21 weeks of the year?? Honestly mate, if you work basically full time, or work commited to this chap for 6k a year - you're a mug! You should talk to your boss about your grievances, not have a discussion about it here.. your boss is the only one who can change any of it. If it was me, I would be down the road with someone else, and with a contract of employment, good terms and good pay - or self employed slogging it like the rest. Good luck whatever you decide to do!
  14. Live/Work in Scotland... does that count? From Suffolk originally.
  15. Did a similar thing last year with a spalted sweet chestnut... ringed up and onto the firewood heap and then one of my mates told me it would have been worth really good money for turning bowls etc. Gutted!
  16. Can we please have an arb event in Aviemore or Inverness?!?!?!?!?!? No chance of us loy up here making it down ti kent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. Just had a quick glance through that method statement....... it is in no way professional or competent enough for our critera although i think it would be magic for most domestic jobs.
  18. I see..... well that just goes to show how often I venture into the tree care forum!! hehe
  19. I dont know how many pull ups I can do...... I know it's a fair few though! (way way more than 10) What happens if you are on a course with a big unfit slob, surely that holds everyone else up??
  20. Maybe even a copy of the BS for tree work and pruning etc as well ??
  21. That's a great idea Steve!! Another idea would be to have a section where members can download all the relevant and up-to-date AFAG guides as well as machinery usage/maintenance and loler usuage records etc
  22. wow nice kit Skyhuck...... I am envious. I was using this for an hour or so this afternoon - great fun! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BU3bWOAU8g]YouTube - Timberjack harvesting windblow in the Highlands[/ame]
  23. That's nothing! I actually got some sawdust in my eye today! I even had to put my visor down in the finish!!!!!!
  24. normally have my strop somewhere or other or use my flip line as long as it can be adjusted and use that
  25. Nice view stevie... Must make all the difference to the properties.
