  1. Just before christmas (the day after receiving their bonus) two of my employees didn't turn up (you know who you are). One phoned in said he was sick... the other didn't come in. When I heard they had been seen heading out the night before I was pretty annoyed... it really messes up the day. The know show was local so I went round and dragged his ass out of bed! He'd got in at 5 in the morning. Not sure he enjoyed the day much... I think he still has nightmares about me in his house. Young lads do things that are stupid, give them a chance, if they continue doing stupid things there are plenty of others out there, some who are willing to work, even if they make mistakes someti:sneaky2:mes.
  2. He's got earplugs and eye protection, not sure a helmet is required for chipping:001_smile:
  3. For £20K you being an oldie and presumably having a pre 97 licence you could get a 6 toner and a real chipper! Would need an O licence, but worth it IMO.
  4. It was a shame that all the trees were felled, but I can't say I wouldn't have done the same if I had inherited the land.. Had the planners seen the trees they would have protected them and the land would have been more difficult/expensive to develop. One of the issues with 5837 IMO is that it is easier to get rid of everything at the start rather then risk having to work around enforced protection measures..
  5. I had a call today asking me to redo a survey I had done in November last year.. A number of the trees had been removed.. I spent ages recording all the trees, what a waste of time that was. I guess the 5837 survey restricted their layout. Took them a week apparently over 60 trees, done by a farmer and demolition man.... All burnt onsite, they have upset a few neighbours.. Some lovely mature trees including, walnut, tree of heaven, zelkova, persian iron woods, japanese maples..
  6. Dig your hole till you think it is deep enough.. then dig some more because you always have to go deeper..
  7. We have hired in a big machines on big grinding jobs in the past including a 78hp carlton and they are obviously MUCH quicker then the little bandits. We have also just hired in a guy with a big grinder and found that the cost of doing that was not much different and a lot less hassle then doing it ourselves..
  8. I've run two transits in the past and currently run a landrover 130, 6 ton iveco and 3.5 ton Isuzu grafter. IMO The LR130 is too small for most arb jobs, many disagree. It can tow 3.5 ton which is good and 4x4 is invaluable if required. Turning circle is SHOCKING! Not my favourite to drive when loaded and pulling a big trailer, it will stop just. Very cramped in the cab. The 6 ton iveco is great, carries a decent load. The main issue is the driving licence, its Ok if your an old fart. You also require O licence. On you pre 97 licence you can tow 2.25 tons. The Grafter, not had long but so far impressed, it is a proper truck can tow 3.5 tons carries a load well. Lots of room but potential to overload it. Amazing turning circle! Will pull a big trailer fully loaded and stop and start, loads of space in cab. Transits are OK, easy to overload and struggle with a big trailer.
  9. They own Land Rover don't they? I have heard they are pants.. Cheap however..
  10. Am I the only one who remembers the chipper mounted on the LR 90 at the arb show a few years (8 or 9) back? I think it was a TW 150.
  11. Can't find it now but sure remember reading reduction should only be used in special circumstances.. Tree officers are definitely against it IMO..
  12. DLJ is apparently releasing his book about Tree Morphogenesis as a free download from Amazon from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day. In a few weeks time, the printed version will be available. Download now for free! For the updated printed book version and links to the e-book on Amazon, visit Tree Morphogenesis.
  13. We were reducing a hedge once and the unstable neighbour was very threatening. Full of it but still making it difficult to work. Said he was going to shoot us. Called the police and told them what ge said and they turned up pretty quick. He was talkkng bull but it enabled hs to get on with the job..
  14. Can we see you pellet manufacturing outfit..?
  15. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/arb-trucks/24186-operator-licences-again.html
  16. If a cubic m of dry chip weighs £250 kgs then a ton will be 4 cube so £140..
  17. I am not convinced bracing is useful for anything other then stopping a branch that has failed hitting the deck. Pretensioning and therefore altering the load on the tree is only going to mess up the trees natural ability to adjust over time. I have seen a number of braced trees that have failed in my opinion due to poor cable bracing.
  18. Got any photos
  19. We are getting £10 a ton. Sold 200-300 tons last year.
  20. My guys are entitled to half an hour, you can't normally get to a shop and eat your lunch in half an hour. A team of 3 wasting 20 mins a day costs the employer over £2000 in wages in a year. If it were your 2 grand Tony you might think differently..
  21. I'd be trying to get the developers to remove it. I have removed a number of trees over the years that have been adversely effected/killed by a neighbouring development. Unfortunately the trees may take a few years to die and by then the developer has long gone, and are never going to accept responsibility. The neighbour/tree owner has to pick up the cost of removing the tree killed by the developer, who has normally built against their wishes and to make things worse the new buildings that led to the damage and are under the tree, mean the removal is MUCH more difficult and costly.
  22. We're the same, every now and again, but if it becomes habit it eats into your day..
  23. We currently work 8.30 - 4.30 it's always been OK as we've been a small team and efficient at getting out of the yard quickly. We mostly work local and as most people don't like saws before 9 am it's worked well. As we've expanded I found that more guys tends to mean more faff and leaving the yard is taking longer. I am contemplating bringing in an 8 o'clock start. ) I am working out how much extra it is going to cost me in wages. It works out about £1000 a year per man.... I have 4 guys. It just reinforces my views about stopping for breakfast/to buy lunch having a tea before work... etc.. ect.
  24. We do, often. Stick a pulley above the grcs, it works brill.
  25. Our chipper was nicked without a tow hitch. The gits lifted it onto the back of a truck with a hiab... I HATE the fact that I have to spend hours every week and hundreds if not thousands of pounds securing our kit. The lengths people go to to steal stuff amazes me. If they put their minds to working I bet they could make a decent honest living...
