  1. would be fun with my 2720 dont mention the 699:thumbdown: swan vesta candidate
  2. Its what father in law wanted, its good for getting in around stock buildings when feeding in winter, plus we have several larger 4x4 tractors for jobs that require then anyway
  3. first you need to invest in a load of big shiney kit this has been my ride recently
  4. the tiny tachs do have a good reputation
  5. for reference http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/9008-tachometer.html if your running newer style saws you will need something like the edt7 from stihl
  6. sorry are you wanting a herbicide or a persistant soil based poison?
  7. yep but you try and get the yorkshire office to come south into the humber area! not happening
  8. Only just spotted this thread, FC are on a recruitment freeze as are NE, any unallocated funding within the conservation sector has been clawed back, environmental jobs have dropped about 20% in salary, just looked at a few project managers posts and they are less than what i was on when i started in the conservation sector 5years ago as an assistant Roaches are going as part of the 20% reduction in the national parks funding as the Eastern moors went about 18months ago, and these big estates are a big drain on resources, its costing £10k's just to maintain the footpaths on these sites. Its not looking good for the wife having a job after her maternity finishes, FC locally up here wont leave the office, and all the funding seems to be going to sites within 30mins of the office, so those of us near two hours away dont seem to stand a chance, I think April the cut backs will really cut in seriously, and thats when we will see the real mess we are in, I mean you know the amount of work i have lined up only to get shafted about my the funding bodies, trying to get FC out to Nicks still, about to submit this woodland creation grant application for 20acres and they wont come out to discuss it and the mangement plans for the remaining site, which isnt very helpful.
  9. I started with a husky 340, then got a 372 for the bigger stuff, so if your only using it occasionally i would say a 365 would be fine, my 372 runs a 24" bar most the time so i guess the 365 would pull a 20" bar ok, it wont be fast but it will do the job
  10. my two favourites: Eagles may soar, but weasels dont get sucked into jet engines! The early bird may get the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese,
  11. it will be cheapest if you find either a haulage firm near where you purchase it from, and if its not in a hurry to get it they can try and fit it with a return load, the last few i have moved and had quotes for have been abou £250-300 for about 160miles maybe worth trying Des Fry transport as he will pass the load onto another haulier if someones heading to you area
  12. woodland condition survey? whats that about then? I have done several woodland management plans, but not come across a condition survey FC have a load of the standard format examples for their mgmt plans on their website, in the grants section, but you really need to know what to put in them, including everything from protected species, archeological info, the owners management objectives, all planned management operations need to be included, are you getting a FC management planning grant for doing the work?
  13. i end up doing a couple of days a week controlling the stuff through summer into october, if you only have a few plants, pull them up as they only root a few inches deep, got a school group out on friday helping me, then two days next week with angling clubs, then the national park rangers the week after that, and hopefully we will start to control the stuff, but it grows so well, and the bee keepers love it anyway im diverting your thread so i will stop
  14. definatly not loving the last one (the plant not the picture ) going to like it even less tomorrow evening after 7hrs on a clearing saw scrubing out an overgrown ditch to control the blooming stuff,
  15. I have an FS420 (the older version of the FS550) paid £38 of ebay, spent £70 getting the gear box repaired and its an absolute animal of a machine, empties a tank in about 25mins, by which time you need a break from it anyway, but i wouldnt change it for scrub clearance, awesome tool
  16. you recon! i have my work insurance, house, and machinery with nfu, but not woodland cover!
  17. rural arbor products Rural Arbor Products Ltd
  18. Er, 99.9% of people will call that bulrush but it is infact reedmace (typha), not bulrush its an invasive wetland plant, but will only tollerate shallow water so generally only invades the margins. Bulrush - Typha latifolia - Natural England not sure why NE are starting to refer to it as bulrush either, as thats very bad practise
  19. the links not working steve? where should i direct my sowing machine based queries now
  20. just out of interest, whats the top speed on an mb Trac 800, am i right in thinking 40kph?
  21. do you in anyway think it would benefit the industry? or ultimately do you think end price will dictates sales, rather than having a HETAS assurance on your products, i can see this being more or an issue in supply of chips/briquettes than in logs really, but im interested as it seems odd to try and set up an assurance scheme for logs,
  22. HETAS have introduced/introducing an assurance scheme for solid fuel biomass, including in its remit is logs (oh my goodness, surely not, logs a biomass fuel what ever next ) Solid Biomass Assurance Scheme link to the pdf spec for logs http://www.hetas.co.uk/pdfs/log%20-%20prod%20def.pdf so whats everyones views, good that there is someone trying to teach people about the benefits of decent logs, or a waste of time? interested that they have a specific length of 25cm so if you sell 30cm logs you dont qualify interested in views like is should all be split no branch wood, probably not a problem for the firewood processor guys but not ideal for those of us that have sold smaller loads from felled field trees and also i suspect arb waste from smaller firms, without bigger chippers. anyway it looks like the scheme is still under review and it would probably be worth some of the larger firewood producers on here having a review and commenting to HETAS
  23. these legs going to be removable so you can take them off when the mill has to pass them?
  24. there is an elevator on ebay that may be of useStanley Logger Processor Log Spliter Elevator Forestry on eBay (end time 28-Jun-10 21:29:31 BST)
  25. they could well be weak internally, i have felled trees with extensive squirrel damage to them (sycamore seems to be a favourite round here) and the tops and limbs can quite often snap out when felling, so you have to be aware and keep looking up when felling, i wouldnt fancy putting any weight onto the limb in your second picture,
