  1. Been using knapsacks for ages now, and am thinking of going to CDA. Has anyone got experience of these, and which types are the best?
  2. make sure you get a saw with the clutch system like a 372xp. Think this is called an inboard clutch. An outboard clutch like 364xp will fit the lewis, but it needs to be attached by a small chain (comes with the winch). The 372xp type clutch is a lot simpler to fit than the 346xp type clutch.
  3. I have used the basic Willans T22 full body harness for years now (dont ask how many). I found it simple to use and comfortable. Anyhow, a couple of years ago, I replaced it with the T22 half harness. I'm, not that impressed with it. The thing won't stay on me whilst walking about and I also find the main attachment point is too far from my body when prussiking. Has anybody else experienced these problems or is it just me who's doing something wrong. I would not mind going for the new style willans T22 full body harness, but am worried that the main attachment point will be like the new style half harness. can anyone confirm. Is it exactly the same as the old one. I live in the middle of nowhere, so trying a load of harnesses on is not really an option. Any other harness purchase advice welcomed.
  4. old black dryed-up banana skins. piles of sawdust. and pens. I empty everything out, open all doors and windows, and set-to with the blower. Works a treat.
  5. It's ok to just use kerb straight after planting. don't worry about it. In winter it should cause no harm to young conifer trees. However, it's too late now to apply kerb. Best applied during frosty winter days. If you have a knapsack sprayer, use kerbflo rather than the granuals. If the weather is the slightest bit damp the pepperpot keeps blocking up and does your head in. Be warned: do not use where run-off might be a problem, as this chemical can kill grasses quite a way from the intended area, and does follow water runoff
  6. You don't dother putting any oil in the chainsaw. Is it a lewis winch you have got? If it's a lewis winch, you are better getting an old chainsaw and using that . I use a an old 372xp, as it would do my head in constantly chainging back for cutting use. I always keep the winch attached to the chainsaw. Also, invest in some dyneema rope, as the wire rope tends to kink, and can ba a pain. Also, make sure you always have oil in the lewis winch, and use something to lock the nuts from the side of the winch, as oil tends to leak out if you dont.
  7. Just starting Bill Bryson's, Made in Americe. Read his book, about his experiences in Australia, his description of test match cricket had me in tears of laughter.
  8. Take a look on the arb Ass web site. I'm not sure, but they used to have some free downloadable ones that you could download and adjust to your own needs.
  9. Get her on to arbtalk and show her this thread. Almost everyone agrees that she is just trying it on. Otherwise, she is probably just one of a very small percentage of people who would not be happy if you totally re-planted her hedge, landscaped her garden, bought her a birthday present every year for the rest of her life; and told her she was the most gorgeous woman in town. To be honest though, tell her you did a good professional job and that you will do no more work on the hedge, unless it is for payment. If you do anymore work for her, make sure everything is in writing.
  10. Iv'e an 04 L200 club cab and apart from a couple of heater plug sets, it's been perfect. It gets lots of off road work. spends all august on the moors, and I'd certainly buy another. Engine has been no problem and does not use any oil.
  11. Thanks a lot, am coming down on Tuesday
  12. works every time and is cheap, but watch out for adjacent trees of the same species as it can translocate to trees of same species, Iv'e seen it happen
  13. I only use a small ammount of cable and attatch to a polypropolyne rope for winching things over. It's a lot lighter that way and I just leave the cable in the winch all the time. I have a really long length of wire rope, but to be honest, it's very rare I use it.
  14. As the title sys, has anyone ever bought a van from Manheim. I'm interested in on at Haydock this week, but their charges seem a bit vague. If I spend around £8000 on a van, about how much would the charges be?
  15. I always leave the cable in the winch as it's a devil to get back in sometimes. As someone else said, wrap the cable up in an old tyre, if it's quite a length
  16. I sometimes wear a decent face mask when ringing up certain woods, eg dead elm. Or when chipping really dusty stuff. Last week, I chipped some philadelphus which was hard as hell and dusty, so I wore a mask when chipping that.
  17. me too. But Iv'e aches and pains that I did'nt have when I was 35
  18. Conifers like pine and spruce are readily available bare root. and are very cheap. I'm not sure about leylandii, bare root. It's usually in pots. as for the comment about leylandii and never plant it : WHY NOT. it makes an excellent hedge. Birds nest in it all the time. So do wasps, as iv'e found out. If the hedge gets out of control, then it's a job for us. I love it.
  19. Yes, I always clean and grease the slide bits very well. Think its important as they do collect a bit of grime. I scrape it off with an old stanley blade
  20. a few pumps of the gun every blade change. been doing this for six years with no problems
  21. I make the bottom cut first, always have done. However, as long as you get the gob right, I don't think it matters that much.
  22. don't dwell on it. nobody will ever get every job they quote for. I just accept it and move on.
  23. will take a look as its yorkshire based
  24. Took a look at vehicle 'wrapping' could just work for me. did'nt know there was such a thing
  25. Iv'e come across an unusual pickup that would just do me. The trouble it it's white, and I hate white. How much (ballpark figure) to spray a standard 4x4 ford ranger. I would only need to spray the cab, doors and all around the front, wings bonnet, etc. But not the rear carrying area. rough price info needed
