1. This. Personally I vary from hiviz to shorts and T shirt or jeans. Usually show up in the work truck but if it's further afield it's the Passat. As Mark says, I prefer to let my attitude and talking do the selling regardless of what I turn up in. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  2. I swapped to an old school safety razor a couple of years ago and love it. It's a Merkur and I got a selection pack of blades with it although my favourite are the Feather brand. I also got a shave brush and some really nice shave cream rather than the usual, off the shelf stuff. It takes longer but I get less cuts, ingrown hairs, razor burn etc. I do a double pass so one shave to get the heavy stuff off and then lather up again and do a second pass against the grain for a smooth finish. A good quality after shave balm to finish off with. Even against the grain I don't get razor burn. I highly recommend a double edge safety. Takes longer obviously but it's nice to actually take the time and care to look after your face. I got told by a barber in San Francisco that I had tough weathered skin and needed to spend more time looking after it. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  3. My wife is a florist and often does weddings. She gets heaps of requests for this kind of thing and I've supplied lots, from Purple Beech to Oak, Birch and Sycamore. Smaller rings don't tend to crack as easily and neither does Birch but to be honest, as long as they don't fall apart, nearly everyone finds that a small crack adds to the effect. I cut them a couple of weeks before they're required and they seem to last well through the wedding until a few weeks after. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  4. Rotorua is a geothermal area so yeah, it smells. I'd suggest Napier would be a good fit for you guys. There's currently a job advertised at Superior Exterior over in the bay might be worth a look. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

Hi James,

apologies, your message didn't show up on my phone so Ive only just got it.

With regard to work, Id suggest looking on Buy online and sell with NZ's #1 auction & classifieds site | Trade Me as theres always jobs on there under arborist. You could also look on Seek. Alternatively, both Treescape and asplundh have agreements with immigration with regard to bringing in overseas workers which could ultimately make your life easier with regard to a work visa. They are the two biggest employers in the country but you may find yourself just a number although a lot of the guys there are good guys. It depends on your qualifications, experience and where you want to work. Feel free to ask any questions, Regards, Ian

  6. Bay of Plenty i.e. Tauranga and surrounds, would be a nice place to be as would Hawkes Bay if you were based in Napier. Depends what kind of social life you have. I'd advise against Gisborne as it's pretty isolated and neither am I a great fan of Rotorua but it's a personal choice. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  7. Most learning in NZ is done on the job although some go through Waikato Poly. It sounds like you have more than enough to get a job here and pretty quickly. Honestly, we can't fill the vacancies fast enough from what I understand. My only advice would be to get out of Auckland and find somewhere way cheaper to live. We're currently advertising a position at Taupo District Council. We had 2 decent applicants and we may possibly go back out again if they don't prove to be a good fit. There was similar in Rotorua where no one applied. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  8. If you're a competent climber you should be able to get a job with what you have already. We're crying out for good arborists over here. Digger tickets (tracks and wheels) might be worth a go and also an EPV (MEWP) ticket if you can get it. Have a look at the jobs section on http://www.trademe.co.nz under arborist and you should get an idea of what employers are looking for. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

  10. I work for local government 5 days a week and since new management moved in we're in a similar situation. Some of the guys were told; no pay rises just go slower. Most of the guys want to do a fair days work for a fair days pay but after a while you see everyone else doing sweet FA and you get dumbed down to their level. For me, it's my weekend work and my own business that keeps my sanity intact. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

Also need to be thinking about future proofing. No point buying something basic that's so slow it drives you nuts in a year or two's time. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

    Laptops

Depends what you want to do with it. For me, with processing of photos, I need fast, lots of storage, and able to do multiple tasks at once. For that I needed a SSD, decent RAM, good processor and a half decent graphics card. All of that adds up to fast. Fast boot up, fast processing and able to have several things going on at any one time without any slow down. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

    Laptops

Have a MacBook Pro which I'm still struggling to learn how to use. Incredibly fast but if you've spent all you're life on a windows PC it might be a big learning curve. Also just bought a second hand desk top. It was a gaming rig and has everything I need and more for not much more than one of the all in ones currently on the shop floor with much lower spec. Might be worth looking at a refurbished gaming laptop as they are often higher spec than run of the mill lap tops for around the same price. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  14. Seasoned. Been sat in the mulch pile for several months. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  15. I have a customer stating that some mulch that has been placed around some neighbouring Gum trees is killing them. The trees are around 25m tall with a DBH of 1m. The mulch is approximately 15cm deep and spread around 2-3m out from the base of the tree. There's no mulch against the base of the tree. Any thoughts?
  16. Both Treescape and Asplundh are always looking for workers. This might be your easiest way to get a work visa and be sponsored. Failing that, get a visitors visa and then try and apply for a work visa over here. Both Treescape and Asplundh have agreements with immigration with regard to visas I believe. 17. Had this done in NZ. Got in the disco to find something not quite right. Glove box wide open with the contents on the floor but nothing missing. Figured it was young kids or opportunists looking for a decent pay day. When they didn't find anything worth it they moved on. Neighbour had his vehicle turned over (we never locked our vehicles here) and they took a camera and a phone I think. Turned out it was teenagers looking for easy pickings rather than pros. 18. https://taupodc.careercentre.net.nz/Job/Arborist/Taupo/21955 Anyone interested in working alongside the Great Lake? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  19. Nothing wrong with giving it a go. I've had 9 or 10 in my shoulder, some work some don't. When they do work they work well. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  20. Skipped through most of the pages, sorry, but, as a land rover fan through and through I have to recommend the Land Cruiser. In Oz and here in NZ they're the work horse rather than the show pony. Oz companies use them for the interior due to the reliability and here because they're tough as nuts. I hear people rave about the diesel V8. I had the six cylinder as a company ute and it had so much torque compared to the hilux. Still heaps of them about on the roads along with the Nissan Patrol. All high kilometres and still going. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  21. Man, that looks like fun. Did a lot of that on some big ass Eucs in Oz for transmission line clearance.
  22. Several reasons Reg. originally I proposed two climbers in the tree (myself and my trainee so I could watch him work and be close if there was an accident) plus an experienced groundie and a bobcat. First the bobcat was removed followed by my groundie leaving me and a very inexperienced trainee. No Comms apart from shouting at each other, 30m Eucalyptus. Had the confidence smashed out of me by new management which had left me second guessing my every decision. In the end, I just had a bad feeling about the job when all of the above came together. Usually, it wouldn't be an issue but it goes to show how your mental state on any given day can affect your decision making. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

  24. I'll freely admit that my mental state has spiralled downhill for the last year to the point I bailed on my first job in almost 30 years of climbing this week. Your mental state and aptitude has more to do with it than your physical I would suggest. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  25. I've got one of these and it's bloody awesome. Ditched Netflix and Sky and now have terrestrial tv and Kodi. It has its hiccups and problems but the choice is endless. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
