  1. Has long been a problem of all the Stihl filters (there's been a few threads on the subject). You can get an outer and inner foam lining but I found using this reduced the power of the saw. I just keep regularly cleaning the filter and housing.
  2. Is it a problem with the clutch bearing? Have you turned the oil so is giving max oil to the bar? I had a group down recently for a chainsaw milling course. They had a brand new 880. I'd run a tank full before they started using it. On their 6th plank the saw stalled. Went to re start it and it was pulling the chain round on the starter cord. The bearing (which had a plastic case) had melted and then shed the needles into the oiler (and knackered it).
  3. Even if the spark plug looks ok and seems to be giving a good spark I'd still replace it to rule this out.
  4. Great thread Ian! I've no idea how this works but sounds good... What about insurance though? Do/or should you declare this?
  5. Don't work for them again unless they give you an apology and a few quid for wasted time.
  6. Thought the vid was very good:thumbup: Only thing I thought you could add is yourself giving a small piece to camera so that customers can see what you look like.
  7. Well done for your first post but as has been said you really need to have done all your basic certs before doing tree work. This will teach you proper technique and chainsaw maintenace. Not sharpening a chain in a year? Most people using a saw regularly will be sharpening at least once a day. See if you can find a local college near you.
  8. I know I've said this a few times but I have been testing the new static mill from the maker of Alaskan mills - it's very good. This has been further modified and I should get the new one soon (ish). It's not perfect but from using it and some of the features I would say it will revolutionise chainsaw milling when it finally comes out. But I can't give away any details yet so.... sorry bout that!
  9. I've never tried straightening one but it may be possible. A bar this length will be solid and not laminated. What make was it by the way?
  10. Cheers for the offer Ciaran - I'm a golfer (or try to be!) so I'll have a look at your ebay shop when I have a minute.
  11. I'm obviously missing the point as well as I can't see what you're getting at. But this sort of reply to someone who is new the forum isn't very helpful is it?
  12. That looks fearsome! But if you misjudged the weight then you could be in big trouble!
  13. They do manufacture them I know but believe it or not you cannot order them from the UK... no idea why but you can't.
  14. But not sure if the Stihl ones may be interchangeable? So you don't have to buy a new system for each size chain.
  15. The pferd ones are pretty much identical but are £38-00 + vat. So the Stihl ones are better value. I've used the pferd ones for the last 6 months. They do a great job... .... but one thing is you need to buy a seperate set up for each size chain i.e. you can't just put different size files into one and use that you need the one for 3/8 chain and a seperate one for .325 etc. But still an excellent tool
  16. I've spent a long long time looking into narrow kerf bars but logosol are the only ones who do them. They also do the the picco chain and drive sprocket. But there is nothing standard out there for running on the 880 in 3/8n lo pro. The best bet is just to get a 660 to go with the logosol set up as if you're just doing smaller stuff then the drop in power wouldn't be noticed.
  17. No Tom we daren't go there again! Ho ho!
  18. Great stuff! Liking the furniture - wish I had the patience for joining stuff but an impact driver and bolts do a great job. Ash butt looks good - but plenty sawdust and fumes I bet!
  19. Beech burrs are lovely. Do you have (or know someone) with a mill so that you can plank them?
  20. Excellent! Shows that we deserve some merit for the skills we use everyday! Well posted!
  21. Sounds good what you're doing. I'll keep an ear to the ground if I hear of anyone who may be suitable. Any chance of seeing some furniture pics?
  22. Took me a while to get my head around burrs.... Take some pics of the ones you've found and put them on this thread.
  23. Not sure but one company contacted me and it sounds cheap for the wood i.e. 38 E per cubic meter but then it would cost another 38 E to bring over so 76 E which going to be around £60-00. I've worked out it costs me £40-00/£50-00 to split and dry a cubic meter (as long as I can get the wood easily/cheaply). I think if you want to sell all year round increase your storage area and stockpile more.
  24. I have a 390 and found that I go to clean the air filter and there's hardly anything there to clean! On the 880 there is this problem though and it has already been discussed before in length. But fitting all the additional foam inserts etc I found seemed to suck a bit of power from the saw. I like the look of the air filters on the new MS261 http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/18026-ms-261-reveiw.html I bit they keep all the dust out.
