  1. Agree a price per ton then put the trailer over a weigh bridge. Some trailers have self weigh systems on them, talk to your local timber hauliers. A
  2. What sort of cost delivered to NN6 7PQ post code. About 40 miles from Bedford, I used to commute it every day !!. A
  3. Forget newspapers, they are looked at once and are tomorrows chip papers. If there is a local village directory then that is kept and continually referred to by householders, thats what to go for. A decent sized sign in a field is also worth doing. Sounds like we can all learn something from Facebook, I always thought is was kids and women, maybe it is but if they are ordering then listen. A
  4. Leaving logs in a basket beside the fire in the spring is a bad bad idea for this reason, at the end of the day quite a lot of wood has woodworm holes in it, this is where the woodworm have come out of the log and gone looking for new wood to lay their eggs on. Most dead wood that you process will be infected with woodworm when it was standing. A
  5. Yes, it should be no problem because as a trader they will reclaim the VAT you charge and pay the VAT they collect. A
  6. Using big dia cord I am sure you will, my little JAPA can manage about 13 cube in a long day and about 10 in an average day given 200/250mm cord cutting at 240mm. A
  7. I think you are misunderstanding me, I was not talking about wood but stoves that I had imported. Another wrinkle is wood pellets, sell them for burning then 5%, sell them for pet bedding then its 20%. A
  8. I would like a look and a play with it when and if you get it, looks a real nice tool to me. Advice on backup and spares availability would also be nice. A
  9. If you are selling fuel to the person that is going to burn it then 5% is chargeable. If that person is intending to resell it then you must charge the full 20% rate. It might be arguable that selling cord to an end user could be charged at 5% but 25 tons for a single end user is a huge amount and the VAT inspector may take some convincing. Get it wrong and you have to pay not only the shortfall in tax but also a fine of the same amount and thats for a first offence. When I had a fall out with the VAT a couple of years ago one of their inspectors told me 'its not our job to tell you, its your job to find out'. I did my return last week, in the last quarted I imported some stoves from Ireland (Eire), they came in charged in sterling and zero rated.I rang the VAT help desk to ask advise on how this invoice should be shown on my return, what they told me did not make sense, I rang my accountants, it did not make sense with them either, the accountants rang the VAT and received info that was 100% different to what the VAT helpdesk told me, now how do you put that through !!!!. I went with the accountants version. A
  10. Its not just that your logs are up to spec but also an audit trail of where they come from and when felled, MC etc etc. All sensible practise that sets you apart from your competitors. A
  11. I speak as I find, I have sold quite a lot ( 150+) of Esse stoves and not had a single stove warranty issue of any sort. Esse only have one service engineer covering the whole country, he does both cookers and stoves. He is available in under a week usually, that suggests to me that there are no quality issues to speak of at all. All Esse stoves now carry a badge on the glass signed by the person who built the stove and the date it was built, if there ever was an issue then the fault can be traced back to the individual who built it immediatly. If there was any quality issue I would bin them immediatly as I have a couple of other well known brands who decided to move their manufacturing overseas to the cost of their quality. I will not sell or recommend anything I would not install into my own home. A
  12. Thats actually very true !!. Burns lovely, lots of heat but soon needs a refill. Only way out of that is to suggest they mix it with some wetter stuff. Ideal MC is 14-15%. A
  13. Cheap Chinese crap IMHO. Average life of stoves of this quality is likely to be 3 -5 years, if that suits (if moving house etc) then fine but if you are staying put then buy something that will last 25 years plus such as an Esse or similar, good solid British engineering, made by hand in Lancashire for well over 100 years. These 'Sunrain' stoves are I suspect also sold under other brand names. A
  14. You boys keep piling out the wet stuff, as soon as a customer see's someone else's stove that is being fed properly dry wood then they will switch suppliers, to me !!!. I have processed hardwood at 24% inside, no way thats going out till next winter. My soft is averaging around 15% at present, some is a bit higher but most is 8-11%. Almost everyone round me is selling 'seasoned' at 25% plus, some are over 40%. The only option apparant to some customers is kiln dried. A
  15. No experience with mesh sides admitted but I would worry about stability. Tipper centre of gravity is a shade higher than my GD85 range, loading 3 or 4 cube into a mesh side would put the COG quite high. 1 x cum of soft is about 600kg so you wont be overweight with 4 cube. The other issue is tipping with a mesh rear section, logs will jam underneath so it would need to hinge up, maybe they do. Just my 2 bobs worth, A
  16. GD85 is a general purpose trailer NOT a tipper. Thats why I want a tipper but the IFW tailgate hinges at the top, I did test a prototype this spring that cured that but production will not start for some time. It has not mesh sides or anything else, just 4 sides about 16 inches deep and a drop down load ramp. A
  17. I bought a used Ifor GD85 in 2003 for just over 1k, been offered £800 to trade it for one of their new model tippers coming next year. Excellent depreciation, wonder if Atlas does that, cant in fairness see why not, as you say it does look a tidy tool. A
  18. You need something to load it with, either a crane or a fork lift attachment for a loader. Given thats in place and the timber you are processing is 100mm dia plus then its worth having, makes life easier and the processing faster. I bought the JAPA manual rack from Fuelwood, works ok, I can get about 4 cube onto it. We just had to fix an extra support into it to stop short logs dropping through it. If and when I upgrade to a bigger processor such as a Palax etc then it would also be sensible to upgrade to a hydraulic rack. A
  19. The Scandinavians mainly burn softwood, given an equal moisture content softwood being less dense burns hotter than hardwood, just burns somewhat faster. Lob some into a stove and it bursts into flame within seconds, a real eye opener for a potential stove purchaser. Pine is what is used to test stoves for over-stoking, ie testing to withstand excess heat. I am selling 'Firewood' this winter, its all softwood. Next winter I will see firewood and hardwood or maybe a mix. A
  20. Not sure, I thought they were some sort of estate agent specialising in the sale of woodland. Not had any dealings with them myself. Perhaps traditional auctioneers may be a better avenue to explore then. A
  21. Woodlands.co.uk - Woods for sale throughout the UK Might be worth a look here, A
  22. I am not saying it cant tow it, it can, we both know that but is it legal ?. It needs to be boss of the trailer in all conditions, bloody dangerous otherwise especially on wet/greasy roads. A
  23. Is that the info off the Defender or the trailer ?. If the trailer you might want to check what your max tow weight is with Defender, you might be ok just cant remember. I tow with a Disco 2 which is a bit higher tow weight wise than Defender. I carry 2 tons of wood pellets on pallets pretty often, don't know that I would want to be carrying much more to be honest. Thats about 2750kg all up. Its a nasty feeling when the trailer is in charge, been there with 65 hp of MF 165 towing a ten ton capacity grain trailer at quite low speeds when I was a lad. If your 2570kg is the Defender then thats the all up weight, so the trailer itself plus the cargo, so if the trailer is say 750kg unladen the load capacity is about 1800kg, legally. A
  24. What are you towing it with?, a standard Disco?. A
  25. I sell quite a few. If you have high ceilings they are excellent at bringing heat down from the ceiling. Average ceilings then that wont be so noticeable. Heat will also tend to spread over a wider area with a fan. they are good bits of kit but beware of the fakes that are about on line. A
