  1. I personally would not use Beech for anything structural. For internal joinery work it is very good. Just be aware that it tends to shrink a fair amount in the drying process.
  2. Anything as long as it meets the right grade. Some woods are structurally stronger than others. A Horse Chestnut beam isn't going to be much cop where as an Oak one will be great. Personally I've only ever Oak and Larch that were then later stress graded for use in construction. I've seen Douglas Fir and Sitka done in similar fashion. I have seen a nice Cricket Pavilion which had all the roof trusses made of Ash. I don't know if they were just cut to size or stress graded.
  3. Are you trying to work out a volume of timber in the plantation. And then from that apply for the felling license? Lots of maths and steps to get to the end point really. But really you need to work out a basal area to work out a standing volume per ha. Or you could measure every tree in some set size blocks and use tariff tables.
  4. Interesting. Forest boot repair is £49 i shall send a picture of mine to them and see if they can fix them. Again another pair of boots coming apart at at the sole.
  5. King William Pine?
  6. Sorry for the quality of the sample its a little old now. It's from Penn wood if anybody know it. Apparently the bark looked 'Welingtonia like'. Not seen anything like it before myself but Silver Firs or Hemlocks jump to mind. Can;t find anything close in my books so I thought I'd ask. Any takers?
  7. Dont forget your traffic light system now and all your FISA approved training. In final crop especially with a big harvester working 18hours a day you'll probally need 2 350k forwarders to keep up.
  8. Economies of scale really. 1 harvester 100t plus a day. It can work 24 hours a day if you put 2 or 3 drivers in it. Hand cutters on average 10-15 tonne a day can only work 10 hours a day. Harvesters only work on certain sites. If you look at the contracts with FC Scotland and Wales the volumes are massive.
  9. The Valtra harvester and the electro hydraulic botex crane. Two of my favorites. The EH upgrade it 2k on a new trailer or around 4-5 for a refit. Money well spent really.
  10. It was about 3 hours back to herts!
  11. 2013 model 1 brake band and a warranty job on the carb. The brake band only went from left hand abuse.
  12. Had BFG AT2s on it but i don't think they do the right size for navara anymore. I now use Cooper Discoverer AT3. They're about 100 quid each them seem ok Done about 5k on mine now.
  13. Do you frequent the Little Gad shop in the mornings?
  14. You just need a more substantial bracket because the blocks weigh so much. On the plus side you can mount it further back as you dont need as much movement to operate everything.
  15. It was the absolute downpour at the time i went past Timber wolf so it maybe why i missed it.
  16. It bucketed it down from about 9-11. The car park is in very good shape though. Trust me the car park is full of Landys with winches on so getting stuck isn't an issue.
  17. I totally missed that:blushing:. Maybe for 2016 you can get a 8m and some sunshine.
  18. Can you pm me a price on the tree jacks please. Think i'd be after the small one or the next one up.
  19. Its not an 8 leaver is it?
  20. One of the lads had one that did 2 months before the crank bearings started to go.... Then after 4 months my 550s carb went so swings and roundabouts really. I've never really been a fan of the 026 260 or 261 and i'm pretty sure the MS 262 and i wont get along. I want to get a Dolmar next....
  21. 550 isn't lagging that far behind.
  22. Was it you who game to look at the forwarder at Ashridge after seeing it at Browns?
  23. Looks like a nice mess to work in. Like your little grapple digger. I've become partial to doing windblow with the crane and grapple over a winch.
  24. I don't think so. Are they based over on the old airfield?
