  1. Where in the world are you? we have a rephotographs 500 (paper trace not electric) happy for you to come over for a day, we are in southend on sea and ipswich. if you want ping me an email at [email protected] kev
  2. I have an observational question If Traffic management coerces are so dull, and no one learns anything, how come virtually every tree work site I see on the highway as absolutely atrocious Traffic Management?? Kev
  3. Hi Gary Im one of the trainers for the NPTC certificate, and would reccoemnd you have a lok at the following http://www.nptc.org.uk/assets/documents/7b83377c1ec6469198a9fac7198ef276.pdf thats the learner sheduel, look through and make sure you meet all the pre requisites. If you do there is a book as part of the cource but there is a wide range of differant sources for info. you will learn some basic rules and regs, you should also recive a copy of the LOLER ACOP which you can down load at the HSE web site Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) - Work equipment and machinery other great sources of info are some of the manufactures web sites, I particully like the DMM web site and the Yale, and Samson sites follow their links for tchnical info and look at the goodies Technical Bulletins Climber's Line | Custom Climbing Rope | Yale Cordage | Yale Cordage If you visit the Stign web site thay have a range of infomation on their gear. The thing about LOLER is its knowing the gear, knowing the Specs, Knowing How it will be used and understanding that its about passing a defined standard, not your standard. hope all that helps kev
  4. spot on Its quicker with a picker.......... except when it isnt lol
  5. Can I do the sensible bit...... Ive had the misfortune to give guidance and advice following server accidents that happened doig emergence call outs.......... Just remember if the tree is swinging arround in the wind, threatening the house, the insurace will cover a stay in a hotel... so dont feel you have to climb a tree in a gail. the vast majority of roads can be closed untill the wind subsides without the normal notice, so you dont have to go aloft in a tree in hte wind..... and if you are felling the tree because its dangerouse as its loose in hte ground... is it safe to climbe a dangerouse treee.......???? I await the critisum and moans but its a tree, and there is insurance, and we are but humans, and break very easily, and the safest thing is make the site safe and let the wind go be safe be sure stay alive arbocop
  6. Hi chaps and chapes's Thanks for the kind word, im glad you found the day useful, all be it the spelling in places was a little dodge, i pleased to hear we got the message across. I love doing these events, although i still try and get dirty practising what i preach, i must accept im no longer a full time climber, and its always a joy hearing how people have taken some equipment in new direction, and great to share time with people who share the same interest. Since we started these work shops, they have always been about opening peoples eyes to the stresses and strains they put in to systems, and making sure we all try and work safely, they are not about how to cut, so yep there is some science in there but its light. Thanks to the team at Fletcher Stewart we are able to show a range of great gear but the event has always been about showing a range of stuff so that people can make an informed decision. As for the cost, again we had 2 rules, Saturdays so that even the boss can slip along, and affordable. we achieve the second, in part with sponsorship from FS, also we are inbedted to Local AA aproved contractors who supply the teams to do the practical demo's, My boss who supports the event by absorbing some of my costs, so the only variable left is the venue. so, EA branch have a nice venue, with good trees, limited numbers, but ala the FC wont let them have the venue for nothing so they have a slightley higher bill to cover. thus the cost is a little more. Hope that helps, and hope to see you you some time soon Cheers all Kev Moore AKA arbocop
  7. Ditto But keep a diary speciffically for htis, keep detailed notes even on phone calls and copies of everything. the unfortunate reality of this sort of idiocy is it seems to start as chinese wispers at TO group meetings, where it becomes 'a really good idear' BUT there is not a contracting voice of reson to say WTF.... do behave. Ive worked in cntrcating and LA and know how htese things start. while whaiting for non determination a good dig arround the councils web site would be a good idear they are a host of info
  8. I agree and disagree with Tony completley LOL... thats an oxymorone i think..... These sorts of conditions are, in the most part entirley spuriouse, and as cumbersome on the officer as they are on the contractor and client. and should be cosnsined to a dark cupboard except for very rare occasions. eg. Neccessary... a prize tree, a new contractor whom the TO knows nothing... one could argue it is neccassary to ensure htat work is carried out in accordence with the aplication... Cant stop you working, very true, but can causion you that in there opinion the work you are doing is outside the aplication and thus a breach of the consent. Resnoble, well it would become unresnoble if they interfeared with your work expectations by not allowing dates... An LA i worked for had this as a standard condition, when i cut it out of the consents and locked it away there was hell to pay but it really is not on as astandard condition. However id be more worred if i were the poor guy having to write war and peice to get an aplication through, compared with that thread this is small fry. PS how are you Tony all well up country, well east any way

    Hi-viz

Orange NRGO network Rail Goat Orange (not many goats on the net work) the old BR then NR safty operationg procedures and rules require Goat orange to be worn with the neccesary number of 3m reflective stripes on legs and jaket at all times when on the network. Saturn Yellow pigment no A-17N New road street works act & old chapter 8 . Hi viserbility clothing 'will usuallly be satern yellow' and configured in acordance with apendix ............ the apendix gives you number of stripes, arms no arms etc. A number of years aago there was amove to 2 tome jaets as we were becomming yello blind. so on the HW by virtue of ra you could justify the orange but must have 3m stripes in the right places. on the railway and underground.. goat onley baaaaaaaaaaa of cource the other differance is yellow and orange are adjacent eachother on a standard color wheel
  11. Errr ummmmmm not strictley true.........but for standard chains ok but just look on the box or if you run Huski everything inc chain its a hard or soft wood setting with the roller gauge LOL. to be honest just get the kit for the chain size
  12. Ditto provided the weeds are dicotes the monocote grass will be missed
  13. STOP what have you been regesterd for?? CS31 registrations stop in less than a month. and the award takes over. you can register now and have to take the test within 2 years. if you are regeted for the new award you need to look at that sheduul as there are some significant differences. as a hint dont look at the numbers look at the name, so you may now be on the L2 award in felling trees upto 380mm. if you are planning to study befor you go on a cource find out what cource you are on cheers

  15. Prehaps if the word 'stupid' were replaced with 'nieve' the reason that the HSE managemnt regs require specific assessments for under 18 is because the ydont have the life experiance to. I salute the chap for taking on school leavers, we have 1 chap age 16 nice guy but prone to get him self in a position where he needs moore experiaced help. All part of growing and learning, education and experaince go hand in hand. i do hope the chap envolved makes a good recovery and is able to walk ok
  16. As much as it pains me to say this, the above is spot on. We are currentley in the middle of some painful desisions as a busnesss not least of all perswading staff thet the councils cut backs mean that the 45 quid we would get for doing those trees means the work has to be that value, no moor no less, and alas the cold hard truth of econo, ics is is your expenditure is greater than income you wont last as a company. The reality of working for LA's these days is the propogander of LA and the reality of what the ' run of the mill dleivery is are not always in sync.
  17. This is on ebay could be a deal to be had Haglof Electronic Clinometer | eBay
  18. Helooooooo here you go gas National Grid: Trees and vegetation near gas pipelines this is because of anode protection more than direct disturbance , got my ass chewed off many years ago when i planted a load of maluc over a gas main i did not know was there, now the TO gets his ass chewed off over the fruit dispersal.....LOL if there are no overhead lines bit pointless but any closer than 9m to <1000v or 15>1000v. then seek advise from local power company. as for the underground stuff ill look in my linesman maual and see what i can find cheers
  19. my understanding, and its been a while since i looked at it was that it was only the trunk up to the bolling/branch break ill dig out a book and have a look later cheers
  20. Ditto BUT........... both are saws made for the pro, daily use etc, both have their strengths both have their weaknesses, and both at some point will need parts........ So find your LOCAL dealer, go and chat with them see what they have in stock and see what their spare parts are like, and if they are Stilth buy a stilth, if they are huski go that route............. if they sell both follow your heart.... you know it will take you they Huski route, they were called king of saws in the 80s for a reason lol... but seriouse, see what the local dealer has, because on the day something goes pop, youll whant the part them not on an overnight lol cheers kev
  21. the end of march you may be doing the new award in Arial dismantling AKA cs 41. read the schedule, and also the hse rigging research best bits at the end as a lot of the stuff in their is based off the worst case senario expectaions and calculations..
  22. Why would a council as a tree owner be any different to any other neighbor? Just remember they belong to the council, just like any other neighbor would you climb a fence in to a next door garden? Also dont forget the foot way and grass verge and carriage way is all public highway so NRSWA rules apply cones singes tickets permissions and notifications etc. so just tip the council TO the wink and walk away....
  23. Ummm I dont even think you ca nrun on red any more. As others have said it depends on the Tax class you are paying. for MEWPS they used to come up special vehicle or occasionally tower crane. The old specal perpose was even exampt MOT as wel as O and could run red. A couple of years ago there was an greement between govenment depatment regarding the use of red hers some (limited) help Clarifying red diesel use | News | Farmers Guardian HM Revenue & Customs As for O licence, we have one on our new machine and a tacho in it, it is taxed as a lorry, and thus only some of us can drive it (>3.5t) My advice would be cheak with vosa, and hmrc as the last thing you whant is to get stung with finmes and back payments ( if you get done for red not whiteDERV they can estimate lost revine and chare plus interest.......) hpe it helps cheers
  24. Yes and have been for 25 years
  25. I found this thread quite interesting and also nostalgic. Ive been doing this work now for just a few months short of 30 years..... and there have been many things that have happened in that time, but a couple of those that affected chainsaws, two strokes, and top handles. What it is easy to forget is that not only had there been a huge number of accidents relating to the use of saws in trees, but the HSE were getting nervous as there was research showing that top handled where intrinsically more dangerous than rear, Because of this there were moves afoot in government circles to ban the sale of top handled saws and their import into the UK. If this had happened it is obvious that things now would be completely different, the bodies representing arb, and the manufactures got hold of the then DTI and literally with days to go before the vote to ban them a deal was struck. The deal was all top handled saws in the uk sold should only be sold to people who had the NPTC cert, or students who signed a declaration, a reputable company where proof had been received that staff were compliant, no matter what all were supplied with a top handled saw safety leaflet (still got one some were LOL),, now that carried on for many years, and memories ares hort, government bodies change, and it seems the old, industry manufacturer and government deal has rather gon by the way side. another one of those things. As for experience vs tickets well lets say experience and training, one with out the other is tough and fraught with danger, but dont forget training can be both formal and informal. not sure if that helps at all but a little bit of context is always fun kevin aka Arbocop
