  1. They own Land Rover don't they? I have heard they are pants.. Cheap however..
  2. Am I the only one who remembers the chipper mounted on the LR 90 at the arb show a few years (8 or 9) back? I think it was a TW 150.
  3. Can't find it now but sure remember reading reduction should only be used in special circumstances.. Tree officers are definitely against it IMO..
  4. DLJ is apparently releasing his book about Tree Morphogenesis as a free download from Amazon from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day. In a few weeks time, the printed version will be available. Download now for free! For the updated printed book version and links to the e-book on Amazon, visit Tree Morphogenesis.
  5. We were reducing a hedge once and the unstable neighbour was very threatening. Full of it but still making it difficult to work. Said he was going to shoot us. Called the police and told them what ge said and they turned up pretty quick. He was talkkng bull but it enabled hs to get on with the job..
  6. Can we see you pellet manufacturing outfit..?
  7. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/arb-trucks/24186-operator-licences-again.html
  8. If a cubic m of dry chip weighs £250 kgs then a ton will be 4 cube so £140..
  9. I am not convinced bracing is useful for anything other then stopping a branch that has failed hitting the deck. Pretensioning and therefore altering the load on the tree is only going to mess up the trees natural ability to adjust over time. I have seen a number of braced trees that have failed in my opinion due to poor cable bracing.
  10. We are getting £10 a ton. Sold 200-300 tons last year.
  11. My guys are entitled to half an hour, you can't normally get to a shop and eat your lunch in half an hour. A team of 3 wasting 20 mins a day costs the employer over £2000 in wages in a year. If it were your 2 grand Tony you might think differently..
  12. I'd be trying to get the developers to remove it. I have removed a number of trees over the years that have been adversely effected/killed by a neighbouring development. Unfortunately the trees may take a few years to die and by then the developer has long gone, and are never going to accept responsibility. The neighbour/tree owner has to pick up the cost of removing the tree killed by the developer, who has normally built against their wishes and to make things worse the new buildings that led to the damage and are under the tree, mean the removal is MUCH more difficult and costly.
  13. We're the same, every now and again, but if it becomes habit it eats into your day..
  14. We currently work 8.30 - 4.30 it's always been OK as we've been a small team and efficient at getting out of the yard quickly. We mostly work local and as most people don't like saws before 9 am it's worked well. As we've expanded I found that more guys tends to mean more faff and leaving the yard is taking longer. I am contemplating bringing in an 8 o'clock start. ) I am working out how much extra it is going to cost me in wages. It works out about £1000 a year per man.... I have 4 guys. It just reinforces my views about stopping for breakfast/to buy lunch having a tea before work... etc.. ect.
  15. We do, often. Stick a pulley above the grcs, it works brill.
  16. Our chipper was nicked without a tow hitch. The gits lifted it onto the back of a truck with a hiab... I HATE the fact that I have to spend hours every week and hundreds if not thousands of pounds securing our kit. The lengths people go to to steal stuff amazes me. If they put their minds to working I bet they could make a decent honest living...
  17. Any solutions? Fell is not an option. Fencing off is not an option. I am thinking some type of resin based paving system but have no experience..
  18. Once you join the scheme you can stay in it until your total business income is more than £230,000.
  19. NO!! you have your brew with breakfast BEFORE work.. Get to job and get on with it stop at 11.00 (if suitable) for 15 mins again around 1.00 for 30 mins.
  20. Surely you have to pay employees from when they start work/clock in. You can't expect them to not be paid for the drive to the job site or the drive back to the yard.. It's not there fault you book work an hour and a half away.. I expect my guys to be in the yard for 830 and normally leave by 430. Price jobs/set wages accordingly. If its a long commute it is factored into the quote. As to sick pay my contracts are the same, losing 3 days pay before getting sick pay may seem mean but it cuts down on monday morning hangovers..
  21. You claim on capital items over £2000. So any big purchases you get the vat back, but not the other stuff..
  22. You can join the Flat Rate Scheme for VAT and so pay VAT as a flat rate percentage of your turnover if: Your estimated VAT taxable turnover - excluding VAT - in the next year will be £150,000 or less. Once you join the scheme you can stay in it until your total business income is more than £230,000. The Flat Rate Scheme has been working well for us. Simplifies accounting, only adds 10.5% to a domestic bill and commercial clients are charged 20% but you only pay 10.5! I think there is a calculator somewhere where you can put in your details and work out what is best for you.
  23. Stick it on ebay. We recently split some logs for an old fella who had purchased several loads.. He paid well over the odds IMO.. I am tempted to try selling our logs like that rather then bother to process it!
