  1. Other than the usual forest op's etc, if your worried about public access make up a sign yourself in A4 and get it laminated explaining stumps have been treated and use a barrier tape (i prefer red and white, as i think the yellow and black looks like a police barrier ) to exclude people for a week after application,
  2. whats the travel like to over there? where is closest airport, etc or is there going to be an arbtalk bus? surely someone on here has a bus drivers license
  3. but it has a replaceable battery! :001_tt2:
  4. thats ace, and so applicable as an htc user trying to explain to people that iphones are not that great
  5. seriously look at getting yourself down to one of cheffins auctions at cambridge machinery sales, they have several 100's of tractors from nearly brand new to stuff 30yrs old and on its last legs, take someone with you who knows a bit about tractors but you should easily pick up something in budget, We have had kit from there and as long as you know what your looking for you'll get sorted, normally the little case tractors of about 85hp 4x4 with a loader should be within your budget
  6. so what do you actually use these for that you cant use tongs or a cant hook for? is it just dragging lengths of timber about easily, i have looked at them in the past and just cant seen to find a use for them that there isnt already a tool for
  7. i love signal crayfish, very tasty but tricky to get trapping licenses round here unless your work on river conservation i normally get a load in mid summer from some of the river keepers i work with, but other than that most the ones i get go off to cefas for research. we made some elderflower champagne, its lovely stuff the wife normally makes a load only problem is keep remembering to release the pressure in the bottles every week, scared me half to death a few times this summer as bottle tops got blown off during the evening I have just pressed our first two litres of apple juice of the year, and got some pears coming this afternoon to press as well I really want to get into growing some fungi next year, Im guessing some plugs in some fresh cut birch and oak would be best, as im after oyster, shiitakes and some chicken of the woods,
  8. hmmm im really seriously tempted, could buy loads of sensibly priced atv kit, rather than the stupidly over inflated prices over here
  9. get your hands on them and see how they feel to use in your hands i have a 372xp, but dont like the feel of the 576
  10. the 66cc version got a pretty good review in this months forestry Journal and the 80cc one is only marginally heavier, outsides are similar to Dolmar/Makita but the internals are different
  11. so basically they will spend a load of money, shuffling paper round these offices, change peoples job titles, and basically it will probably cost a load of money for the tax payer, and what will it actually achieve? probably nothing, I for one was really hoping for a merger of FC and NE as it would make work so much easier dealing with one body
  12. drop member LGPeddie on here a pm, he runs a specialist kubota with a tilt rotator head on it, very versatile, and knowledgable on plant equipment, if you dont get a response im seeing him on friday so will tell him to check on here and post his thoughts
  13. Cheers David, just trying to sort enough firewood to keep the house warm enough for the little one over winter so hence the interest in processing timber easier, that and a bit of shoulder pain when using the axe for long periods now
  14. is that a chainsaw type with a automatic splitter
  15. what processor is that through David?
  16. i still use an axe for snedding smaller limbs, when im felling on certain jobs, dont see it being a problem for smaller diameter stuff like 4" i dont see it as any more dangerous that a chainsaw being used without correct training
  17. there was a trail FC/NE woodland creation project in yorkshire i think in an effort to mitigate flood risk, cant remember the project name but if i can find the link i will post it also not sure if Staffs wildlife trust have done anything in their farming floodplains project, they have certainly been using log jams to flood meadows etc to reduce peak flow times which is what its all about, there is quite a few case studies in canada and N america which you probably need to look at
  18. blimey putting some weight on now then! My wifes back has been bad so she cant carry Peter around so im doing most the leg work at the moment, changing cleaning etc, so i dont seem to be achieving a great deal during the days at the moment, hope her back clears up before i have to do a load of work next week, else i may have to cancel some of it
  19. woo hoo, 20days in and Peter has only been up once during the night, cant image twins being much fun at night, just as your getting one to sleep the other wakes, Lorry, who's doing the moaning in between?
  20. Just a question really, I do a fair bit of hedge laying, hedge restoration and as a result i end up with a fair bit of hawthorn timber (its a really great firewood), it makes up about 80% of my log pile, i cut most my timber to 4ft-6ft lengths so it fits on the atv trailer easily, after a few days of sawing it with the chainsaw and splitting the stuff with an axe im wondering if anyone else out there processes hawthorn and if so how you do it, i dont know how a processor would handle it as its not always perfectly straight and can be pretty knotty, would a circular saw and splitter be the best set up? Cheers
  21. in fairness i picked a fair bit of that off the roof of the defender, its a nice mobile platform to work off, only making a small bit of sloe gin as i prefer damson much nicer
  22. I shot 4 on the open morning of the season last year, so filled the freezer, havent managed to intercept any yet this year just mallards. Need a nice young one before christmas
  23. yep apples, damsons, sloes, hazel nuts, didnt pick any blackberries this time and we missed out on bilberries as well, which we normally go and pick a load for apple and bilberry crumble. Got a couple of ducks in the freezer as well, does that count?
  24. nope, sorry cant help but do you have a 590 then? sorry reason i ask is i have an as new 590 owners manual and service charts etc here in the pack supplied by a dealer when new, if you pm me your address and its of use i will post it to you
