Monkey puzzle tree .

I have a monkey puzzle tree in the front garden, we have Been in the property for two years and understand the tree has been here for over twenty five years. Some of the branches have gone brown also there appears to be some mould on some of the branches. This week two seed pods have dropped with loads of seeds falling to the lawn. Any advice on how to treat this wonderful tree. See photographs. I have I have managed to attach. Ian

As others have already said. Your tree is a very nice example of a semi mature Monkey Puzzle.

 

No work really necessary. As others have mentioned this species naturally causes itself to shed its lower limbs as it gradually grows taller. In the natural cycle, the limbs gradually brown off from the tips backwards towards the stem. If it looks too unsightly for you, you can cut them off at the stem, without causing any harm.

 

And ditto, your mould is in fact a Lichen. Not a problem for the tree.

 

Have you collected any of the seeds and considered propagating them?

I also agree perfect specimen, you may find the lichen growing on one side more than the others, not getting as much sun

Think you can eat the seeds. Saw Hugh fearnly watisname on the telly go to bicton college in Devon and collect them from a mewp.

The nuts are supposed to make for really good eating, better than pine nuts apparently!

the lichen growing on your tree is a sign that your air is of a high quality, very little pollution in it

Seen it done in leeds! It has actually responded well but I wouldn't do it there again I usually price myself out of monkey puzzle and hawthorn jobs
