  1. Just a quick question Now as many of you may know im quite dyslexic and most of the tree places I have worked there have seemed to be a greater number than average of people who have similar issues. I was wondering how many peolpe who you work with suffer a similar issue. If you would be kind enough to let me know that would be great. Plese let me know number as a fraction ie if one person you work with is dyslexic but you have 10 staff its 1 in 10 thanks loads in advance. kev aka arbocop
  2. Err may be not.... if he has got the blue book only, and did not send it in to claim his qualification the nptc stance would now be he does not hold the qualification, even though he took the test he never claimed it..... Now it would be a hard Judge if it got questioned to throw that at him but one could argy he is not actually qualified as the book was mealy a means of claiming the qualification. NPTC stopped hounoring the old blue book quals just over 4 years ago as it was over 10 years since tey had stopped, so even if he had done the quals, and claimed the certs there are certain quals he could not move on to eg cs32. As for why update training is required, it is a Recommendation of the hse to revise every 3-5 years, the value of this depends heavily on your instructor and the breifing you give them prior to the training. of course in stead of going over the same stuff up skilling is also refresher eg going from small to med trees, or adding pruning to your arial quals. So the long and short of your mate is if he has not used a saw for years I would suggest he did some update training to get back in the saddle, he may also fuind technically he is not actually qualified at all. From the employers point of view if they are happy they may let him proceed but if seriousness incident occurred serious questions may be asked kev
  3. The 540 t is an awsome saw.... the stil was but is at present just ok (but we al lknow given enough time thell iron out the issues) But i stil lhave on my training fleet a Echo (NOT efco) that is small light and does small braches just fine, it is a lot slower reving and less power than the 201 and 540 and if you try and do anything big with it youl be swearing. But with the saws you will get what you pay for, and if its for part time small work, the echo is just fine but really save up and buy a 540 lol kev
  4. Take a breath and count to 10 in one weekend ive seen that, council carpenters with tennen saws, log merchants et al, just realise any one can risk their staffs life, but a gentleman protects their staff and breath out now swear ........ kev
  5. Just like boots heads are all different shapes, so try a range on, June not too far away and the arb show looms. And the current best practise for climbing is a mountaineering style lid, so the tried and tested huski/balance lid with a chin strap would no longer be appropriate. cheers ps i wear a Stine
  6. Ditto to all of the above, but get on a cource used to be called cs41, now known as areal tree cutting - rigging, lots to learn.
  7. Dear all thanks very much for your answers very interesting kev
  8. If you dont get in touch with him let me know, as i will be seeing a guy who he works with in a couple of weeks nad will pass a message on . cheers
  9. Carple Tunnel in left hand made it very difficult to grip things like plate and very very painful. Got phisio, exercises and some painful injections and bobs your auntie, I avoided the need to go under the knife.
  10. MEWP = Mobile Elevating Work Platform AKA Cherry Picker, AKA personnel Hoist AKA Bucket Truck Cheers
  11. Hi All I know you are all very busy at the moment but would be really grateful if you would help me out. Ive been asked to do a presentation and i need some really rough info to make a discussion point. So if you could fill out my poll that would be great. Cheers Kev
  12. Close ESSEX....... And beyohnd...
  13. For my money the training is almost more worhtwile than the assessmnet.Any assessment can oly cheak a range of skills not all of them, and a cource will always cover things not on the assessmnet. Having said that I also belive that if u have experiance with out training or training with out experiance you cannot fully apriciate the full range of skills, so do both. The advice about get the sheduel book the test and see how you get on is the best way forward.
  14. No matter what you do you must never underestimate, the publics ability to be selfish to the max
  15. LOL intereting point you raise, but I have analternative point of view, namley ..... Its thick skinned people like me that have been doing the job for over 30 years, have seen too many accidents and investigated too many arguments, disputes and squabbles that have ended in tears, blood or death all, usually over seamingley 'minor' or 'stupid' things like, cones a culture of creating a safe work site that keep the debate going.
  16. I hate doing 5837 surveys, I know how they always end, the developer no matter how big or small, no matter there green credentials , always need to maximize their profit eg number/size of units. Fom the planners point of view, they are under more pressure and less staff than ever before and the likelihood of having the time to catch them is very slim, and as a consultant your durty is to your client, so no matter what you advise them in line with your breif. Thats why training, and doing the work is in many ways so much less of a strain on the moral compass compared with consultancy
  17. No singes, no cones, no appropriate traffic management of any sort the only 2 surprises are that the chipper was not nicked, and the HA enforcement have not slapped a nice heathy fine on you..
  18. I rather like steves point 'tree climer' or tree cutter, cover the practical side of it. Strangely I have a hatred of the term consultant, and profer advisor, but my card says Consultant and advisor. As for the spelling thing, as i said way back on pag 2 most of us cant spell anyway lol kev
  19. But its a corruption of latin LOL
  20. "Arboricultralist" or 'GP for trees" Here's a question though, Do you think there is a difference Between Tree Surgeon/Tree cutter, Arboricultralist? I do, In the same way a great surgeon will have very limited knowledge about issues out side their specialism, a GP has knowledge about a broad range of matters. When I taught at the london school of arb I always defined an arboricultralsit as.... " a person who cares for trees, and large woody shrubs from seed through senescence and death where the main aim is one of amenity." Not perfect I know, but i know many grate tree surgeons who are not IMHO arboricultralists as they lack the range of skills.... Discuss......... PS one thing is for sure most of us cant spell for toffee Kev
  21. I saw this and it really made me smile Two tree surgeons rescued after trying to drive through 7ft-deep flood | Mail Online Kev
  22. 2500 wow OK layland have a lot of branch but thats a lot of money. As for who pays, basic legal convention, you are responcible for what you keep on your land. there are defenses and act of god is one, this however is one of htoes cases she should go to the council, Housing `Act if shes a tenent the EHo housing can force certain issues, if its near a highway s154b of the HW act 1980, or failing that s23 misc provs 76. where theres will and knowlege theres a way lol
  23. I completely understand the points made regarding what we are paid to do, ive spent 30 years learning to be an arboricultralist, a mix of so many disaplines including tree surgury, nursary practice, horticulture etc (but clearly not spelling lol). I also understand the issues of al lthe kit we use and how it impacts on the environment, the point i was trying to make , whic I acctually think tree equip summed up very nicley at the very end when he said "just not sexy" Why do we not put as much effort in to persuading replanting as we do persuading all the other things??? if you think about the pages and pages on her debating if wood chip is waste, compared with the decided lack of 'guess what tree i planted' I feel that gives a fair barometer to my point....... kev
  24. This is probable one of the most disappointing parts of this post. when you read through arb talk its full of things about the remoal of 'big trees' 'the big climb' the big fell, but when I look for , a great planting scheme, a real treat of raer tree planting etc, I find almost 0. For an industry that goes to great pains to shout its green credentials, It is, IMHO very disappointing that the same peole willing to fight tooth and nail to get the fell, do not put as much effort in to getting the replant, even when its a legal obligation. A moral question........
  25. Nope and yes, if felled under an exemption, you are obliged to replant and also the replacement is automatically the subject of the original order. As to the exception question, As i remember it, due to the structure of the legislation it is one of those 'reverse burden of proof' thus guilty until proven innocent, thus reg 14 makes you tell the lpa (5 days). If you are convinced it is dangerous you must keep enough information to prove it As for what if there are bats in the tree thats a whole other question, as every day probebly all of us that work on trees break the law.
