  1. Same here Adam, got a possible job offer on the table in Canada. Just got have a chat with the boss and see if it will work for both me and them and then break the news to the wife if I decide I want to have a crack. Lot of water to go under the bridge yet though. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Well, a couple of meetings today, one negative and one positive. The first went to show that either my urban planning manager doesn't give a hoot about trees or I've brassed him off that much he just doesn't want anything to do with me. Wasn't interested in anything tree related. Sorry, thought urban planning included the streetscape. The second meeting with the district manager was much more positive. He's happy to trial hotmix or tarmac instead of concrete slab. More updates to follow sure. I've no idea how people put up with working for government departments. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. The voice of reason David. That all sounds so good, unfortunately I've been politely kicking and screaming since I got here almost two years ago, trying to drag certain managers into this century. I got warned a couple of days ago that I was digging myself a grave and it might be prudent to throw the shovel away before I got any deeper. Kinda caught between a rock and a hard place. Then I get thrown this one and I know what the right thing to do is but............maybe just have to suck the sav as you say and try and put some ideas into place. Meeting with the district manager tomorrow to discuss. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Some of these trees are from 10m to over 25m in height so moving is out of the question. Tried the raised path idea too. Fell on deaf ears. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. If I recommend removal of the tree the roading engineer will throw a party and start marking out several of the other 3500 street trees in the town. This is going on all over town. Until recently the roots were just ripped out with a bobcat. We managed to delay this one for a day or two but trees are low on the priority list. Move the footpath? Not in a month of Sundays. Every time there's a bit of uplift up comes the concrete and out come the roots, in some places three quarters of the way around. I'm concerned about the stability of the tree but don't have a lot of options. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. I've been asked to root prune this as the roots are lifting the concrete footpath. Current footpath policy (yep, there's a policy) requires concrete replacement, no other substitutes. The idea of a wooden walk, hot mix or block paving have been dismissed.
  7. Still 26c or more most days here Jon but starting to cool off at night now so sleeping is easier. Can't remember the last rain we had and there's a complete fire ban on in Taupo and districts at the moment. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. Just because you can pick up a chainsaw doesn't mean to say you know how to use it, as some of the lawn mowing contractors here have shown. As for the statement about competing with new companies starting up; that's just a fact. You still have to compete against them do you not? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. You're a star desertrat 👍 thanks. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  10. What a great way to learn a bit about other people on this forum.
  11. Ipad and of course the iphone. Still working my way around both so I might have missed something blindingly obvious

  14. Yep, quite recently. Dropping some declining 30m Wattles. I got down out of one only for another one down the bottom of the site to go over the at the root. No warning, no nowt. Put the wind up me big time and I was fair kecking it spiking up the others. A couple I'd planned to climb got the better of me and I put them over from the floor despite the risk of flattening a couple of fences.
  15. Some seriously enticing toys in that lot. Makes our 12 inch look positively boring. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. Spent most of the first half of that video cringing and wondering how or rather, why, people do what they do
  17. Popped in to my local Stihl dealer and workshop today and found these on his bench. They'd been dropped off by a guy from the prison service. Apparently the Prison service buys them from places like trademe. They needed tuning apparently but the tuning screws are for show only. Fuel and oil caps leak, chainbrake is flimsy as a wilted lettuce leaf. In fact, the whole thing was a bag of dogs doings. The Stihl guy had tried to talk them out of buying this rubbish but they seem to think they're getting a great deal.
  18. For my saws and machinery it's my local guys. My Stihl dealer has always looked after me so I'm return he gets the bulk if my business. For climbing gear it's all on line. We pretty much have only one specialist supplier ( a couple cover a whole lot of bases but nothing specific) in NZ as far as I know and that's Rich at Treetools in Auckland. I either ring or email and the stuff arrives next day. Occasionally we'll take a trip up but it's a full day jobby if we do. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. Can't figure out what all the fuss and hype is about. Utterly bored with it all. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. I second what silky said. I reckon there's a few of us on arbtalk would be keen to put some work your way for something a little different for Christmas and birthday prezzies. Those honey thingies look quality and I for one would prefer hand made than mass produced stuff. Already ordered some wooden business cards I saw on AT and I'm always keeping my eyes peeled for other stuff. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  22. Tried the Windsor chains but found them inferior to Stihl. Snapped a couple and found they didn't cut as well. Tended to skittle along the wood when trying to do a finish cut unlike the Stihl chain which bites instantly. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  23. I'd have to agree I'm not sad to see the back of those days. My gear isn't over complicated now but I do have quite a bit of tree bling and all the happier I am for it. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. As per Tony and some of the others. Started climbing late 80s mainly free climbing before starting to use a rope. Didn't start using a secondary attachment until doing a shed load of spiking in Oz in the mid nineties. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. I like the SiP progress. Nice and comfy even with a bit of a gut.
