  1. Recent BBC article: BBC - Capital - The city with 20-year waiting lists for rental homes Ty
  2. If the soil is cleared away from the stump, could it be cut lower using a saw fitted with a hardened chain? Then cut slots, high lift wedges boshed in to split it apart and also good old sharp mattock work. It might be a days work for a healthy apprentice... Ty
  3. I understand that some newer FWD vehicules have a system that limits the diff. Also, is it worth fitting tyres with a meatier tread? Ty
  4. Hello, I already know something having run 2 FWD vans towing a trailers but given the slight weigh advantage and price, are FWD tippers really that bad? Towing a 750kg chipper, possible with a grinder in the back. Also, on a separate note, tool lockers, has any-one retro-fitted one to an existing tipper body? Either on the body or reduced the tipper body itself to make room. I appreciate any advice. Ty
  5. Rotten thieving 'vampires'... Ty
  6. Mick, I congratulate you on reviving this word! Ty
  7. I like sharpening chains by hand but not for those who do not respect the time it takes to do so and so treat each chain as a throwaway item. I'd pay good money for a toughened chain for lowering stumps before grinding. Links to good sources and products welcome! Ty
  8. I like what I do when I'm doing it with the right people. Ty
  9. Hah! Certainly the Carlton 4012 is a liability if the dual wheels are removed. Considering the money I can make on stumps I may spend out more on the grinder than chipper. Ty
  10. It can be difficult at times, even using mojo's or whatever those wee smilies are known as, to write with the same tone as you might use face to face without causing 'frottement' or rub people up the wrong way. Guilty as charged... Ty
  11. Tracked chippers carry an 8-10k premium. Stumpgrinders too...? Ty
  12. Hello, Looking for opinions on new stump grinders. I've owned an HB20 pedestrian 27hp which earned good money but made me sweat and was not that stable to work with on slopes. We currently run a Carlton 4012 33 hp diesel with remote control. I like the radio remote control very much but this machine has had control issues from the day it was delivered and has been a horrible mightmare. The other 2 control interfaces are poorly concieved, being like swapping from QWERTY to AZERTY then BRAILLE... Up side is that it is a productive enough machine but one I feel is underpowered. 38-45hp would be a better choice if it could be kept the same size. Terrible off road traction too which makes sloping ground or even back out of it's own chip pile a chore. However, my restriction will also be budget. I'm selling my share in the company I founded and moving on, staying local but shedding the toxic business partner. So what is out there that works for you guys? I read alot about the old 3 wheeled Vermeer 252, no remote and manouverable but I can't face an old machine with all it's hidden vices. How about the newer version though, 352 38hp? Carlton again, 5014 but in 44hp diesel Bandits offering 2550? is out of my price range and I worry the 2250R would be too underpowered at 27hp hydrohead. FSI D30 I know little about but tracked it will have a premium price no? TBH, I would settle for the HB20 again as it was relatively trouble free apart from bearings and falling over from time to time. So talk to me, advise me, I'm open to your advice. Thanks Ty
  13. How much to cut down this tree? You want us to do your homework little boy? Ty
  14. Fitting a tachometer such as 'tiny tach' helps servicing instead of relying on judgement alone. I found blade changes to be between 20-30 hours and only once got to 40. Ty
  15. Article I found: B&SD "All of these engines are premium models intended for commercial OEM applications, such as rental equipment, that must stand up to years of tough demands. The design life of the V-twin Vanguard engine is 2,000 hours, but most commercial applications average only 500 to 1,000 hours, so there is plenty of margin in a Vanguard engine’s working life. Meanwhile, the partner company, Daihatsu, is producing an engine with a design life of 30,000 hours in stationary applications." Ty
  16. Stay out of trouble. Go it alone in business. Not bring toxic work issues home. Devote more time for family and less for work. Get back on my bicycle as it's a potent anti-depressant. Ty
  17. Our Quadchip just wasn't taking in smaller stringy, twiggy material as it once did so it was time again to give the rollers a new edge. The space between them was large enough for my fingers up to the knuckles, a good couple of cms worth. Having previously sharpened our Quadchip rollers twice, for the third tickle I took the advice of Jase Hutch at G.M and simply disposed of the machine at the local tip instead... Not really! Jase suggested that I try grinding the metal that acts as the actual 'roller stop' This was fiddly but do-able. After using a grinder with a wide disc to remove most of the meat, I finished the job off with a new metal file and alot of patience. The rollers perfomed almost as new apart from some play in the left hand one which is normal for the age. Ty
  18. A starting 'code' with start/stop button may be more secure than a key just as a security point. More likely a kid will nick a set of keys... Ty
  19. Wise words there Mick. Ty
  20. There is also a difference between comparable air and water cooled engines with the latter being more economical. Ty
  21. Ah HAH! Found this usefull link with the info from a manufacturer: http://www.lawnsite.com/attachments/fuel-economy-web-version_3-10-pdf.194055 US gallons to litres is 3.78 Ty
  22. From memory, my old Bandit HB20 with a 27hp Kohler burned 4.5litres per hour. Am I about right there? I was talking to a stumpgrinder supplier this week who informed me the 25hp was 10.2litres per hour and the 35hp was 12.5litres per hour. Ty
  23. Not so generous, I'm on 'gardening leave' and apart from leaving the houseto do a few quotes I am officially off work for at least 3 months. Tidy garage and fear I may get fat on my wifes cooking. More than happy to help. Ty
  24. Hello, Does any-one have experience of the more recent models 292 25hp and the 362 35hp? Also, average fuel consumption per hour would be usefull info. I think my 27hp Bandit HB20 ran at 4.5litres per hour. Regards Ty
  25. Chap, Having read all of this, I will go to Angers and get the trees myself if I still have a company vehicle. I could do with a run out. How long can they be kept bare before planting? I can dig a trench to keep them from drying out until transport. Ty
