A client of ours is would like to commission a carving and I have offered to put the feelers out to see if anyone on here would be interested. The client is a University and the tree (a dead London Plane) is in a very prominent location. If you are interested, please let me know and I will forward your details. The client will want to see examples of past work, and is interested in some creative ideas.

Ok, thanks Dave. It's been a while since I did the Thermal Imaging course with Andrew and Marcus. I am still interested to see if it will make it in our 'toolbox' for tree assessment.

Agreed - take a look at the tips of the crown. You may be able to see where the growth curves/kinks as the tree optimizes itself. If the tips are all leaning as well then the tree has probably moved recently. Any chance of air-spading around the base to look at the suspected root damage?

We found a similar situation in Birmingham last week. They had completely defoliated every Bird Cherry in a housing estate.

Calm down! I didn't say yours was fluffy and I didn't slate you. My point is that a policy should reflect reality. If a company uses the policy you have posted here and actually adheres to it then that's great.

That's true. I guess it just seemed a bit funny talking about how non-arbs wielding chainsaws skew the statistics about H&S in our industry, but then saying that as a seasoned professional he had had multiple incidents. You're right - no point in hiding the truth. Is arb inherently dangerous though? Are you really 'lucky' if you have a career without an incident? Damn, I am on a track I didn't mean to be on now. As I previously said, I thought Ian's comments were very succinct and informative.

My advice would be to research the various areas covered by a policy and then sit down with the client and go through the realistic options for them. Any company can have a fluffy environmental policy, but does it actually mean anything? If you can, take the opportunity to implement some real change - assuming they need it that is!

Ian's a very good chap who really knows his onions. I thought his comments were on the whole very good - the comments about his mishaps and the Poplar would probably have been better left unsaid as they appeared to undo the good comments.

I would ask if you client is happy for you to discuss with the TO first - and invite the client along if you are going to meet up on site. Some clients may see discussions with the council without their input as undermining your relationship.

Good paper although a little out of date now in my opinion. The key phrase to sum up the paper has to be: "strong and vibrant future for arboriculture; focusing on tree benefits rather than the preoccupation with tree problems that has dominated the evolution of urban tree management to date". Since 2009 a lot more research in to tree benefits has happened - interestingly enough by Forest Research of the FC.
