  1. I think that would be ideal as a firewood liner. 7 foot wide means pallets could go 2 wide if needed. Fit with drop sides to stop pallets sliding, perhaps need to borrow one from my IFW dealer first. A
  2. When I retired from the HGV/PSV scene the 5 year stuff was just coming into use, it was at the time very very expensive. Having used synthetic and semi synthetic oils in my Discos for the last 400,000 miles I can vouch for modern technology. A
  3. Sounds like lack of airflow. I had some larch go a bit that way, it was in a big heap in a shed closed on 3 sides with a wall of filled bags on the fourth. Just stirring it up a bit with a tele porter. A
  4. Once you have an answer I would be interested in finding out more about your trailer. As all my sales this winter have been in cu m bags I am thinking of an IFW tiltbed with a tall tailgate http://www.iwt.co.uk/products/tiltbed/ct-tiltbed?tab=details Load it from the sides, then lift the body and roll the pallet off much like i am now with my GD85. Bit long to get in some places I suppose but as I get busier I can load 4 pallets instead of 2. That would have been handy this week, has 2 drops 100 yards apart 10 miles away wanting 3 bags between them, that is increasingly likely to happen. A
  5. As a general warning the action of getting hot and cooling down will over a period of time cause the products in Ethelene Glycol antifreeze to fall out of solution. They then form a sludge in the bottom of the rad that can block small intercooler pipes. For this reason it is recommended that this traditional type of antifreeze is replaced at 2 year maximum intervals with the cooling system being flushed when replacing. There are new now high cost antifreezes around that could perhaps negate that, but users of Bluecol etc need to be aware of this. Given the colder winters we are now having running a 50/50 antifreeze/water solution is a good idea. A
  6. That has a 23kw water boiler in it, it would run 10 big rads if not connected to your accumulator. The later models now have a 33kw ( W33) boiler. A
  7. If your flue thermometer is indicating that you are burning at "Best Operation" then you will be fine, its only when temps drop into the crerosote zone or close to that problems with tars in the flue and excess soot occur. You will always loose a percentage of your heat into the chimney irrespective of the stoves settings, this is the heat that is inside the flue pipe. You need the flue pipe so this cannot be avoided. The amount of heat lost will depend on the design of the stove, the more expensive stoves are better at retaining heat than the cheaper ones as a rule. Costs comparisons to oil and gas, have a look here Energy Cost Comparison | Nottingham Energy Partnership Logs = 5.47p per KW, oil = 7.22p per KW, Gas 5.05p per KW. Price of logs is based on an average price of three local coal/fuel merchants, this one Seasoned Hardwood Logs - Ignite Wood Fuels | Buy Wood Pellets, Charcoals, Horse Bedding & More Looks like a cube of hard is about £140, way to go !!!. A
  8. I sell stoves and firewood. Most of my customers but a stove in the 4 to 5 kw range. Using the stove most evenings and weekends they all go through a cubic meter of softwood in around a month. I would have said a stove with a 7kw max output was a bit big and I suspect that you may be running the stove closed down a bit, this will reduce the flames to a degree and increase soots in the flue. For the size of stove you have I would say your esage is about right. A
  9. Wonder how long the combustible door liner and fittings will take before the burst into flames, maybe an hour methinks. Toxic fumes from the plastic as well !. But good for a laugh. A
  10. Thinking about it the extra weight of the grapple and hyd unit would take it over a DISCO's tow limit. A
  11. Bailey's - Road Log Trailer 2.5 Ton Carry 2.5 tons, around 700 kg empty, I think a Disco could pull that on road at least. No doubt its not e approved so cant be sent to Europe !!. Dont get carried away by the price though, thats only for the trailer, the grapple and hyd unit are seperate items. A
  12. Moisture cannot get through the bark. When cut and left in the round moisture within the wood can only get out of the end grain. I processed some last spring that had been down some time, moisture a foot inside the log was 27%, on the cut face about half that. Split is asap and get it undercover, as others have said birch rots pretty fast. Sell it next winter. A
  13. Would the silage clamp product they do not be suitable ?, suspect it might be non breathing though. A
  14. I wonder if this could be used as Paddy requires ?. A
  15. I have seen this winter on the front of a new farmers shed vented material like that we use on arb bags, the most ventilated sides. This was in rolls each covering one bay of a barn with one open side. No idea who supplies it though, I was a guest of the shooting tenant not the farmer. A
  16. Thanks Stu, Geoff
  17. I stalk ( and shoot) deer as do a number of my friends, while northern scotland is a bit to far for me I am sure I could if required find a suitable insured guy ( or girl) to control excess deer at no cost but a 1 hectare plot is pretty small. Ideally the deer need to be controlled over a wider area. A
  18. Providing it's dry it is fine. A
  19. I dont think .6m would be anywhere near tall enough. Roe are the size of a sheep so can browse over 1m if so inclined. They prefer to eat certain grasses and it would be benifical to sow those if you can as deer lawns in wide openings between blocks of trees, this allows any excess deer numbers to be culled with a suitable rifle. I have asked a friend who has been involved with Roe for well over 50 years to register and comment. A
  20. If they have been sold as seasoned or ready to burn then you have a case. I would think you should get a refund. I saw a guy last friday unloading an arb bag of ash no more than 100 yards from my showroom, sold as ready to burn that tree was standing last week, the moss on the bark was still lush. A

    Willow

Willow burns well, this winter I have been burning some that was wind blown last spring, logged and split, stacked to dry over the summer it burns well. A
  22. I had an elderly couple come into my stove shop today and they will buy a stove. During the course of the conversation the chap said that he had just bought an electric Bosch chainsaw from B & Q to chop up logs etc in their small orchard. While not telling him that they will only last a day or two I first asked him about how he intended to sharpen it, he replied that he did not realise they needed sharpening, no file included either. Then I asked about PPE, specifically trousers with bib top, boots, gloves and a helmet with visor and muffs. He did not have any or had even considered that he needed any. I explained the damage a chainsaw can do to unprotected limbs etc, at that point his wife told him to take it back first thing tomorrow and buy logs in instead, this he immediately agreed to. The chap was over 70 and would have been happy to swing a saw about. There should be regulations governing the sale of smaller saws to people who think of them as a simple DIY device, specifically that PPE equipment must be proved to be available for use. A
  23. The only way you can use that trailer is to buy a telehandler or similar. If you maybe can manage to load the bags onto a 1100 x 900 pallet, placed so the pallet overhangs the loading ramp by maybe a foot to help access, once you have the full bag on it then put another pallet onto the fork truck and use it to push the loaded pallet further onto the trailer. If you cant do that then buy a telehandler or a tractor with loader or use a drop side trailer. Now then getting them off. You MUST have a pump truck, these are vital and not that dear, get one that can handle 2 tonnes. Shove the truck about 3/4 the way under the pallet, go all the way and it will break the bottom of the pallet. Place 2 thin strips (pallet wood etc) on top of the pump truck legs so that when you start pumping the pallet goes up immediately. Under the tailgate put 2 more smallish logs off the load, bottom of the tailgate wants to be about 2 inches clear of the ground. Pump the pallet fully up and then roll it off the trailer, dont get in its way when it's starts to roll !!. I dont know it this will work with a drop side and the loading ramps that are available as an extra, but it works fine with my IFW GD85 which is similar to yours and my IFW box van. A
  24. Now been removed. A
  25. I might be wrong but I think this only affects multiuse pallets, I understand that arsenic is one of the chemicals. Steve, please make a note, I would be interested in bags for next winter. Currently buy locally as I don't sell a lot, maybe thats because of the extra profit margin making me uncompetitive. A
