  1. I agree. I know we are slightly of topic here, but a lifetime ban for all drink drivers would be fine with me. I never even have a shandy when out. For me, it's not the fact that you may be over the limit, but the fact that you might injure or kill someone; and thats somethink I could never live with.
  2. What if they were a drink driver and had crashed and not hurt anyone. Would you still want them hanged?
  3. Lots of people don't fit into a 'normal society'. If you want to live in a safe, secure and civilized society then you would need the 'removal' of murderers, burglers, drug dealers, fraudsters, drink drivers and numerous other people. Do you propose to hang em all? I don't agree with the death penalty as there will always be doubt in certain cases as to wether a person is guilty. If new evidence came to light a few years later then it would be too late for them. However, I do agree in severe punishment for criminals. Life should mean life. Burglars and other petty criminals should be made to clean all the rubbish off our streets and roads. If they refuse to do it, then throw them in a cell with just a bed and a toilet. This is just my opinion. Changing the subject, I do agree with skyhucks opinions about NPTC tickets and refreasher training
  4. The scientfic world could not function without a universal language, wether it be for fungi, bacteria, trees or animals. Everyone knows some botanical names for instance Rhododendron and Magnolia. We were told at college that they were botanical names not latin as a number of trees have part non-latin names eg Malus 'Golden hornet'. Although, I dont use them day to day, they still have their place
  5. 2.5 ha is a lot to spray with a knapsack if the bracken is 5 or 6 ft high. If it's small thin stuff then you should be ok. What about a tractor mounted sprayer? is it accessable? don't forget that you won't see the results till next year. I spray bracken for about 5 weeks every year, and have done for the last 12 years. most of it is on moorland estates and we do follow-up spraying after the helicopter. I use knapsack with added dye so you dont go round in circles. We also use a wetter for a better kill. Which ever way you do it you will need to spray again in the following years to eventually kill it off. Otherwise you will be back to square one in a few years. I can't overestimate this enough. You may think you will kill off the lot in the first year. But little bits will survive and continue to multiply in the following years. The kill is best in really thick bracken. In thin stuff the kill can be hit and miss.
  6. Not that it matters too much, but I'd be very surprised if they are true black poplar. They are supposed to be a very rare tree.
  7. sounds like what I originally thought, charge VAT but will have a work with HMRC first
  8. I'm vat registered, If I buy a commercial vehicle with no vat on it (L200 by the way) do I charge vAT on it when I sell it? I presume so, but can anyone clarify this?
  9. Have just had new no-stress box on my tw chipper. I think it kicks in too late and was told by the dealer that to adjust it all you do is turn the screw on the side of the box. Now, there are two screws on the side of the box and I can't remember which one he said to turn. the other screw was not to be turned in any circumstances. can anyone help?
  10. one of mine was leaking once. Local mechanic put a new set of seals in it and has'nt been a problem since
  11. keep on at NFU. they said 15m height restriction to me and I told them this was no good. They then said 30m which is ok for me. (neck end of 100 feet)
  12. this was quite an old post. I have used the husky oil and have had no problem with the saw
  13. try greentech, but don't bother with pro biactive. Iv'e sprayed hundreds of thousands of trees and the cheaper alternatives has always worked for me. Use a dye (again available from greentech) That way you don't miss any and if you have any leaks or blue all over you, it's easy to tell. 5p a tree was the going rate about 10 years ago. get an extendable lance on your sprayer as it saves a lot of walking. If your doing it with a cooper pegler, then I don't envy you. One of the most annoying and uncomfortable sprayers Iv'e used. I use solo sprayers. far superier to CP. If the trees are close together then you should be able to do them in a good day. If planted further apart, in small clumps and rough ground then 5p a tree is too cheap
  14. Iv'e had l200 and hi-lux and both have been very reliable. never had a nissan but would get one if the right one turned up. I think what's just as important is do you want a single cab, (king cab type) or double cab. For my work I have a l200 club cab and it suits me fine. Theres just not enough cab space in a single cab for me, and not enough carrying space in a double cab. but thats just my personal circumstances.
  15. I'm sure the majoraty of Belgians respect our war memorials, but occasionally things like this have to happen, the world changes. Time marches on. Iv'e been all around the war graves in Belgian and france and have never seen any vandalism on any of them. Take a look around any of them and you can't help but feel moved and emotional. Went round Bayeaux war cemetry once and it's huge. Someone had left flowers on one british grave saying 'to a father I never knew' and it still moves me when I think of that. I think all of theschool kids today should be made to go round the cemetries. It might just make them think what their grandparents and great grandparents went through for us all.
  16. I thought it was around 50p each for the .6 and .75
  17. does anyone out there know labour only rate for planting 60-90cm trees in tubes shelters could do with approx rates for 0.6, 0.75 and 1.2m tubes
  18. Hitchcock, most of his films are great. Good old fashoned westerns. John ford's films are really worth a look. She wore a yellow ribben and The searchers are classics. Howard Hawks screwball comedies are worth a look. His western Rio Bravo is also worth watching Bad Day at Black Rock, a great modern (post war ) western with Spencer Tracy. The Maltese Falcon. Another classic The Last Picture show. early 1970's film with an oscar winning performance from Ben Johnson The stiff upper lip british war movies are great eg dambusters, sink the Bismark the long and the short and the tall
  19. check that the little hole that allows oil into the bar groove is not blocked
  20. about £230 plus vat a day for lights and signs, but just put up. nobody from lights firm to control them. have to do it yourself if you want them all red.
  21. Iv'e got a lewis winch and run it off a 372. It will only pull the 8000 pounds with a 90cc saw, through a snatch block. I find the 372 fine. I had a few problems with their wire rope, so got myself some dynema rope of the net, reels in a lot better than the wire rope. great for pulling timber out of awkward places and for pulling the chipper about in tight places. very useful piece of kit. great for quick simple pulling of small trees. But stick with the tirfor if pulling over large trees.
  22. if it's like mine, it could be the recitifer/regulater. On kohler engines its on the side of the engine. I believe this is more common than the stater being a problem.
  23. take a look at lewis winch. I have one and its pretty useful
  24. Have got hold of an old 6x3 metal oil tank and intend to turn it into a secure chainsaw store. bit of cutting here and a bit of welding there. If anyone has any thoughts on making it as secure as possible, let me know. Or has anyone used this method before? No, i won't be wiring it up to the electric. just got that one in before someone suggested it.
  25. ok, I posted a similar post a few months ago. When starting chipper, ch25ph kohler engine) the rollers will sometimes not go round. either forward or reverse. The last time this happened i cleaned terminals etc with wd40 and all was ok. Have tried this again but problem persists. only this time the rollers only work in reverse when the button is held in. Forwards works as it should. if rollers wont go round you have to stop engine and restart. throttle up and see if rollers will go round. sometimes it works first time. sometimes you have to start the thing two or three times to get rollers to go round. Once they are going round you can chip ok. you can also allow the chipper to power down and tick over, and throttle up again and there is never a problem. Problem only occurs when chipper is switched off again. Hope this makes sense. problem is nothing to do with throttle rpm or dirty filters. I'm sure it's electrical but cant narrow it down. Could it be a relay?
