  1. If you mean am I in favour of immigration? Not so much. What if when our country, way back when before it had developed, had lost all its best, go getting people to some other more advanced nation? Would we still be living in caves? have overthrown the tyranny our ancestors lived under? Better people stay put and improve their own countries, maybe with help from other more advanced nations.
  2. OK, should have said "some of the people" I feel bad for the homeless.
  3. I believe it is. There is only ever a finite amount of anything (except maybe love ?) the more of us there are the harder it is to get stuff. People go on about immigrants increasing GDP, sure but a bigger pie is no good if you get a smaller piece of said pie. Business wants as much cheap labour as they can get, landlords don't care if people live 20 to a house if it lines their pocket.
  4. OK I'll let you off at 65, but I intend to still be doing the big stuff at that age, time will tell, get back to me in 15 years ? As for 100's of K, how many teams do you have? I've been at it for 25+years, reckon I'm only in my 10's of K at best, don't reckon I'll ever get into 100's of K, thats a pretty big number
  5. I'm always surprised that the same people who feel bad for the homeless are all in favour of unlimited immigration, they seem unable to see the irony.
  6. Money is of corse illusory, its pretty much a religion, which only works if enough people keep the faith, but its incredibly useful. Barter is great if you and the other party both have what each other need and they are both of equal value, but thats rarely going to be the case, plus its real tricky to save with barter.
  7. Was the spinning missile from the poorly stacked land pile not an issue for the "bit of pottery an some stone things"?
  8. But you can fell the stem? Hehe, you crack me up Mark ? Also how old are you? I hope at least 50 or better still 60?
  9. I will never understand the mentally of the way some people work. Why fanny about with lowering blocks etc, he could so easily have just gone higher and cut-n-chucked it in fraction of the time. But hey its a free country, each to their own.
  10. Pretty sure there is no cure for some level of poverty, the avoidance of it is the motivating factor for virtually all human advancement. Even Jesus allegedly said we would always have the poor. All the ideological movements aimed at elevating poverty, Marxism, Maoism, etc led to mass murder of unimaginable scale.
  11. Plus charities are excellent at wasting money and giving many of those involved very well payed jobs or cushy lifestyles, IME. I'd sooner cut out the middle men.
  12. I'm not saying its right, I'm saying judging people motives in such a way is out of order, IMO.
  13. If you see a homeless girl is it wrong to give them some cash, in the hope it may help them in the short term? Describing such people as " feeling self-satisfied" is unfair. I want to help if I can, what options do I have, other than giving them some cash or buying them some food? Are those who simply walk by pretending not to see them somehow better people?
  14. Thats a pretty low thing to say, IMO.
  15. Life is to short for this sort of crap, you to change things or move on, IMO.
  16. Need to plan for it being cold well into May. Often its not, but sometimes it is.
  17. Who led you to believe that?
  18. How come the blood had not been washed off by rain in 3 years? ??
  19. More than 20 years ago as a young green climber, I was climbing for a very experienced hardwood faller. I was going to whack off a huge limb, my saw was sharp and I thought I knew my stuff having done a fair few good sized trees before. He hollered up at me to get out on the end and "get some weight off!" Which I duly did. At brew time he told me the tale of two brothers who where timber merchants like himself. They did there own climbing and where pretty experienced, but climbing then was nothing like it is today. They were removing a large Beech. One bother was up the tree dismantling it. He removed a huge limb. It exploded as he cut it and dropped. The tips hit the ground and the smashed and splintered butt end came back up and harpooned him against the tree. The fire brigade came, but could not retrieve the body, so his brother had to climb the tree and cut his dead siblings body free. He advised me to always have at least twice the length of the piece your cutting between you and the ground. Following his advice got me further out and up higher, I would argue made me a much better climber. Have I continued to live by this rule? No, but I only go bigger when I KNOW I can safely due to my experience (I'm pretty sure Geof knew I would find my own safe limits with time) I would only ever advocate his advice to anyone, because I know its safe, even if you cock up.
