The only time I've seen a bars badly bent, is with inexperienced climbers doing outboard step cuts on the 2nd cut freefalling limbs.

 

Very likely to be left hand cutters sharpened shorter or longer than the r/h ones, or possibly the top right angle corners damaged on the cutters one side if a full chisel chain.

 

You mentioned sharpening issues already - either way buy him a new chain and learn from your mistake. We've all been there mate, these things happen!

It can happen if you a felling a tree and you've got the weighting/lean wrong (goes 3 o clock instead of the 12 you wanted) and catch the tip on the way down. Seen it happen a few times when working in really tangle overgrown areas.

thats a real s**t situation bud, it's too late to say don't borrow kit etc, I'd nip round there say sorry look at the bar to see if it is the bar "witch I doubt" long bars have got flex and if the bars fine tell him you'll get him a new chain and hopefully all will cool,

Everyone saying don't lend or borrow are right. But its not always possible, specially when just starting out.

 

A good compromise I would suggest if this situation arises again is to buy yourself a bar and chain and just borrow a powerhead

I would only use someone else s kit if they were right there watching .
