  1. This is what happened to me a couple of weeks before christmas, quoted to crown reduce 2x silver birches, got the job, carried out the work with secateurs & silkys, customer came home from lunch when i was chipping/raking up, She wasn't happy, but i was well chuffed with the end result, that isn't 25% she says, oh but i think it is, she then came out with a photo of the trees & then drew a line across indicating where she thought 25% was, you cannot do that to these trees i say you will almost certainly kill them & could even de-value your house you're trying to sell but she wouldn't have it. i explained to her everything i know about prunning but she wouldn't budge, i even offered to fell them for her for the same price as an alternative but NO she says, they're my trees & this is what i want, either you do this or i'll get someone else who will, so i must admit, i did it, i almost certainly sent the lady of the woods to an early grave, but i have a family who needs me to look after them, i have been climbing over 15 yrs & the customer usually gets what they want, reguardless of best practices.
  2. I've just done my science re-sit written paper, i think it's gonna be a long old ride for me, god knows how i passed law
  3. haha! i like the groundie getting ready to leg it
  4. sunk the top of a beech tree outside a property a couple of years ago, got down had lunch, half hour later started to clear up, one of the limbs snapped on impact & dug into the dirt, pulled it out & heard hissing & the strongest smell of gas, you could see it coming out the ground, main gas pipe, every house on the road had no gas for hours, i had alot of abuse from the residents, then my boss when he recieved the bill from the gas company.
  5. totaly agree with you there, spot on
  6. we do a bit of work on building sites, we're not allowed on site without the cscs card, so in my eyes it was worth doing, the questions were pretty random though, nothing to do with tree surgery at all, one question was about how to set up scaffolding
  7. Treesource is a good place to buy some of the books you'll need, also if you're on day release then you can get all the books you'll need for free from the college library. I've just finnished a year at merrist wood & i have spent nearly £400 for books, they are really expensive & so valuble to me that i couldn't sell them on, sorry fella but i don't think you'll find anyone willing to sell their books unless they're changing their career & can't stand trees no more
  8. are there toilets, hot food, refreshments(beer) available. are bbqs allowed for the campers?
  9. only three weeks ago but i need to book the prep course with tree life for the management exercises, also i was informed by my tutor that the results come straight to us.
  10. just wondering if anyone has an idea how long it takes to recieve the results for the tec cert written? many thanks, glen.
  11. give paul or brian a call at county tree surgeons in crawley, 01293 616000, they should be able to help you out.
  12. For anyone who's thinking about studying for the tec cert be prepared to give up on your social life, freinds & family lol. It really is a mentally demanding course in which you have to study your ass off & let it take over your life but i think it's well worth it, It definatley opened up a hole new world of Arboriculture for me. I found it really interesting & thoroughly enjoyable & i made some great new freinds & contacts. I quickly found that on top of the one day a week at college, you need to put in about 2-3 hours a night studying & also set aside an all day grafting through notes, books & the internet on a sunday. It really is tough, especially the last few months. But don't let me put you off, you learn so much, it's well worth doing, one of the best things i have ever done. So to all the climbers out there who don't want to go full circle & end up back on the ground for the rest of their days, go to college & study, like i said before, it opened up a hole new world of Arboriculture to me & i now know what direction i'm heading in.

  17. I've never been able to get them to come out to take them down for us in all my 13 + yrs in the trees, Break the line & they'll come out, i've never been charged either, We just take em down ourselves, easy peasy

  21. After being in the industry 13 years i found out from Jack Kenyon a couple of weeks ago that a chainsaw will cut through chainsaw trousers at full speed, something like 150+mph, even worse if the cut is length ways on the protection
  22. i'd defo run from that one, bet there's loads of crap hidden in them brambles
