  1. Thanks for that BnT's. I am pretty sure they are Daubs because they come really close and they are pretty big. I have been on a bat course and also readf a brilliant book on bats so I have a reasonable understanding of them. My fishing is heavy ledger and rod in the air. The bats actually ping into the fishing line regularly, probably thinking it's food? A lot of anglers think it's a bind but for me it's just part and parcel of it all. Man and nature.
  2. First thing I noticed was the new hard landscaping? around the site. Root damage and compaction allows pathogen entry. Only a thought.
  3. I fish for Barbel on the Ribble near me in Lancashire and the show I get from the daubentons at dusk is amazing. I presume that they roost in the trees nearby because there is nothing else for miles and that they dont fly too far in between feeding and torpur.
  4. Dont forget to to include discussion on Cinara cupressi. The aphid that is now killing Leylandii hedges.
  5. It takes less than 1 minute to fill out TPO/CA notification forms and put it in an envelope. As far as I am aware ,(i.e. where I am) If you put your details in as the agent then the LA send you the consent/reply and not your client.
  6. Let's be honest about this, to most (proper) footy fans, the season has already started.
  7. These are indeed Cordylines and there are thousands of them that have been very badly damaged in the NW. I suggest that it was due to the snow that will have been sat in the plants as it was around for a couple of weeks. They are normally hardy to about -5 but it has blown me away how many have died/dieback. I advised a contractor to prune 1 particular plant in different ways to see how they respond. I am pretty sure that they regenerate from suckering so I would suggest maybe cut certain stems to ground level.
  8. That's terrible. RIP
  9. Interesting debate I had on this. My mate works on the skips and is amazed by how many plastic trees go to land fill every January !! I have a Norway Spruce (laminate floor) and also love the smell.
  10. I agree, indentify the tree properly and ask advice from the LA TO. Native Black Pops are a UK BAP priority species and very important trees. *gets away in unmarked white van
  11. Looking again, is that a Lombardy? also, is that stress growth at the base or is it in a privat hedge? What are the targets? I have seen something similar on a Lombardy and the tree was completely goosed <-- technical term. Is there any mechanical/physical damage to the tree or around the base ie, new road surface, compaction etc. Anyway if it's a Pop I would just fell it and replace it appropriately. Inspect it properly (whack it with a hammer/steel boot) before climbing it though.
  12. Looks like Honey Fungus Armillaria gallica? not quite as nasty as mellea but still a significant root rot pathogen. Have you checked in the ground for bootlaces? Not 100% sure, but interested to hear what others think of course.
  13. Lovin the 3rd pic Monkey - what camera kit you got?
  14. It galls me when I see stuff like this. If you don't complain they get away with it. Make noises at management level of the LA and demand answers. Public trees, like any other, need quality trained arborists working on them.
  15. Ideally after flowering or during dormant period depending on why it needs pruning. That's what I do on my tree.
  16. I am being stupid here! Why was this tree felled? I have seen a few Norway Maples ringbarked and very few of them actually died. It should only of been felled if it had died. Do you know if the LA are investigating the case? Ring the TO or the Legal Dept and ask if it is being looked into.
  17. Im my book this is not how it works. You are the educated contractor with qualifications therefore you need to advise the customer of the best way to proceed. Is this tree subject to TPO or in a CA?
  18. Quality Turkish 70's disco! Check out the lyrics on the rhs. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ0eL7GQRs0]YouTube - Nick the Chopper - Baris Manco Turkey 70s[/ame] Just for fun.
  19. Aphidlions, brilliant name or what.
  20. Bit rude that Monkey! Seriously, I agree 100% with the retrenchment pruning. It's plain to see where the shape of the crown should be over time.
  21. Honeysuckle
  22. Some interesting attitudes in this thread. I am do not stand by "what the punter wants" as I see it as my job to educate the customer. It's up to me to inform them of ways to get "more light" etc and if needs be I advise that it should be removed and replaced. Also, Iam of the opinion is it is better to work with the TO rather than felling stuff just because there is no TPO or CA.
  23. In our Borough the TO would go for a prosecution on that. Especially if you would be willing to stand up in court and repeat what the guy said to you.
  24. I did a HND there many moons ago and it is one of the best things I have ever done. Go for it.
  25. Any chance of any pics? I cannot believe that a LA would protect crappy trees in a situation like this. Come spill the beans who are these idiots?
