  1. http://www.animatedknots.com/sheepshank/index.php Shows and tells you all about the sheepshank! Couldnt agree more... To secure a tarp or raise a tent its reasonable safe but for other purposes....NOT!
  2. Its great! Than you and everyone else!!!
  3. Ah so thats how you spell it! Burl, will remember that. I´ve been collecting them as well...its only that this one looks slighty different from the other ones. It also has several lumps growing in the outer perimeter of the crown...same thing? Any idea what causes these? Different from "brooms" that are caused by insects -lumps with loads of twigs on them. So its definatley a burl theres no funghus that looks like this? Thanks Mike! Anyone else with a different opinion?
  4. Hi guys! I need some advise.... Sorry about pics, difficult light and only mobile camera. This Birch is situated in a "valley" or a hollow in a outdoormuseum with a sensitive target underneath and a bridge on the otherside (from where the pics are taken) The target is an old watermill from early 1600.... and on third side Highvoltage powerlines Anyway... I think it is a "Burr"(?) if that is the right word, only thing is that I have never seen one like this. It looks like it is coming out of the tree, rather than growing on the side of the tree. It covers ca 70-80% of the trees circumference with sound exposed wood on one spot. There is some loose bark around the "canker" hence my feeling of it portruding, rather than growing on the stem. Can it be anything else? Does it affect stability of the tree, possibility of breakage? The tree is BIG! The burr/canker is ca 6 meters up, and another 6 meters up the tree divides into three stems. BIG windsail! Ideas/advise? Thanks! //Tobi
  5. Nice! Ever put up a sign as explanation to the public? If so, what you write?
  6. Looks great Reg! A ballpark figure on estimated price?
  7. Hi all! I have created a series of monoliths/eco-stumps.... They are all close to public areas and will therefore be regularly monitored. To raise the awareness and inform the public as of why and so on, I would like to put up a information sign to explain the reason for this... Habitat, eco, wildlife... Suggestions what to write, pictures, any input is more than welcome! Ive already had comments as "Is that to encourage new sprouting?" "R U pollarding?" No! Reason is to kill the tree and give the oaks more space...! (30 year old Maples)
  8. This is exactly my point Graham!
  9. 45 degrees is old school! The reason for the angeled cut is for safety! Beeing back from a course (Ive been many years in the buisness and still learning!) By the book....; Stand on right side of tree, use lines on saw to aim in the desired direstion - do a 70 degrees cut on the stem at least 2/3 of the stems width. Still standing on the right hand side do the horizontal cut and look into the first cut, this will enable you to see when your horizontalcut meets the first cut, do a borecut from righthandside, adjust thicknes of hinge, if no wedges is needed (the weight of the tree is in the desired felling direction) simply rew the saw and cut fast and distinktly towards the back and step away from the tree. This will allow any tree to be still attatched to the stump and hence avoid kickback and so forth. Safest and the modern way to do it! Since Swden has been and till some extent still is the leading country for felling technique and chainsaws (Huskys) its worrying that NPTC still states that you should use techniques that was modern back in the 60:ies! And yes! In Sweden you would be failed if youd put horizontalcut in first. Its dangerous!!!!
  10. You have snow!?! I have SNOW!!!! Went out yesterday to help one of the electricguys with some line clearence... Few trees fallen onto the line...I had to move in deep snow...UP TO MY GROIN! Hard work... Got there in the end.

  13. Made me nearly piss my pants!!!
  14. I bought mine on a garden fair years ago when it first came out. I got a bargain deal on it as it was the demo one... I decided to buy it as I at the time couldnt afford a 260 and a 660. I bought it as a compromise some 6 or 7 years ago (?) I have used it with 2 bars for felling and ringing up trunks. Not as fast as a 660 of course but never failed to do the job. I no longer run a company of my own, but still does the odd job on the side. Best saw I ever had! The best allrounder in my opinion!!! It's a beast with a 20" sword....
  15. Välkommen! Fantastiskt fint!!!! Behave boys! Isnt attention to detail whats it all about? Divides pikies from pros!?

    angry kid

I'm not sure...I might have missed something... Why is this thread going on about Kid? Unless it's "Billy the Kid" the gunslinger (was it a chainsaw?) from the otherside of the big lake or "Spruce Lee" the gardener from China I think this has gone off topic!
  20. Hate that...killing your intention....why bother... Tried the papers for public opinion?
  21. I used to climb on something similar (tighter though) but no name im afraid... Can we have a pic from other side too? Has it been approved for climbing at any competitions?
  22. Had a similar thing years back... We were dismantling trees with a crane on a busy road in the middle of Stockholm, we werent allowed to completely close the road so trafficontrol was a big issue. My boss's dad got knocked down by a crackhead and I was challenged by a elderly lady who started shouting. She started by standing under the tree shouting rape! And as my collegues politely tried to persuade here to move on, so that we could carry on dismantling the dangerous trees, she grabbed the tree with both arms and started shouting murderer to me! (I was up in the tree rigging....) I asked her to stop shouting and told her that I would come down and explain (as a big crowd was gathering...) why I was felling the trees. I asked her several times to calm down and that I happily would talk to her, but I wouldnt come down to listen to abuse...She wouldnt have any of that...so instead I asked for the BIG saw to be sent up in the tree and f***ing halfed the tree! That shut her up!!!! Applause from the crowd! The City Council rep. gave me credit for not loosing my temper and handling the situation!!!!! I stopped him from calling the police as i didnt feel that it was nessecery and would only give bad publicity... The council wanted to spend 300 000 pounds on rebuilding the street and give 15 new trees optimum living space and conditions as these were dying.... the trees are planted and probably the healthiest in Stockholm with a growing rate at 40cm a year and in 4 seasons girth has doubled!
