  1. Or do a quick search on arbtalk.. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/arb-trucks/24186-operator-licences-again.html
  2. Cheers, we don't normally head down to leicester as a rule.... It was a pain when ODPT or Hollands as it was moved from long eaton to derby.. I guess we may have to venture further afield.. 5 years ago we had 3 shops within 5 miles, now our closest is at least 40 mins away.
  3. Outdoor power tools derby has shut up shop! A right pain for us. Stihls online policy was an irritation now it is an issue! Are other local dealer in Loughborough closed a few years back. Any recommendations for stihl dealers.. The only localish firm I know about is Henton & Chattell's in Nottingham..
  4. We converted our land-cruiser into a van for tax purposes, as an additional benefit saved over £250 a year on insurance...
  5. A lot of it is just variation in pricing, you can't get them all bang on, some are high some are low.. It's the same with small jobs you might quote £230 to some ones £150. The difference is with big trees is clients are more likely to get more quotes and therefore you are more likely to win the work you have priced on the cheap side. When its a matter of tens of pounds the client is more likely to accept your quote, especially if they like you or think that's what they expected to pay. When it's hundreds they are more likely to look elsewhere until they find someone to mess up their quote on the cheap side. I've lost count of the big trees I have under-priced!! But I bet there are also loads I overpriced and some other fool got the work:)
  6. I hope that is true!

  8. Someone told me a few weeks back that they were going to make us oldies (pre 97 licence holders) take the test. I have not found any info online and not sure if it is true but I think he said something about from 2016 with 4 years to get the licence..
  9. Set your phone up as a portable hotspot and you can bluetooth your laptop to that if you really need it. Personally I'd take a shorter lunch and get home. Diary/emails and other entries can be done on the phone. Ohps didn't read penfolds post..
  10. Had a scan through some LR forums and I think you might be right..
  11. We put one of our lads though with a company in Nottingham a few months back, allot cheaper then some other firms and crammed into two days including test (which is good as an employer) Contact Us - John W Smithurst - LGV Training and Tuition - Nottingham, Derby - Tel: 0115 9327 999 John 07971164434 Plus you will be more employable to us.. Even better if you could do the C1+E..
  12. Landy made a big clunking sound on friday when reversing, it's now difficult to get into gear. Is it likely to be terminal/new gearbox...? Am I going to do more damage using it? Once in gear it seems OK. Can I struggle on for a few weeks till the holidays then get it sorted? Busy time and would rather not be without it.. I'd post on a landy forum but they tend to be a bit special...
  13. But you won't be able to post it out will you..?
  14. Have you tried the 250.. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3eEZMlbjhg]Canopy Tree Services Chipping - YouTube[/ame]
  15. We've been over this on this forum a "few" times, but 3.5 tonners and smaller are too small for every day tree work (if you want to work legally) IMO .. The land rover has it's uses as special vehicle but I would get a LOT less done if it was my main chip truck.
  16. I wouldn't want our 130 as our only truck, it's too small for a proper day. Fine for small stuff, off road stuff and towing the 3.5 ton trailer. You can physically fit more on a transit, but like all 3.5 tonners you will be overweight by elevenses of most tree jobs. If your 110 is not a hicap you will have very little legal load...
  17. Here is ours. The "original" drop side still drops down to have a full length tool box like PMH's. Roof section lifts up on hinge to aid chipping like Durham arb's.
  18. I want to see him hit a 6 inch tree by mistake...
  19. I have a Dr wheeled Trimmer, much prefer it to a handheld but it is only strimmer cord so would struggle brambles.
  20. We've been felling big ganodema infected beech over the last couple of days. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/tree-health-care/57130-ganoderma-beech.html The nursery are keeping the stump as it has some interesting inscriptions and is a nice feature. The owner was asking today if we could carve out a house with some seats for the kids. Has anyone ever done anything like that.. I reckon it's pretty solid whatever the picus says... I guess you would bore in and take out wedges. Any one want to do it give me a price.
  21. Isn't that kind of the point.. "Look those trees are knackered you can stick your building there. That one is nice avoid." Although I recently did one for house on a large plot, it had one nice Oak in one corner, with loads of space and nothing worth saving in the rest. The architect still came back with the house under the tree and asked how we could build in the RPA. "Why not put it over there, thus avoiding the issue and retaining the tree...?"
  22. Any recommendations? Is it worth getting new or are second hand reconditioned OK. We will need to have it checked/calibrated yearly I guess.
  23. I want a CAT scanner for testing before stump grinding. I know is is not going to find plastic etc.. Any recommendations, do we need a genny, is a basic one good enough?
  24. You know your a long way up when it takes a count of 3 for the branch to hit the deck.... Definitely one of the tallest trees I've taken down. Big poplar we took down. Ben Saxton did the first day I finished off!
  25. The client had the tree assessed with a picus, thought I'd share the findings..
