  1. This prob would be better in a thread of its own... but it would be interesting to hear more about your findings. Pics?
  2. I can not disagree more. If we had the legislation over here I would have TPOd so many trees in my days...in order to treat the tree to a proper managment...riskmanagement etc
  3. Have not read the thread either...but THAT is hideous Topping! Should have been felled in my opinion. Fullstop.
  4. Good on ya! Trees ARE Good! If WE dont look after their best, who will?
  5. But remember! Beech is a very sun-sensitive...Beech grows in forrests where each tree is protected by neighbouring canopy. The branches and trunks have very thin bark and is prone to sun scald (bark cracks up) All pruning should be carried out in such a way that the bark is not overexposed to the sun. The roots are very sensitive aswell.
  6. Can you make my appletree flower more intensly but take away all the apples?
  7. Deffinatly when it comes to spelling i.e Fraxinus excelsior...
  8. Came across a very useful pice of kit...trying them out for myself now, but know of people using them for 2 years; http://www.treegator.com. Bags are attached around trunk, possible to connect several depending on size of tree. Bags are filled with water (75 liters/bag -140 pints or something?!?) and then water is slowly released over a period of 5-9 hours. It really gives the tree a chance to use the water and keeps trunk cooler (less waterloss) and the water will have time to warm up from sun... Any tosser can fill them up AND you are certain how much water the tree has been given.
  9. Already done the pink paint! Works brilliant...groundie found my zubat in seconds in a big pile of brash. Thinking of painting rest of my gear.... lol:scared1:
  10. Not one single guy working in Belfast area?
  11. Just scratch the bark...the scent is unmistakeable...! Almondy... 100% everytime! The smell comes from a substance called Amygdalin, used in the old days as an rodent repellent.
  12. Anyone working in Belfast area? I'm going in October, be nice to say hi and have a look for learning purpose... share info tecs etc. /Xerxses

  16. Thats my intention! Thanks for all your help. /Xerxses
  17. First attempt with coronet cuts. I didnt execute the takedown... If I had Ive would have left longer branches.. I managed to stop the full takedown and implement the idea of retaining the stump as a feautere/monolith, Citycouncil Landscapearchitect liked the idea and gave me green light. The tree is a Acer platanoides with internal decay. I gave all the old cuts a big whack with my hammer and thus created holes for birds etc. Week and a half later the Nuthatch is building a nest within the tree and several other birds is looking to move in! AND last week the County Administrative Board that are dealing with biodiversity and legal issues were shown my monolith and they absolutely loved the idea and the appearance of it! Maples around the area is about the same age and leaving this old tree in the area will help species of lichens etc to survive and move to younger trees that are beeing planted in the area. Sorry about the pics...mobilephone.... to the right of the tree there is a small pocketpark that is beeing used alot by the people living in the area, theres also a bakery etc, Next week a sign is coming up to inform the public about the tree.
  18. Didnt want to offend anyone, hats off for a job well executed! Skilled And safe!!!! If he likes big stuff I aint gonna be slaging him off. Sorry!
  19. 1. What u aint got in tha chrotch u have to lay hands on... 2. True, too long a bar makes a lot of teeth to sharpen... 3. and safer... Ever tried a 088 with 70cm bar? Bet thats faster felling than your saw... Roaring fast cutting chogs for firewood.... Im not trying to be smart, its just that its a bit too american showoff with a bar that length....Like rainforrest molestors...
  20. Whats with the longbar? I have felled massive trees but not yet needed a bar that length? Poor felling tec? Bar neednt be longer than half diameter of stem with proper tec. Explain the reason for it please.
  21. This worksite would be illegal in Sweden! I dont know law in UK but with the EU and all I would assume same rules apply. Over here that would be at least a ₤1000 upon a inspection by road authorities. I have just finished 2 courses involving roadworksafety and signage rules. According to roadregulations you have to stop and give way to oncoming traffic if something is blocking the road in your lane. In your signage here you are telling the driver that oncoming traffic has a narrover lane that usual and with your arrow you are telling him that its not a problem to pass your worksite, plenty of space to pass EVEN if a car is coming from opposite direction. DANGEROUS and YES you would be liable! According to best working practise over here correct signage would be; Men at work and sidemarking cones making the lane as narrow as possible to make sure traffic has to pass worksite at approx 20 mph (30 km/h) 3-3,5 meter wide. Dont use the arrow sign unless you can provide 2 lanes preferbly divided by sidemarking cones. If you park your car in your workzone make sure its parked in the end. BE SAFE ON THE ROADS!
  22. For free? This guy was a computerconsultant charging 100 pounds/hour!
  23. 25. I know we agred that you was just to fell and cut to managable bits...but since its just me and my wife living here... Could you cut the lengths to firewood and put it in the shed? (This was for real, just after we packed up and was about to leave....!?! AND he assumed we would do this for FREE!!!)
