  1. Think he was meaning the bar rather than the saw But yes, so far it's the best all round 50cc saw I've ever used.
  2. I wouldn't put a 20" bar on any 50cc saw - the 550's fairly torquey but I think 20" is asking too much of it. It might pull it for a while but it's going to put some pain on the clutch. Mine lives with a 13" mainly but did put a 15" on it in some sycamore and it was fairly convincing.
  3. I like the idea of it, much like I like the idea of the tiny echo backhandle. Think it could be good for underbrashing/formative pruning/cleaning in young stands but can't help but feel they'd be a bit disapointing to use with tiny engines. We've been using 242's a fair bit recently for that sort of work and think they'd take some beating. 550's good for heavier branched stuff and cleaning but it's a bit overkill for formative pruning.
  4. I really like the idea of that. It's the sort of thing that could work really well out in the woods for processing it at stump and cutting down on handling operations. Had a site recently that that would have been ace for. Bet it's dear though, despite it's simplicity.

  7. I've a 1985 181se that I rebuilt and that got used most days for a few weeks earlier in the year for felling some hairy lodgepole and crosscutting in front of the forwarder. Get to use some mid/late 90's 242's and 42 specials a fair bit (though one did suffer from crank bearing failing last week while I was using it ) Got a couple of mid 2000 357's a 2001 372 and a 2001 2159 that all work for a living too. The 550 was the first shiny new saw I'd bought since 2005 I think.

Because the 346 was a lardy, bendy, squishy lump that was only any good as a chipper saw Us woodmen needed a proper small thinning saw so they gave us the 550 In all seriousness though, when the new gen saws came out I was dead set against them, until I used one and was convinced from a power and handling point of view. So far I've been lucky though and had no probs with my 550, and chances are I'll be getting a 560 early next year once felling kicks off again properly.
  9. I'd leave the 395 at home and see if they'll provide a saw. Can't remember what they gave us to use but generally for cs30/31 it'll be around 50cc and fairly docile.
  10. If it helps any, we've just had a few loads go over the weighbridge on a similar Botex trailer (11T Euro trailer with standard height pins) and got around 7T of 3.75m Pine Sawlogs and around 6T of 3.75 Pine Chip

  13. 372 xp - think only difference chain wise is probably that husky is on 058 and the stihl on 063 Plus it's loads better than a 441 - you'll learn one day (nearly answered your question with "any husky - they're all btter than a 441)
  14. Maybe I'm just weird, Don't think I've thrown a proper tantrum since I was little. Never seen the point in shouting/kicking/throwing things about and tend to distance myself from people that do.
  15. I've had my current Oregon one for a good fw years and it's lasted fine. The stihl nozzles fit too. Only negative I can think of is they're not as stable as a stihl one when in the back of the landy but I got rund that by chucking my fuelcans, oil cans etc into a plaggy box.
  16. I've found myself thinking about this one a bit more. Recreational drugs are on the whole illegal, alcohol isn't. What people do in their own time is up to them, but if they are undertaking something illegal (whether in their own time or not), what other illegal activities might they deem as being acceptable? I realise it's perhaps a very narrow minded view to take but at the moment, that's the bit that keeps niggling away at me. Taking that bit out of the equation, I still stand by the view of being unfit for work through any sort of intoxicant should be instant removal from site and would need a very good reason as to be allowed back at all. What would be classed as unfit for work would maybe depend on what work was being undertaken I suppose, but surely to even turn up for work hungover would mean you would still be over the limit to have driven to work in the first place?
  17. Over the last 12 years or so I've almost exclusively used the Oregon oil and never had any problems. I do like the fact it's such a deep red as there's no confusion over it being neat fuel or not. It's suddenly got really expensive round us so I might go onto the Husky Low Smoke once I'm through this last 5l can, but I don't think the blue dye is very visible. I've always run 100ml to 5l of fuel when going into a saw.
  18. I still wonder why LR never did the defender with a straight 6 - it would have been ace. It just wouldn't be the same Used to have a HJ62 Landcruiser with the 4ltr N/A Diesel and that was a good engine.
  19. One thing I did hear with the Perkins ones was to make sure it wasn't an ag spec one as they dn't rev very high - knew of a RRC with a Perkins out of an old Combine that would do 55 flat out, but would do 55 everywhere, any hill, with any trailer on the back, just no faster
  20. Bet it's not standing dead though? That's almost got no grain.
  21. Seen a 110 hicap with a Phaser in it too - looked a bit of a squeeze but looked riht and sounded lovely. If sticking to LR engines, the 3.9 efi is nice to drive with. Had a D1 with one and it was fantastic, and on gas was cheaper to run than a diesel one but with much more smiles per mile. Used to love upsetting local boy racers Somewhere on youtube there's a 110 hicap with a Cummins (I think) 6BT in it - that's got to be about the ultimate work/tow set up

  23. Have you had a look at the Norwood Portmill? Not currently brought into the UK as the Norwood importer also is the Logosol importer and the Portamill would go head to head with the smaller Logosols. Have spoke with Norwood and they seem happy to send individual ones over. i liked the look of it as it seems to be easy to transport and easy to set up. Very close to placing an order as I think it could be a good first step as we get a fair bit of smaller stuff that is quite slow work with an Alaskan due to the set up for each log.

To be honest, I'd not seen anything as compact as the one in the link until last night Don't think it would be too difficult to make a twin circular bladed machine with fixed gap - from bit of a read online last night it sounds like there were quite a few homemade ones put together for when pit props were sawn in the woods where they felled (long before I started felling).
  25. From what you've said, (so based on it being nearly all chip) if it was up here, any money for it standing would be a token gesture.
