  1. This is true because at college, during ident test, it was 1 point for the Genus and 3 points for the species. But only if you got it bang on! if you didn't twas nil points
  2. Interestingly, I was looking at a couple of HC's in amongst wild garlic recently and they appeared to be in good condition. I will go back and have a better look around the area. Maybe Peter Kay was right after all.
  3. Every contractor, good or bad, needs to apply for basic works and that is for many a good reason. Get to know your AO and life will become a lot easier as long as he/she is happy with the standard of your work and your commitment to the cause. No LA can ask for 3 copies since the latest amendments to the TPO bible. Print off copies of the new forms and carry them with you at all times. Check 'Submitted Applications' 6.4a here ---> http://www.planning-applications.co.uk/tposguideaddendum.pdf
  4. What's wrong with your LA? They should 'Play Ball' and besides DDD trees and D/Wood are exempt form the application process. Just record what you are doing or removing with pictures/photos. Sound's like your TO is hard work.
  5. Did you contact the LA and advise that this conversation took place? The LA might have enough time to speak to the "guy" and do enough to save the treee. Also, if the tree is felled illegally they would be in for a heftier fine than normal if they had been warned or reminded about the TPO. Once a tree is gone - it's well gone.
  6. I have also heard of the bleeding canker type staining on Beech which you do not see that often - anyone any thoughts? Bleeding Cankers? Phytopthora? Why?
  7. Excellent course and a real eye opener.
  8. Check everything and anything. Do not trust the word of the client as you can be prosecuted as well. Familiarise yourself with the CA's by either looking on the LA's website or actual copies of plans. No excuses. It's not about size either. Not in this case anyway
  9. I see this a lot on Labs, It's almost as though there is a canker infection? due to a poor pruning wound.
  10. Check the bud burst! Ash always wins in my book as they swell to huge sizes just before the leaves emerge. IAlso, I was inspecting a huge Syc yesterday and the newly emerging shoots looked amazing as they are pink before the light hits them. What about the sticky factor Horse Chestnut and Balsam Pops to name 2. Squeeze a balsam bud and see how it gets it's name. Dont just think flowers.

    Dodgy Syc..

I dont agree that it should be felled. The tree looks like it has a bit of character with it's unusual form. Personally, limited info obviously, I would take a bit of weight off the long limb and advise him that he should monitor it's condition.
  12. I agreee totally. For me it is all about educating the customer in a situation like this. If they don't like what you are telling them - walk.
  13. Eh! Phytophthora has been found not to be the problem. It is a bacterial canker thought to be Pseudomonas.
  14. No, I am aware of that. The point being that if you contact your LATO and advise that there are certain trees need felling and it's all going to be done in a profesional manner, and less than 5 cubic m, then there would be no need for him to come out with an emergency TPO.
  15. Does that mean you have in there felling without contacting the TO in question?

    bats in trees

Guys, this is good info, http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-bat07_trees.pdf
  17. CA Exemptions (4) for work on a tree with a diameter not exceeding 75 millimeters - Diameter is measured at 1.5m above ground level.
  18. Crown Raise 2m and maybe a light thin, after it has finished flowering.
  19. Looks like a very old G bracket on an Oak
  20. Oy Monkeyd leave those goalposts alone
  21. Sorry for quoting you but I agree it could be P robustus a white rot fungi
  22. Cracking pics. May I suggest that the smaller fused branch was pushed behind the larger limb on the lhs to keep it clear of the arch? Just a thought.
  23. I saw him deliver a brilliant seminar in Leicester a few years back. I have never seen anyone in our industry get a standing ovation just by walking on stage:ohmy:
  24. Hmmm, tis a lovely spot for sure. What are the targets? Is it private garden or a public area? I see the (poor) footy nets so presume there are children around. Remove the deadwood if it is to be a threat to people otherwise leave it for nature to take it's course maybe. Shortening or reducing is good idea to take the weight out of the branches to avoid them braking off. There are a number of ways you could manage this tree. Imo. Retrenchment pruning?
  25. I am all for traditional techniques like pollarding on Limes and Planes. Not sure I agree on the fact that it has to be done to avoid subsidence. But hey, you know what you southerners are like with your dodgy clay. Also, anybody carry out any pleaching works? Looks great when done correctly.
