  1. I assume any stock you had has floated away too? Does your insurance cover you for this loss? I hope you get it sorted soon. Truly dreadful.
  2. Some impressive lumps! Must have got the adrenalin going at times. Good job. I only hope the stump will be ground out and a replacement planted.
  3. Very enjoyable video. What was the heaviest lump lifted by the crane? What camera did you use for the time lapse?
  4. Just noticed this thread. Your insurer is the way to go with this. Assuming you are insured. They will do all the legwork i.e. liaise with your neighbours insurer, appoint an arboricultural consultant to inspect the tree, send out a loss adjuster etc. So there is no point in getting into a battle with your neighbour if your insurer's can sort it all out for you. Please keep us informed of the outcome and feel free to post photos. Good luck
  5. I am happy to use both. I prefer the build quality of Stihl saws but believe Husqvarna saws have lower vibration. Husqvarna saws tend to have better acceleration and Stihls more torque (but this distinction may be a bit more blurred now). As long as you maintain a sharp chain then both makes perform adequately as do (Johnsered, Echo, Dolmar, Makita etc.)
  6. You have hit the nail on the head. Basically it is grafting. Just as roots graft together when in contact, so do stems and branches.
  7. Just my opinion. I am more than happy for you to give advice.
  8. Its very difficult to give advice without seeing the site and the trees. But I would never advise any developer to go ahead and just cut trees down to make way for development. It only takes one complaint to the Local Authority from a neighbour or passer-by, who sees trees being felled, to land your friend/client in trouble. I understand what you are getting at but you are exploring dangerous territory and a public forum is not the best place to discuss such matters.
  9. Some of the terms used in your post lead me to believe that you may not have read the current standard. Reading the current standard will go a long way in (1)helping you answer your questions and (2) bringing you up to date! I personally think your clients best interests will be served by him/her seeking advice from someone with the relevant qualifications and experience. Otherwise I think you may find your self in hot water.
  10. Nice post Catweazel. Incidentally, when I was younger, you were my favourite wrestler!
  11. Interesting job Ross. Incidentally, what did your core samples reveal? Did you manage to carry out any fractometer tests or shake tests on the cores taken? If not, it might be nice to do some tests as a learning exercise. I look forward to seeing more pictures (including the replacement tree!).
  12. Slightly higher around the same height as the back cut will be.
  13. Being rescued by Pope Benedict in full regalia. Now that would be something!
  14. Yes you must be wary of kickback and you must also get your cuts correct. Never revisit the letterbox cut once the back cut has been started as the results can be fatal....not only for the saw!
  15. Here are some more absolutely incensed people! Are you frank-incensed? Perhaps because Christmas is nearly upon us?
  16. Yeah this is when I use it the most too!
  17. Erm? .........Nah..........I still hate Christmas
  18. Page 32 of the tree climbers companion. If you have it?
  19. Haven't they got vibram soles? All vibram sole boots I have ever owned have been treacherous on wet wood. Are the Zermatts ok on wet wood?
  20. Oh dear oh dear. Don't you know you should never cut an elder?
  21. Amazing that the police aren't getting involved! I have not heard of the sugared water treatment before and would be interested in getting more details on this. Does it work with Glyphosate poisoning? Have you thought about setting up a stealth cam in the area to get actual footage of the perpetrators at work? Getting such footage aired on the TV would surely act as a deterrent and surely the police would have to pay attention then. I suppose the difficulty would be knowing where they were going to strike next. Were the trees blocking a view or dropping leave into someone's property?
  22. Think of what trees you are likely to climb the most and their height. Double their height (for ddrt) and hey presto! If you are climbing to a tie in point at >20m then you will need to climb down a the tree a bit before bailing out with a 37m rope. Just remember to always tie a figure eight in the end of your climbing rope so you don't drop off the end!
  23. Very nice gates. Will we get to see them hung?
  24. Yes that's true. I have never had to climb a young one though!
