1. The pitch doesn't dictate the file size, the size and type of cutter does. Re see Bolts post. Interesting question though and would like to hear what the right answer is.

step cut

First time I have ever heard anyone mention that the grain of the fibres causes any problems with hinges tbh. Apart from the saving of doing a final cut for the stumpy(which worked well so good stuff:thumbup1:) I couldnt see any other time that this would be useful tbh. You have to have some decent pull on there to snap that cut ie winch, tractor skidsteer etc so surely there is no need as they have enough power to pull it over anyway without worrying of it sitting back. An theres no way you would want to be doing that to a straight/weighted fell imo. Plus once its going its going, theres no time to nibble away at one side of the hinge etc to direct it slightly. Maybe I'm missing the point but seems like a bit of faffing about tbh.
3. Only in a vacuum. Our broadband seems to be a bit slow too these days.
4. TBH I thought anyone applying for the job just on the basis of the description would be a few screws short of an Ikea flat pack.
5. It's a it of a poor industry when it would seem the vast majority of employees won't get paid if they can't work. Surprising since a lot seem to get 2-3 times the wages in day rates per man! Assuming everyone is telling the truth of course.
6. I think I preferred the ones you posted yonks ago where you zoomed in or something. These would give me a headache I'm afraid.
7. I changed insurance companies the other month. This one and the previous were only interested in turnover and allocating that turnover to percentages of work, ie how much was tree surgery, stump grinding etc etc. Not once has any of them asked if I'm certified. They were very interested in what locks and CCTV we had at the yard for plant insurance though. I wonder if its because there are so few claims for 3rd party damage its not worth asking? I did have a thread ages asking if anyone had had any bad experiences in getting payed out for 3rd party damage. IIRC there were none if any responses.

Pollarding?

I think its a good way to retain a large species of tree close to properties and highways if done properly and regularly.
9. Some excellent prizes there. A big to all the sponsors. Quick question, do we get both ladies as the tip master prize or do we have to choose?
10. With the staining looks like an old crack to me. I would guess, oldish tree, newish house, severed/compacted roots with construction leading to the tree twisting and moving causing the cracks.
11. Thought this might be relevant with the odd few threads on insurance. Will prob just die of death though like the first time around!
12. Doesnt sound like nice neighbour but then maybe he wasn't happy about someone building a house a few feet from his property then complaining about the trees. I would say its tough on the new neighbour tbh. Heard too many times people complain about neighbouring trees when they have only just moved into the property.
13. Tbh if you are that bothered about wasted time and fuel why not just give him a decent sized saw from the start? I assume it's the same lad that nearly took his head off on the other thread.
14. Well judging by your username a normal one might do him fine. Gadgets, all men like gadgets. I'm pinning all my hopes and dreams on this.Moller Skycar M400 - buy at Firebox.com
15. He did, and did and it was worth it in the end.
16. Would dirty, weak, worn injectors also cause white smoke?
17. Whip the glow plugs out and test them with some jump leads. Well I say whip but not sure how easy they are to do on your engine but its always the first thing I check on poor starting diesels.
18. Do many take chondroitin, glucosamine,MSM supplements at all? If so what do you think of them Ive been buying some and they aint cheap but do seem to help with a bit of joint pain I used to get in the wrist.
19. I'd say its the lift pump as they can be damaged if they are pumped without being bled, well some of them anyway. If the engine isnt worn ie good compression, the injectors have a good pattern and dont leak and it runs well after its started then I would be replacing fuel pipes, clips and filters as it sounds like an air leak. Air leaks on diesels can cause loads of problems and be difficult to find, they dont always leak diesel out of them unfortunately.
20. Ah right thought you had some nice new technique. TBH though fast cutting through really tensioned/compressed timber isnt something I do, I've seen enough stuff whip about, explode and generally move and do what it wants so its nice and steady with me on that one.
21. Come on then man! I'm always willing to learn something new.
22. If you are hardly going to use the chipper then I can see it working and financially its probably for the best. If you are going to be using it quite a bit then theres no way I would go halves plus surely if its getting used a lot it will be paying for itself fairly quickly. I would just by a good secondhand machine on my own rather than a brand new one and go halves. Hope it works out whatever you do.
23. £60 to get to B&Q and back! Must cost your missus a fortune when you do a bit of DIY.
24. Which type of can are you using? Not that I can help just wondering which is the best one to buy as I could do with a new one and the husky and oregon aint very good.
25. I agree there. I think it is more to do with the injuries we pick up along the way rather than the age. Dont forget, your only as old as the woman you feel.
