Climbing rope - 11 or 13 mm or is it just a matter of personal preference?

 

What size friction cord for prusik? 8mm prusik for 11mm climbing and 10mm prusik for 13mm climbing? Or will one size do both?

 

I need to order a few bits.

 

What's the absolute must haves?

Your on the right track with prussik sizes and personal preference with the rope really. 11mm can take most mechanical devices better than the 13mm and generally has better modern performance (more static) for modern climbing techniques.

climbing rope I've got some 13mm and old 11 climbing wall rope

Prusik loops - wil order a couple of meters of 8 and 10mm

Harness - on its way

Carabiners - I have some screw gate for now

That should get me up and down?

 

Need a helmet?

Can I then rock off to the local playing field and climb trees?

Then what?

If you're using a hitch climber with an advanced friction hitch you will notice the benefit of a smaller diameter rope for sure. If you're just starting out then a 13mm with a prussik will probably be a good choice for developing grip strength.

So I loved multiplat? Is that such a crime? Better than these itty bitty tangly spangly ropes with names like Autistic Tiger or Insane Gibbon Cum, that simply HAVE to be matched with the right boots called Bratwurst Brown Floaters or the like.

Great post Mick , I had many happy years on multiplat, and used to splice it myself , an eye in each end , it is still available from yacht chandlers , ( approx £3-£4 per metre ) it is, and never was a specific climbing rope it just suited us at the time and was far nicer than 3 strand . I can just imagine the debate about multiplat Vs 3 strand if there was a forum like this 20 years ago !!!!!!

Multiplat, ahhh I've gon all nostalgic, still got a hank of it hung up with a big Swedish strop and a willens t22 all blue full body harness from when I started, I keep it to show the lads how it was not that long ago when they mone about gear.
