  1. I've never used one but I'm sure it will be ok. The chain speed is sub 20ms but most saws are at that displacement. Make sure you see if he prefers the feel of a Stihl. I think we've reached the point where a saw costs what it costs but echo and Makita make a solid saw too. Maybe you will get more for your money?
  2. Try a 545 which is the semi pro version of the 550 lacks the rev boost but it is a little more controllable for the newbie. I do a lot of training and many people turn up with two much saw for them. If he is going to go into full time cutting then maybe a 550 is a way to go but spend the extra for the heated handles.
  3. Anybody near you do hire of a bsc flail mower. It's about 1m wide and will make your life so much easier.
  4. Have you tried getting a quote for loose? Makes a big difference. Do you have to have MOT would concrete crush do?
  5. I think it is in the blue book or the green book has a volume to weight conversion table based on species. I'll try and find it
  6. Seem to be between 50 and 80.for what is available at the moment. Biomass boom and supply I'm betting supply issues. Expect another 20 to 30 depending on the crane now.
  7. What sort of size chipper are you thinking? Dedicated mechanical feed chipper Ie crane feed only or a machine you can hand feed too? Do you intend to mount the crane on the chipper or to the tractor. Big difference in cost between the two I'd imagine you would be looking for 150 quid an hour. On the estate where I use to work we had a 12" bandit on the back of a 100hp tractor. Even if we had Jake mounted a crane and weighted the front there is no way I'd if wanted to take it far from the yard as it would not have handled well on the road. What tractor are you thinking of using?
  8. Do you already have the tractor and just adding the crane and chipper?
  9. All electric system. I've got low pressure pilot line on the side arm flail but it's not as good as all electric but miles better than a cable.
  10. It will be expensive. Talk to jas p Wilson. We changed from a piano leaver set up to 2 joysticks on the valve block then later upgraded again to the servo joystick on a new trailer.
  11. Another vote for rtech welders.
  12. JCB Hp grease. It's an ep2 lithium grease. It's also blue so it shows up nicely.
  13. Have you tried using different rods? 7018 rods leave a lovely finish but they are really hard to get going.
  14. Bent a set of qfit tines. Valtra trailer plug cover broke and the one with the fancy connector that just quick fits is on back order. JD6155 pickup hitch push back tube welds cracked and needed replacing. Valtra's water pump went but thanks to being cold it was a quick spot so hopefully no big damage. Oh and Friday morning the telehandler pump feed split. FML.
  15. It's very very loud though isn't it. Obnoxiously loud.
  16. They are well worth having. I've cracked a few moving big bits with one. Nothing some welding didn't sort out I use to have a set of euro brackets pallet forks with that I had 2 long pallet times on and 2 short pallet times with one of those beaks in the middle. Was the best grab ever for moving brash. That was until I put a second one on. I also had a albutt log grab that was great on timber with 2 grabs on it. That was better on timber but not as good on brash. Like everything in tree work you want be both.
  17. How much horsepower are you going to put through it? TP chippers are solid as are the bandits. Use to run a bandit 150xp on a 90hp valtra.
  18. Ouch. I.got a fair few at the 15 quid mark..25 quid for 5 litres is a rip off
  19. If you want 5l containers then Screwfix are good with the Oregon chain oil. Most stores have at least one in stock all the time. Personally Ive been using the husky chain oil in the 20l can. It has a little vent in the can that makes pouring easy. If you want bio oil then you can't beat Clark's bio tack
  20. Local councils use the 1990 environmental protection act. As long as you are between 8.00 and 6 8 and 1 on a Saturday and nothing on Bank Holiday and Sundays the same as construction you should be fine. As this matter will be dealt with by the council the chances of anything happening is very low. They will argue between it being a environmental health issue and a trading standards issue.
  21. Fell trees over 380mm with at least one over 500ish mil. Cuts suitable to the tree so standard fell, dogs tooth safe corner. Letterbox cut for the bigger trees. Then hang a tree up. Get it down with a winch.
  22. Both are different saws. The 500i is nearly 10cc bigger in displacement hence the need for extra fuel. Plus side of the 500 is the power and that it is constant. The downside of this is if you fell low the exhaust pressure throws all the dirt off the floor. Some of the plastics are a bit fragile. Broke the air filter cover in a week. The 500 will pull a much bigger bar than it says. No issue with a 36 inch bar, not sure if the 572 would do the same. I spent my money on a 572 and I have an 18 20 and 24 inch bar for it. It is currently my go to saw. The vibration is higher than a 500i but not that noticeable. It's more lively than the 576 and quicker in the cut than the 372. Performance wise its close to the 462 but with better handling. I think the 462 and 572 are great forestry saws and the 500i is an amazing arb saw as it replaces so many saws.
  23. A standard stihl auto stop nozzel from their combi can fits the motomix. Which is nice as I need to get a new nozzel for my husky power 2 as the husky combi ones don't fit. Good on stihl for making it all fit.
  24. This is what I use as personal kit. We have a large first aid kit with extra large bandages and a Stein medium bleed kit all in a parabag with a few other things in there too on the landing.
  25. Depends on what you mean by easy. If it is the clutch pack then you will need to split the tractor. Worth getting an ag engineer to have a look at it. Do you use a driven trailer behind it. I've seen a few valtra g diffs wrecked by being over driven by the trailer drive.
