  1. A blatant advert,, but what the hell theirs always 'my house' http://www.townendfarm.co.uk in the Nymp 12miles from whitby ask pete mctree hes been here !
  2. Andy you can charge vat if you are registering but havent yet rec'd a number you can claim back vat that you have paid on capital expenditure / kit . that you still have for upto 3 yrs + can claim 6mths vat back from the date of reg YOU cannot charge vat if you arent registering its fraud & its the customs boys that come calling.& they play by a serious set of rules Your competitor should be very very careful if he is doing what you suspect. I have heard of people selling vehicles & stickin the vat on the bill by making up a seven digit number, they get spotted eventually, but by then they've moved the caravan.

  5. a person capable of an aerial rescue should be present , certificated ? I'd be more concerned if they didnt have a rescue kit rather than a piece of plastic saying cs38
  6. no chance I cant see stihl or husky allowing all the money that they have poured into R&D on these products to be swept aside how will they phase it in Or they will have to compensate all owners totasl outcry from the business community tophandles are as safe as ground saws its down to the operator using them, saws dont cause accidents people do

  10. as i see it, it depends on how you want to develop the business if you want to stay as a self employed man then using your name tells folks 'just that' the business is a smaller end business & that will appeal to those who want a face to face personalized job those gimicy names 3fellas toptrees cutabove etc also have a place they get a smile, but to my mind I dont want someone working for me who doesnt take their business perseption seriously, & I'm sure they struggle to get taken seriously by organisations who are serious about the contractors they employ as they say if business was easy everyone would be doing it ............. at which ever market you punt yourself my advice .... remain professional
  11. Hi Kev buy a smaller bar for the 441 & get a 026 then m8y if you really need it I used to get 023's for small occasional ground work, cheaper than the 026 light power to weight ratio is okay too ,though they arent as durable, what r u wanting it for? forgot about that ! we met up at the gts show der !! hows tricks have you left work yet ? missus & kidy okay ? I thought you were coming up for a beer session iain
  12. All chippers are better than ' brash bashing & mashin ' I started with a small 6" gravely with a rotating bed single feed roller too blades it was light, portable & did its job reasonably well , within the industry now You simply cant compete on the same level as any competitor who is using a chipper so look at you ur need then your storage & then your budget if you a chipping clippings, then you dont need a 10-12ten inch machine equally if your looking to put it in your garage a home then dimensions will apply then comes the budget starting for a half decent one 5k+ vat , note of warning though try to see where your going if you want to expand or go full time with large volumes of material in the short to mid term then it is worth the extra outlay to acheive a more productive through put, bigger chipper = job done faster & on to the next one so if you have the work that will allow you to fit in a small £50 + job each day then 250 pw = 1k per month 6 mth = etc etc as for rates. well thats the thing you must sort yourself, be aware of your local demand the ratio of firms to jobs, how hard do you need to fight to get work & ultimately the costs of operation in relation to the net income from each day spent doing it . indicative rates can be dependant on the men per crew the equipment etc break it down what it costs then build in machinery upkeep ,replacements & remember what ever you earn doing this job it is seasonal you'll be chasing your arse around may - sept dead dec jan & most of feb so ensure you build in your price on the full year costs & required income as you wont be likely to earn the whole year round , hope this helps rgds Iain
  13. kev at 26 wants no bigger than 16" bar dont run your saws at the top of where they can operate or you will lessen the life get some of that money spent my boy get a 441 you can run on bigger 25" as well cuts like a bitch on 18"
  14. thnks Richard had some good interest, not sure quite what this year holds for business, let me know if you need a starter machiine part ex's are sometimes made available.
  15. You just never think it, do you every time you pick up a saw it could happen 1 moments in attention & .. I am truely gutted for all those concerned , I cant imagine the anquish kids would go through, but 'if' I have to go doing something I love......... It maybe a nice gesture to raise a fund from arbtalk, I dont want that to sound off, its just a suggestion thoughts.......
  16. Lee in defence of the training provider please bear in mind that not all candidates are the same as the guy you intend to send the course work its alot for candidates to take in 4 days, legislation, practical maintenance & then the tree felling itself & the provider must aim the course at all skill, knowledge & ability levels. as the person footing the bill = you , is it better to cram it into one course & have your guy fail & then pay for a re assessment ?
  17. Also Wheres the amenity value ?

  19. try pete mctree huddersfield or STS (Kev) holmfirth
  20. Ask the council what they want. It may include your recent TPO work applications and inspections of your work. Round here you need AA approved status sorry they simply cant stipulate that as AA or isa or any other body as they are not a mandatory industry accreditation & complianice with guidance is purely voluntary best value regs - etc so long as all works are carried out within legislated parameters, they cannot exclude you !!
  21. theres all sorts of tips & handy advice first ensure that your saw is level in both planes ie nose to saw & bottom to top when in the side elevation hold your saw on the front handle side plate down ! then adjust the tip using your right hand (this will only take a finger strength) then align the engine case (as that is set at 90' to the bar) dig your bottom dog into the stem then apply power at the same time allow the bar to sweep in toward your base cut this should mantain a parralell back cut make sure that you make allowance for the tapograhy of the ground , it is all to common to set yourself up from one side holding the saw in a rigded position to make your directional cut then to transpose the back cut from the other side of the tree with the same stance (not making allowance for the change in ground slope) rgds Iain
