  1. A Client base.
  2. Almost Crystal, thanks for expanding on the subject.
  3. Learn by this lucky near miss. 1. Don't be cash driven feel free to walk away from a job if you feel it needs more crew on site. 2. Never do work near powerlines you could have been in hospital or the morgue call the leccy board they would have cleared this (in time) to a safe distance for free just tell them kids are climbing the tree right on the line. 3. Tell your dad to do it himself if he feels its safe to do. 4. Have a beer tonight and take on board the input for future ref. Luckily you can tell the story without any major incident.
  4. Now you have my interest, can you explain the difference between g30/50 and why such a price difference from £8-9 a tonne as you offer and £21-28 ton as ARBO chip as you class it can achieve at a powerstation etc. Clearly if we can get this higher price then business sense means get it to the client that will give your business the best return. So if a haulier could shift for say £9 a ton and the above price is achievable then why don't we all just sell to the top bidder as you can still clear £11-19 a ton if you see what I'm saying?
  5. You do seem to have a bee in your bonnet with power stations buying woodchip, why? I would always sell to the highest bidder so they would get it all day long!
  6. Sounds like a great job, was the spec from the council? I'm sure the HSE would have fits with the comment about safe to fell above head height!!! How about putting the felled timber up for auction for woodfuel seems a shame to waste so much great timber hornbeam is cracking firewood! Invite people up to bid for extracting the timber from stool. It could generate extra cash for you and the farmer. your day price is good for a 2 man team, I feel given the size of trees it will take you slightly longer though than you anticipate.
  7. try and find a local firm that is going into the wood pellet market, I know that in slough they pay £21 a ton for chip dumped at their site. Also know of a site in kent however you are up in Scotland!
  8. Another market for you is thatchers, they use the hazel to peg the reeds in place, also like others have said the hedgelaying market will buy green as the binders are nice and supple to weave. £1:50/£2 a pole is a great price some independent garden centres will buy them in at 80p and then retail them at the £2 mark.
  9. Adam, If you PM me some contact info next time I see my man I will see if he's interested in them, haulage would be an issue although he does have someone to do it, may effect the price a bit. Dave
  10. I use an old large paint tin free of charge and works a treat.
  11. Good useful equation that tommer, The guy that offered me that has his own timber supply company mainly dealing in reclaimed french oak from barns out there. He also now erects oak framed buildings, supplies woodstoves, into the pellet market so he must be able to make a profit or why offer the price. Someone else said thats a great price and if I have some stuff then I will sell to him. I also sell trunks of various sizes to a woodturner, gives some cash to play with.
  12. A guy has offered £8 a cube foot for felled oak, ash etc. What prices are you getting?
  13. I think that should say they were!!
  14. Mr Bullman, Look Arbtal is just 2 years old and just like my email account all the porn starts filtering in!! Ron what is your escort name????

    hedges

Hi phil, Go to the nursery just the other side of blean. They have all the hedging plants needed, self grown in blean so you can give them the sustainable source etc etc. I planted a mixed hedge in the pub garden of the hare and hounds as you pass thro Blean. Used hawthorn, beech and hazel. Looks great will take a couple of seasons to estabilish a screen. If you are going to do it now then you will have to buy potted plants as out of season for bareroot. Potted option is far more costly than bareroot. IMO you should wait till november when you will be able to purchase the whips at a good price from this nursery, you should get 10% off list price too. I agree with previous comments on yew, the thing is the cost of yew, what is the budget per metre for planting? Give me a call if you like. Dave
  22. Bald monkey as an absolute minimum you should have PL insurance, I mean I do some freelance and know full well that if you were to cause damage to something as a subbie then its on your shift mate.
  23. Yes Andy, the personal accident cover is a very important one not to overlook too. I think some employees feel they have to supply kit when not really necessary as this discussion has shown. Thanks for the input on this guys.
  24. I think its in there interest to be.
  25. This seems to arise in many threads posted in a general way. As I believe it under HSE guidelines if you are working for someone then they have a legal obligation to supply any PPE and training for the work you are to take on. So how would you guys out there that are employed stand if you had an accident wearing your own PPE and didn't have your own insurance? From an employers POV do you allow your crew to wear own PPE and if so are they covered?
