  1. Got my mother-in-law a new toaster so she could warm her bathwater.
  2. Grudgingly () I have to agree with Penfold on this. I've always found a billhook far better than a hand-axe for splitting down kindling, plus if you find a good old fashioned English-made one at a carboot or junk shop it will hold a far better edge than these crappy new ones.
  3. Had a variety of jobs in my time, from roofing, to plastering, to being a chef. had a short spell in a dog food factory too between jobs (back in the 80's when there were "no jobs") 9 years warehousing, and now about 15yrs in the tree game. Guess which I prefer?
  4. Try the Hilliers Manual of Trees and shrubs, there's a section dedicated to this, though I cant recall whether it lists individual Oak species. If i get time I'll take look. Ok, taken a look, various Q are listed with different soil types, and different site conditions, so worth picking up a copy at a library or shop
  5. Had a good year 2010, new avenues opened up. Lost a couple of clients (small ones) but in general things were good. 2011 is going to be interesting and hard work to keep up the momentum but not unduly worried.....yet!
  6. Bought myself a wee r/c helicopter gunship for Xmas, just done an attack run on the dog and a rapid retreat, 6mins of flying time woo-hoo. Xmas tree is next target, knock out the baubles and decorations. Great fun:thumbup:Got some sloe gin, good drop of stuff, and choccies and other sweet stuff.
  7. A bin? Nice, practical present that:thumbup1:
  8. Why are you going to Turkey for Christmas?
  9. DEepest sympathies Lyn Ed. If there is a positive, he wouldnt have known anything about it. My thoughts are with you.
  10. I preferred last weeks -8 or so to yesterdays +2C with that wind. Merry Christmas Tobias:thumbup1:
  11. How about modding something like this? There are loads of variations of hand-drawn arches about, and I'm sure they'd adapt to go behind a 2-wheeler. http://www.cornishwoodland.co.uk/products/logging-arch.htm
  12. Quite a few years ago I had a blackthorn ram itself into the hip joint. It was so painfull for quite some time. I went to the docs after a little while as i could barely bear to walk, and they were reluctant to dig it out in case they damaged the muscles and tendons in that area. Its still there now, but apparently the body calcifies the thorn which isolates it from the system and prevents it causing harm. It still causes discomfort if I bang the hip, but otherwise its not a problem.
  13. Nice John, though I was expecting a special guest appearance from a certain Robin:laugh1:
  14. We were talking about the OP's theft today on the way to site to remove approx 5tons of 3mtr timber. Guess what, half of it wandered off overnight:thumbdown:
  15. Our old dumper/loader turns over and starts instantly, even in the real cold. Yet the Ford 7710 needed a fire to warm her enough to cough and splutter into a wheezing life.
  16. Get that green beech split asap, while its green, once its seasoned it'll be twice as hard to work. Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy it:thumbup1:
  17. No, I was wrkig with my mate, so I got us one each. They are (were) the best part of an inch thick. The twigs are there for authenticity
  18. Due to the lack of caffs in the rural environment, it is always necessary to plan ahead a little. Todays brekkie, smoked bacon chops, a true delicacy, no fuss, no frills, a veggies nightmare. Proper food
  19. NB Pigs in blankets do NOT cook well in a tin Roses tin on a brazier:001_rolleyes:
  20. They have a choice, and made the wrong one. Get over it:biggrin:
  21. It'll do no harm mate, carry on:thumbup1:
  22. Just another day here, at least now the mud is frozen solid it doesnt traipse everywhere. Though the air temp is cold, its crisp and dry, wear the proper clothing, take layers off when working and put em on again after. As for all the selfish people whinging about being stuck at the airports, get a life.
  23. Woudnt catch me eating all those calories for brekkie
  24. I recently did a job for a construction company (well a small one) removing 3 oaks prior to under-pinning work. The Bigger Company that had passed the job down to him, went under owing him a small fortune. He rang me apologetically explaining the situation. I just explained that my contract was with him and that as such his debt was to me, and that whatever was going on between him and the other company was of no interest to me. He sent a cheque the next day for the full amount, and yes it did clear. Take no bull from anyone Dilz. If he is right and you owe him for diesel, deduct that from the total, and bill the remainder, better to get 2900 than nothing.
  25. Another thing to keep an eye on is medications. They will forget they've taken it and take more, or will neglect to take it at all. I know of one person who over-dosed on laxatives, as they couldnt see very well and thought they were taking paracetamol for a headache! Another simply forgot to take their Warfarin, which led to other issues. Things that seem obvious to us become confusing for them, so regular daily checks, perhaps only placing out a daily dose of medications at a time, make things simpler.
