I would guess that they are cankers due to the tree getting old. Oh and try not to walk on the Bluebells?

Gritting with salt is just one of the many problems facing urban trees. The fact that we have seen a bad winter, from an gritting point of view, will probably have an adverse effect on a number of street trees, however, I suppose you could balance that up with the fact that the cold snap kills off a lot of pathogens. Maybe?

The idea of just simply removing and replacing old avenue trees is completely wrong imo. These street trees, as well as being important from an environmental point of view, are our heritage and should be managed correctly. Besides that they should be the bread and butter work for tree contractors and once they are gone so is the work.
