Pay some one what they are worth to you but don’t start crying when they get offered better money and leave if you don’t... Whole wage thing in this industry is a joke ... apprenticeships are payed on minimum and lads are put off and leave before they reach any real potential..you have college boys and so called freelancers wanting top dollar a day and to be honest are not worth a wank... it used to be that subbie freelancers where problem solvers for the difficult jobs , the reg Coates of the tree world who had earnt the right to be there and command decent money through there years of experience but now any muppet can watch a load of hunickie and Travor u tube vids and wear that badge and demand top dollar despite turning up and more likely to and be a liability... then blame Nate.

I don’t get this love of old saws, if you have used and worked them properly from new they would not be working now... and also for all the health reasons you state which are serious in the long term , vibration damage to your hands Is a very real issue...and again as you say they are not as productive.

First arrived on Tuesday , great to watch and as predicted the midges turned up a day later... nature must have a sync ... as much as I like seeing them if it means there yearly arrival coincides with the midges they can stay away!

To the OP.... in all seriousness though I think you are going about it the right way ... think of it as training for stamina in handling Wood , the second point is you will be having the joy of watching climbers work , visualise every thing they do that works and doesn’t work so you don’t put your self in that situation... learnt more in that time than any other in my career point of view and gives you a foundation for good training afterwards. After a year of this your boss should start paying for training or think about moving on 3 years time you should be pretty far advanced with a good work discipline and a fair bit of experience if you have stuck it this far you should have a good career and will have commanded my respect just for sticking at it...

I think it takes 10 years to make a good climber that is why ... 15-20 years a very good climber and when past 25 years and it’s a kind of reverse t being the best , you know what you should be doing , still make it look easy but your body’s telling you that you can’t push it like you used too whilst slowly becoming an arthritic mess... I wish I hadn’t taken all those drugs and drank so hard now....?

If you had tickets that would cost thousands to get you would be worth £120+ a day .. but you don’t and can’t be used as such , will have to be supervised and if you follow the advice of doing one as soon as you have your tickets are a liability to the employer you have any way... personally I would of stuck labouring on a building site and got a trade there.

There is a vast difference in a set that has been sharpened in a chemical bath and balanced than a set that’s been slung on a bench grinder jig... I know what I’d rather have in my machine and a decent sharpener is going to set you back 3k. Tinny wolf gets what it’s given but I have three sets for the schliesing as you have to adjust the clearance for the anvil so it’s easier to buy 3 sets and reset every 3 sharpens.

My dad always said the customer has no idea of quality tree work , which in the case of these was shocking , but will no the difference to a clean site [emoji38]. Like riches they needed doing @ around 80ft+ and shedding whole limbs they are not worth the risk in keeping as a tree to admire , found so many surprises in rot at the base of stems it was amazing they hadn’t dropped more..., fell , top / pollard and keep Ona cycle is the only option for over mature willows I recon.

Time of year will play a big part in it too, I find felling ash now it’s at its worse.

Aye it was mate had been waiting since October to get on that Feild as it’s usually soaked so was glad to get this one out the way.. timber not stacked high so kids don’t get an avalanche on them!

Same as rich but 4 days on 4 trees ... although they where monsters ..... totally ruined these though and would of rather would of rather felled them to be honest... bloody things barbers chairing , splitting and tearing off huge strips , a horrible , volatile timber! And a mains drain under them on the Feild side but used tyres on the front stems to flop them after rigging out the backs.

I recon £45 a tonne minimum ... I would of brought all of that for £32 a tonne! I was offered £60 a tonne recently for beech. ive just been offered £40 a tonne for shite willow biomass , Some one was paying £90 a tonne standing for Sitka in keilder recently! -

If you find the regular gaffs to long you won’t like the euro gaffs... the new carbons look pretty good though.
