For a price, lorries aren't cheap to run you know.
  2. That's the one, horrible shrub grafted onto a tall rootstock to make a standard.

Dunno Bob, I've been running an 18 tonner as my main truck for nearly ten years now, I'm not sure it's worthwhile really. My suggestion is that all the 3.5 tonner brigade carry on as they are, at least until I've retired.

Of course there are exceptions, they prove the rule. A standard tipper for tree surgery work will not be exempt from operators licence regulations.
  5. That's a great project, and it looks amazing too.

Anything over 3.5 tonnes needs an o licence.

    Tree id

    I'd agree, Corylus colurna
  8. It's not a legal requirement, I just bin them. Same with the completion certificates the same LA send out......
  9. Or you can buy an Albee cylinder, you pay £250 ish up front, but there are no rental fees. When you need a refill you trade the bottle for a new one and just pay for the gas. I have co2 mix and pure argon.
  10. What are you referring to as gmaw Alec? I thought that was the umbrella term for mig/mag processes? I did some C&G L1 and L2 evening courses in mig, mma, and tig aluminium. The mig is fairly easy if you have good manual dexterity and motor skills. Tig is a little more involved.
  11. Air bags are the way to go if you want a proper job.
  12. Or buy a little grapple and just hire any old digger. If you're going to be doing it reasonably regularly it might work out cheaper.
  13. Because most 7.5 tonners are downrated 10 tonners for the UK market, they work well at 10 tonnes but at 7.5 tonnes the payload is pretty pathetic. The exception to that is the Merc 814 with a bonnet. The newer 7.2 tonne Iveco looks good too.
  14. 6.5 tonne iveco would be my choice, 3.5 tonne payload at a guess My friends crewcab has 3 tonne payload, the single cab with an ally body is nearly 4 tonne payload

    STIHL battery saw

If you want a long reach it's got to be stihl, husky one isn't out yet.
  16. I would look at this pragmatically, the contract isn't worth the paper it's written on, so sign it, take your money and move on. Is the moral victory worth more than getting paid?
  17. The oak would be good for food smoking, if you can separate the dust and keep it clean it's worth good money.
  18. Yes, perhaps if he hadn't been lugging a bloody great stove they might have beaten Amundsen to the pole? Typical Brit, can't go anywhere without a hot cup of tea. Meanwhile the Norwegians have jogged there while necking tins of fermented herring, taken selfies at the pole, left a rude note and strolled home.
  19. The problems with lorry driving is long hours, low pay, increasing regulation, increasing risk of personal liability (fines and points), and most of all it's really boring. No offence to any professional drivers. I wouldn't trade tree work for it unless I really had to.
  20. Or get the employee to chip in for the extra costs of C over C1. Have you looked at running 12 or 15 tonners instead of 7.5 tonners?
  21. It would make sense to skip the B+E, but they will need to do the C1 first then the C1+E
  22. C is technically unlimited weight, but the largest rigid under current UK regs is 32 tonnes.
  23. No, she's coming! Bellas in school though.
