  1. Perhaps one of the bogies of the lead wagon was also on the weighbridge. 100t loaded wagon have 50t on each bogie, so 50t + e.g. 125T loco = 185t freightliner Class 66 Locomotive freightliner HHA wagon
  2. Unless it is pulled by a steam train then it wont be 185t loco, the main freight locos are all under 128t (class 59, class 66, class 67) The weight’s are listed on all loco & wagons on the side with there TOPS code (HHA, HTA, etc) & number If it was diesel-electric for it to be 185t they would have to be yank locos like the SD70, SD75, SD80, SD90, Dash-9, AC4400 or AC6000 etc which are all to big for the UK rail network loading gauge (width/hight) No not a train spotter & never have been.
  3. ah you ment railway wagons! look like freightliner HHA hopper wagons to me, they are normaly pulled by EMD jt42cwr (class 66) if it were EWS they would be HTA hopper wagons though still normaly pulled with class 66's
  4. Have you got a remote or a mound to sit on as you wont be able to see over the side otherwise! There must be some right idiots there if the can overload 5 lorries by 60t

  6. you think you have problems, I only have a 26" inside leg & i am 5' 9" the only thing i could ware are leggings of which Stihl were the only ones that would fit. surely ill-fitting chainsaw trouser that are to long or don’t fit well because the person is a "non-standard" shape from average would cause more hazard to safety than the allowance of leggings that fit + reduce heat stress, trip hazed etc.
  7. if its big stuff you need lifting then timing will be critical, as most heavy lift helicopters head south in early summer for the fire season around southern/south east Europe Ericsson air crane (USA) who now make the S-64 Air-Crane, they also have some in the EU most of the year - its also Ericsson who do logging etc - you are bound to have seen there S-64's in orange with a big numbers on the side & there distinctive shape on news footage of forest firs around the EU

  10. at £1380 per hour inc VAT / £5.73 per hour (national minimum wage >22) = 240 people per hour, if they can walk 2mph & can carry 20kg they will move 4800kg 2 miles in 1 hour. with 240 people you could easaly get a trailed chipper most places. also 240 people would have more pilling power than most heli's and you would still save £4.80 per hour

Its all well and good BUT it would be interesting to know what the nose weight is on the towing hitch with the trailer unloaded & the crane in its transport position, as the 2 sections of the arm would almost counteract them selves when folded back on them selves along the length of the trailer but the base & kingpost + extra chassis steel-work would put 50% of its mass on the tow hitch & the rotor & grab ~30% of its mass, if the nose weight was >150kg then even land rovers couldn’t tow it so it would only be of use to tow behind trucks above ~5t. (there are very few 4x4 that can tow 3.5t with a nose weight above 120kg) also why is it seemingly OK depict it on the back of a something that can probably only tow 2700kg MAM when it’s a 3500kg MAM trailer?

    the 208hp would depend on how much % power loss you attribute between flywheel and road wheels thus your WHP on the dyno, the drive-train in the Land Rover is not as inefficient as they would have you believe its very easy to fudge dyno results or use flexible HP standards to ones advantage.
  15. Skill ware? Skill as a driver would be to ballast the tractor correctly, guess the correct size load, drive safely & efficiently with no damage

Have been in business since the age of 16, some 22 years later its still going & provides a modest income leaving me with plenty of time on my hands to work for other people if i want, which is why I have also been self employed since I was 18. Did a stint in arb between 90 & 98 when I decided to get out of it as to many people started doing it for quick cash. Have been back in arb the past 3 months full time for a friend doing everything but use a saw, feed a chipper or have to sit in an office!

You should remember the law uses KG as in 3500kg, tonnes as in 3.5t metric (1t = 1000kg) & long tons being rounded to the nearest 10kg so ~1016kg = 1 ton This is why the law for some vehicles is 3550kg being 3.5 ton (age related) Or why weight limits for trailers behind e.g. tractors can be no more than 18290kg or 18 ton & why the GTW of a tractor is 24390kg or 24 ton, the same method is use for most HGV weights of using long tones rounded up/down for the most part but not always. tonne = 1000kg metric tonne or 1t ton = 1016kg long ton or 1 ton

It may have been 3 times annual profit, but you cannot apply that now due to the shift & predicted climate over the next 3 years, as it is now the only contracts on-going will have value, ware as past performance in the domestic market will have far less value as it in decline with no imposed contractual loyalty, likewise with expecting work from national building companies etc based on past performance. Also over time the cost of machinery will fall disproportional to prior years as there will be more machinery on the market & fewer buyers as more people sell-up or go into administration.

I would be tempted to stay in the forces for another year then make the same decision/ask the same question, as it will give time for a clearer picture of the recession to emerge & some company’s fall by the wayside. The arb industry for the past >7 years has had far more people servicing it than it requires & I am not on about fly-by-nights/gypsies/etc & there are less trees now, easy credit over the years has helped support this but if you observe all the people on hear down-sizing covertly & all the smoke & mirrors as to the why’s & what-for’s it paints a different picture & will lead to a surplice of skilled time-served employees & surplice equipment & it will be mainly the middle order company’s that go under. The current & foreseeable work climate in most industry’s is only going to get worse so the only average people who will find work easily are “generalists” who are able to turn there hand to anything/more things so are attractive to more employers. If I was in your position & wanted to get into arb BUT still have something that is of use in other trades BUT would give you something besides what most people in arb have then I would 1: obtained your licence (civilian) for piloting small boats on lakes/rivers (Royal Marines have boats don’t they!) 2: get secondment to a logistics/transport core to obtained HGV driving experience & your civilian licence + certification for operation of lorry mounted cranes. 3: get secondment to the Royal engineers to obtained digger driving experience (360 +180 loaders) & your civilian licence You could probably do the above covertly without even digging in to any “training grants and resettlement courses” if you just said you fancied a change within the army to rejuvenate the whole experience for you.
