    You will need to think about the legal implications of letting someone loose in your woods if there is an accident. You will be probably liable . I have 5 small woodlands that I use for crosscut & maintenance and felling upto 200mm, and never get to the 5m3 felling licence requirements when running the course. Even with me running the course in woods that i manage, there is always mess that needs tidying up, stumps lowering etc, but in the long term it is a benefit for the estates.

    Depends on how desperate the mill is. Aim for £80 per m3. Spruce saw logs here are £67 per tonne. Apparently there isn't much demand at the moment.

    Smaller scale forestry is the devil's own work. Dispite the fantastic videos showing how effective the machine is, the output never justifies the machine. By the sound of it for the money you are spending on the Iron Horse, you would be better off getting a Logbullet. With a Doosan 6 tonne digger with grab or tree shear , Logbullet , and tractor & forwarder, i can just about cover the felling & extraction costs with volumes over 100 tonnes of smaller trees.

    Yes you are overthinking this, but it means that you are not being blaise about the risks. Getting the tree hung up means that you won't get a shower of dead wood being pinged back at you when a felled tree falls through the canopy. Make sure your escape roots are clear and crack on. Once you have delt with a few, you will get a feel for it. Or get a 6-8 tonne digger in.

    If it was fire damage , i would expect to see alot more damage to the base of the tree to correspond with the levels of damage higher up. I don't think squirrels like horse chestnut, so i would be heading for some form of canker, or kids

    I have 4 sets of the Stihl pro comms for about 18 months. Despite a very wet winter they are still working fine The noise reduction means you can talk next to a running chipper and be heard by all. The only thing that lets them down is the stupid visor mount.
