  1. I'm sure I once had a case where it turned out that the TPO Plan overrides the Schedule. What that means is that if T1 is listed as the wrong species it is still covered by the order if it's in the right place on the plan. This would need confirming as it was a long time ago!
  2. Never heard of a tree ident course tbh. I would recommend a basic tree ident book and get out there looking at form & function, until the leaves come on. If you are near Preston give me a shout and I will spend an hour or so on site giving you some tips and tricks etc.
  3. Have a word with your local TO. Also ask him if there is a local tree warden that might be interested in helping. For the seed info contact your local Wildlife Trust.
  4. Really excellent stuff. I did suspect that the tree had lost its leader very early on and that this growth was the result. Never fail to learn on here, many thanks.
  5. Interesting. I suspected that this was having a strangling type effect as I have seen it before on old oak but much lower on the bole which suggests that is might of been fencing or wire etc. The issue with this is that it is approx 8m up! You may well be right Dan but the swelling is all the way around.
  6. Thanks treeseer, the wound appeared to be callousing evenly but it was difficult to see with all the stress growth and the awkward viewing angle. Any idea (anyone) what causes this growth?
  7. If my memory serves me..... There was a Planning documentary on the BBC a few years back and one area they covered was the issue of re-planting. I vaguely remember a Planning Officer turning up with a Grounds Maintenance crew that carried out tree planting in a private front garden and at the end he popped a rather large bill through the door after they had finished. Must be on youtube but I cannot access it atm.
  8. Just wondering if I should be concerned about the re-action growth? or swelling on this Oak. I have seen it at a lower level on the bole but this is approx 8m up with a large amount weight above it. The swelling is all the way round it.
  9. My guess is Keaki (Zelkova) as I've seen this spp in Bolton, funnily enough.
  10. That driveway looks suspicious? Maybe there has been root removal during the construction of it, and is that a root barrier?
  11. Super, thanks guys. I did have a 'shufty' on the AA website but couldn't find that form! where is it located? I have just had a chat with an experienced tree contractor that before carrying out works has been "moving nests" and that he has been doing this "all his working life" Beggars belief.
  12. Any contractors use a bird nesting survey form or document that you are willing to share? Or if anyone can point me in the direction where I might be able to download one please?
  13. No worries you're welcome. I did struggle with the survey though as I have not noticed the problem. I will get back on here if I see anything. Hollies in this Borough are massive. We have an area that I presume is slightly acidic soil and Holly seeds like no other. Keep us updated on your findings.
  14. Top them, thin them, Crown raise them or fell them. You have to laugh at these threads.
  15. I always surprised by the number of tree contractors that don't carry out a bird nesting survey of the site before they start any works. I used to have a typical survey sheet. Anyone know a link where i can find one?
  16. Completed. I can honestly say that working in a Borough where large Holly trees grow like the clappers, I have never noticed this! I will now keep my eyes peeled. Good luck with your study.
  17. Good report Rob and great marks, really enjoyed reading that. As you know this is a tree that I have had some minor dealings with. Apparently I am going to jail when it kills somebody! Oh and by the way, the tree is not subject to a Tree Preservation Order and is not in a Conservation Area
  18. Hmm don't understand the RPA figure! What is the diameter of the tree and does it stand alone?
  19. Also mad on Carp Fishing and use a local one called Northern Monkeys. Mike Dolbear is a drumming forum that I use every day! And, sad but tree, PNE online. Not on there for long though at the moment. Keen photogeek so that sees me on Talk Photography Loving the tinternet.
  20. A fair dusting here where I am. It's windy and the skies look full of it!
  21. A fair bit of snow coming down now where I am. Doesn't look for tomorrow, unless you into sledging that is.
  22. The tree is approx 17m tall and the limb on the left of the top pic is approx 40" diameter.
  23. Love these pics David, keep them coming. Great thread.
  24. A bit concerned about the look of the unions on this large willow. Doesn't look to be badly included but I do have a few concerns given the fact that it is over a major road. Any thoughts or experiences with this type of union would be appreciated.
  25. I was once at a National Trust site in Cornwall and my relatives were all going to look around a large NT house. I got out of the car and noticed in the distance a scattering of large blue/purple flowering trees towering above the canopies of other trees. I had to investigate. I managed to scramble up a banking to get to the trees and couldn't believe what I saw. The stunning flowers were falling off the tree like snow and it truly was an amazing sight. Lovely trees.
