  1. You want to send some of that rain our way silky? Parts of the south island now in drought. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Just up to it either side. The tree has started to lean over the past week and is now starting to push the hand rail over at the bottom side. Probably would have looked much better if the tree had grown around it but that would mean a very old rail. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. Monday's job. 250 year old Kowhai. Main stem is seperating from the root plate around three quarters of the tree. Removal via cherry picker as I can now slide my hand into the gap.
  4. I didn't think the ZZ self tended anything like the SJ. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. Burning gum this year that's three years old and it seems to get harder and better with each year. I think it depends on what you're burning. I've also got some cypress at two years old and some of it is already turning to powder. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. Another 27C day forecast today Jon. Desperately need water here. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  7. Yep, drought declared pretty much for the entire north island. Hoping on rain on Sunday but its only hope at the moment. As for the farms; check out PGG Wrightsons or trademe. I don't think they're ever cheap but you can certainly pick something up for a good price I'd imagine. Exchange rate isn't good at the mo though. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. Fourth picture is a local outfit, working on a job I gave him strangely enough.
  9. Nothing too spectacular. This previously topped Gum had to come down because apparently it was shading a house. Probably the best tree in the group despite its lack of top but hey ho, down it came. No shots pre dismantle because I forgot. Just two of us on the job with me going flat knacker most of the day with the chipper and winch trying to keep the deck clear for the climber. Back tomorrow to ring it up.
  10. Same as. Work just fine together, no messing about required. Send em back and swap the straps around.
  11. This mornings view. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. I think there's a whole thread on power lines somewhere but in short, if you're not sure, get the utility company out to have a look. Electricity doesn't often offer a second chance. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. Still bone dry, still 27c, pretty much the entire north island in drought. Worst drought in over 70 years I believe. No rain forecast for at least another week. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. Bit close to the bone that one Ty. We have a guy who occasionally works on our team who has a chemo bottle in his top pocket. At one stage he was given no chance of recovery. Fortunately he's in remission. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  15. Don't mind this pink thing. We have few sports teams over here who have pink uniforms. Reckon that chipper would stand out a mile. Would certainly be a talking point, get a pink truck to go with it and I reckon it would actually be good advertising. No worry about remembering the name of the firm Just look for the guys in pink. 16. What MOG said. If you're not sure what you want to do and where, just get a work visa, come over and have a look and go from there. If you want to apply for longer than a year it will depend more on your qualifications and experience and who you work with as to how fast the visa is processed but arborists are still on the skills shortage list so it shouldn't take long. The benefit of working for the bigger outfits is that they have a shortcut through the immigration paperwork but again, as MOG says, you're just a number for the main part. 17. Seen them a couple of times rigging conductors on the pylons or doing repairs. Come along in a helicopter, clip on and away they go. Also saw a guy hanging from a line below a helicopter doing insulator inspections on the transmission lines. They just hung him there and flew from tower to tower.
  18. In total agreement. The cost in time spent putting your neck on the block climbing it or rigging up some fancy swingdingle thing to bring it round or lower it down would just about cover the cost of replacing fence panels, as long as that was all that was underneath.
  19. If you hit wire core with a saw at full revs your going through, especially if all your weight is on it. I've given all mine away. I used them all the time when chogging down but just don't see the point if they're no safer than a normal rope. The rope is way lighter and more flexible so what's the point in the wire core unless you're flip lining up a big barrel covered in ivy or something. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. Got to agree with Huck on this one. Hate the smell of Poplar, especially when it's wet or rotten. Also tried cutting it on the side of main roads and just above a beach sand line. Full of salt, grit and sand. One cut and the saws are blunt. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  21. Nice, really really nice. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Just re read the post and its a young lady. Pressured into it maybe? I get some people complain to me that they've been paying too much for years but do they ever bother to get a second quote? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  23. So, did she get a quote let alone three or did she just tell the guys to get on with the job on charge up or something? She got ripped off and if she's elderly and easily confused then I have sympathy but if the people are average joe blogs citizens then, although it sounds harsh, I'd say tough. 24. So this whole "performance" goes from bad to worse. I'm not sure who but someone forgot to do a services check at the site. Today I get called to a meeting with a very panicked landscape architect who has found four, that's FOUR services underneath. 11kv, lighting power, fibre optic and telecom. The 11kv and phone are within 1.5m of each other at the closest point. Today's question? Can we still plant Quercus coccinea? What if we run root barrier down the length of 11kv and telecom? For the record that's about 100m. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. You don't need a licence to buy glyphosate I don't believe. You can go down and get as much as you want. It's easy enough to keep a chemicals licence up to date anyway or, at a push, just get your farmer mate who's paying you to poison the trees, to buy the stuff. As said before; most of these guys wanting the trees gone seem to be farmers with holiday homes in the area. Topping trees on reserves, cutting them down or poisoning them is par for the course it seems. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
